Would you take DP or expect DP to take you for a tooth extraction?

I've never had it done, so don't know what's involved.

DP obviously isn't looking forward to it, but doesn't seem overly nervous.

I'm working, but could organise my day to take him. Would you if you could or is it perfectly normal to go alone? He's assuming he'll go alone.

My DH expected to come with me when I had my wisdom teeth out and while I didn't ask him to, I was glad he was there. I felt a bit wobbly after & was glad I could just be a passenger on the way home, not contend with traffic.

I'm very stoic and practical but if it's no big logistical exercise or drama to be there, it's nice to offer to be around for the people you love when a not very pleasant thing is going to happen.

I drove home after both of mine, absolutely fine it was all still numb so no issues

YooBlue · 14/05/2026 20:25

I’ve usually got the tube and gone back to work

youandyourelk · 14/05/2026 20:29

Absolutely expect DP to be with, but I am dental phobic and have rubbish teeth. DH was with me when I had 3 impacted wisdom teeth removed under general, and when I had a root canal. He's a keeper.

TokenGinger · 14/05/2026 20:30

No, I wouldn’t expect to be accompanied.

somanychristmaslights · 14/05/2026 21:04

My DH took me for my 2 wisdom teeth out. It was horrendous as the teeth were so hard to get out. I was dribbling and bleeding, no way could I have driven.

singthing · 14/05/2026 21:33

I'd never think of asking someone to come to the dentist* with me.

First of all, I'm a grown woman.

Second of all, after I've had medical procedures I just want to get home/get on/get myself to bed as required so the idea of someone mithering round me sounds intensely annoying.

(*upper wisdom: popped out in seconds; bottom wisdom: very gnarly and twisted)

My DH doesn’t drive so I’ve taken myself to all my dentist and hospital appts. I’ve had 2 operations and caught the bus to hospital and arranged for friends to collect me afterwards as it was a GA so I wasn’t allowed to drive afterwards and the hospital is about a 90 minute drive away. It’s a bit sad staying in hospital with no visitors at visiting times but I knew I was ok and would be home again soon.

drspouse · 15/05/2026 07:26

I've had wisdom teeth out, another tooth extracted and root canal. Just walked home or got the bus each time.

SnobblyBobbly · 15/05/2026 07:29

He’d be my first port of call, but if a work thing prevented him from doing it - sometimes he can’t miss things, then I’d ask my sister or a friend. I can’t drive, so unfortunately it can’t fully work in the reverse, but I’d help him arrange a lift if he needed me to and would be home when he got back to make sure he’s ok. I’m not heartless but nor am I famed for endless sympathy 😄 I’d do what I can.

SnobblyBobbly · 15/05/2026 07:33

Oh I’m assuming this is for someone who is being put out and can’t drive home - otherwise I’d walk and go on my own.

I have no problems with the dentist but DH has a major phobia and has to go somewhere really far away to have a general anaesthetic - for everything. It really bugs me tbh, but a phobia is a phobia I guess.

Bunnycat101 · 15/05/2026 08:06

Depends on the extraction:

Ive had two top wisdom teeth out. Was over quickly and then was able to crack on immediately. I then had an impacted wisdom tooth out at the bottom and was ok to drive. I assumed I’d be fine for my 4th and final wisdom tooth but it was the most complicated one, took a lot longer to extract. I had to wait a good hour in the waiting room until my shakiness had stopped as I wasn’t safe to drive immediately unlike the other 3.

PancakeCloud · 15/05/2026 08:08

No, unless contraindicated to drive

SooPee · 15/05/2026 08:18

No, I take the bus there and back alone and have gone back to work afterwards for one of them!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 15/05/2026 08:21

I went alone for a wisdom tooth extraction. I walk to my dentist, it's about a mile away, so I walked there and back. I was fine (but live alone so wasn't really over run with options).

sueelleker · 15/05/2026 08:22

My recent extraction was done with local anaesthetic, so I was fine solo.

Pricelessadvice · 15/05/2026 08:25

I have had 2 out and have to have them cut out and stitched because my roots are hooked. I just drove myself.

InterestingDuck · 15/05/2026 08:31

DH had to have 5 teeth out last year and he went by himself, he was fine. It's not worth taking time off work to accompany an adult unless you've reason to believe it will be complicated, e.g. dentist phobia, history of fainting etc.

TheCurious0range · 15/05/2026 14:58

If I could and I didn't need to take time off I would, but my work can be flexible. I've never had a tooth out nor has DH but I did take him to his vasectomy
