Would you take DP or expect DP to take you for a tooth extraction?

Pinribbons · 14/05/2026 14:16

I've never had it done, so don't know what's involved.

DP obviously isn't looking forward to it, but doesn't seem overly nervous.

I'm working, but could organise my day to take him. Would you if you could or is it perfectly normal to go alone? He's assuming he'll go alone.

Yes of course

DeltaVariant · 14/05/2026 16:27

Under a general Mike’s away from home yeah I’d want a lift or arrange to collect around work.

Under local near home? Nah. Get a taxi “cheaper” than the cost of a days leave to us.

Yes of course

Is he nervous then?

BringBackCatsEyes · 14/05/2026 16:29

Depends why it’s being extracted.

General is different i think

SweetBaklava · 14/05/2026 16:31

No - I was fine after all three (wisdoms teeth extractions as needed), local anaesthetic with no complications.

theonlygirl · 14/05/2026 16:55

Depends on what kind of extraction. Regular tooth, unpleasant, but I was OK by myself to drive home. Wisdom teeth, was told I couldn't drive myself home and was in a bit of a mess spitting up blood, despite the fact my mouth was packed with tampon like things, so I'd definitely accompany someone if they are having that level of procedure.

FlatErica · 14/05/2026 16:56

Not for an extraction under local anaesthetic.

Squirrelblanket · 14/05/2026 16:59

A 'normal' one, no. My husband will be collecting me after I have a wisdom tooth removed later this year but that's because it's under general anaesthetic. He won't be coming with me though.

Twokittenchaos · 14/05/2026 17:25

I had mine extracted during my lunch break at work. Standard yank with some pliers, no GA, it didn’t cross my mind to bring someone else along.

Katherineryan1986 · 14/05/2026 15:16

how does 3 babies link to root canal? Sorry, genuine question @JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff

@Katherineryan1986I’m not the person you asked but basically pregnancy can cause all sorts of dental problems - that’s why pregnant women get free dental care under the NHS.

TheChosenTwo · 14/05/2026 18:25

I didn’t even think about accompanying dh when he had to get one taken out - he went and came back within an hour then went back to work!
Ive got to have all my wisdom teeth taken out under a general anaesthetic at the hospital so he’ll have to come and get me I think as I’m sure you’re not to drive soon after one.
Otherwise though, if it’s being done with a local at the dentist then I wouldn’t think I’d need taking and picking up. I’m scared of the dentist but do manage. I went to and from my root canal by myself.

I had 4 teeth removed and thought I would be fine to ride my motorbike home. My father disagreed and it’s just as well
as I fainted when I got to his car in the car park!

TheEasterBunny3 · 14/05/2026 18:39

I react badly to the local anesthetic so I never drive myself, even for a filling, as I wouldn't feel safe. Not everyone reacts badly though so it depends on how he has been with previous dental work.

PinkTonic · 14/05/2026 18:45

No it wouldn’t occur to me.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 14/05/2026 18:47

No, neither of us would want or need the other (unless it was under general then clearly we’d need support after). We live walking distance from the dentist and neither of us really mind dental work.

Lillens · 14/05/2026 18:48

I had sedation for wisdom teeth extractions and I was told I needed an adult to accompany me home. My adult DS came with me so DH wouldn't have to take time off work. I would probably have been fine on my own, I felt fine and not in pain or drowsy. But I think they wouldn't have let me leave without a chaperone.

I have local anesthetic quite frequently at the dentist due to gum issues and I am fine just going on my own, it has never occurred to me to have anyone with me.

MirandaWest · 14/05/2026 18:57

I have had several teeth out including some lower ones and then had a denture. That time DH was in America and was trying to organise a friend to take me and pick me up but I really didn’t want that! Once I felt a bit odd beforehand and he did take me and bring me back home but I think I was maybe a bit ill. Every other time I’ve gone myself.

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/05/2026 19:00

My husband had to come when I had my wisdom tooth out, I wasn't sedated but they said it can leave you feeling a bit bruised and shaky.

Normal tooth extraction, not at all.

MyNameIsTina · 14/05/2026 19:09

Under sedation yes, normal extraction under local, no.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 14/05/2026 19:19

I've had quite a few extractions and no, I wouldn't expect anyone to accompany me, it's really not a big deal.

Shufflebumnessie · 14/05/2026 19:20

I had 4 teeth removed over 2 appointments due to overcrowding. The first appointment was absolutely fine, no problems. 2 teeth extracted, right top & bottom.
The second appointment, the extraction (left top & bottom) itself was fine but for some reason the anaesthetic affected the nerves in my left eye and it involuntary shut. I couldn't open it until the anaesthetic wore off. Thankfully I'd walked to the dental surgery as there's no way I could have driven home with my eye as it was.
From my experience of the 2nd appointment if I have any future dental work that requires anaesthetic and driving, I'd probably ask DH to be my chauffeur!

Safarisagoody · 14/05/2026 19:22

No absolutely not, they numb you up, no biggie/

D20 · 14/05/2026 19:31

Yes to both if sedation is involved. My dentist wouldn’t allow anyone to go by themselves after even conscious sedation. I couldn’t even walk in a straight line but DH would have managed fine by himself.
