What age were your dc when they first went to the dentist? How often do they go?

just looking for other stats. A chat with a friend has made me think 🤔

Every six months, from about eighteen months onwards. After the first child, probably earlier than that as she saw them when they came in with the older ones. But we are lucky to have be able to pay for private care for them.

My son went for the first time at 10 months old and he goes once a year for a check up.

PepsiBook · 13/05/2026 20:07

Since they got their first teeth

As soon as a tooth appeared and every 6 months since.

Roads · 13/05/2026 20:08

About age 2 due to COVID lockdown restrictions and prolonged wait times but then every 6-8 months after that.

FutureMandosWife · 13/05/2026 20:08

My son went with me from baby before teeth, hv said that would help prevent fear of dentist when he actually had to go

Myheadisgoingtoexplodeagain · 13/05/2026 20:10

First child was before a year old as I go every 6 months and we always just have a check up at the same time. Second child was a lockdown baby and I can’t remember when she eventually got to see a dentist.

Dontbeatwat · 13/05/2026 20:10

About 2 ish think? Can't really remember and also lockdowns happened which restricted everything. They certainly weren't as young as 12-18 months. Although dc3 who is now age 2 has been twice as he's on our 6 monthly family visit.

Quokkafeet · 13/05/2026 20:11

First child went at about 18months. Due to lockdown second didn't go until probably 3ish.

Edictfromno10 · 13/05/2026 20:12

Since they have teeth to check! Then every 6 months!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/05/2026 20:13

6 months… the dentist had a look at his gums when I brought him to an appt. 17 years later we still go together, also with DD.

Twasasurprise · 13/05/2026 20:14

About 2yrs.

Yung93 · 13/05/2026 20:15

As soon as they get a tooth, then every six months. Also brushed her tooth/teeth. That’s what I did with my child who is now 16, she’s never had to have a filling or experienced toothache and as always brushed her teeth.

wishfulthinking25 · 13/05/2026 20:15

First time 18m and every 6m since. Plan to do the same with DC2 aswell.

chickensatire · 13/05/2026 20:16

My children aged about 18 months because NHS dentists were available….still didn’t avoid one child from dental problems.
Grandchildren are having to see private dentist ( which I am paying for) because NHS dentists are impossible to find . The dental care in our part of the UK is awful.
Hate to think how many children will grow up with rotting teeth!

BelleEpoque27 · 13/05/2026 20:17

About 1, he came with me to an appointment and the dentist had a look at his teeth. Then Covid happened and I can't remember when we next went back, but since then we go every six months for a check up.

Around 18 months with first and then every approx 6 months (alrho they are awful for cancelling and ends up being a bit over 6 months!), from 3 with second as they said they didnt see them.before that age! This is an NHS dentist and its hard to get one round here (even for kids!)

Statsquestion1 · 13/05/2026 20:17

Yea so I took my dd when she was 2 (her teeth took AGES to come through) and I take her once a year since, same with ds! My friend thought it was crazy and didn’t bring them until they were called by the dentist at school age for their dealings! I had it done by that stage already.

Since they were 2 and every 6 months.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 13/05/2026 20:18

About 18 months. Every 6 months since, other than during COVID.

Do dentists get in touch when they start school? I can't imagine that happening with the squeeze on patient lists now. Plus many parents wouldn't be registered to a local nhs dentist so I doubt they would accept the children onto the books.

Sorry we are in Ireland. They do that here, they should be called at age 8 for their sealings but there is a backlog so it’s usually at age 9-10

I can’t remember. They came with me and probably before teeth the dentist would just have a look to get them used to it.
I suppose from the first tooth properly.

avocadotofu · 13/05/2026 20:39

Around a year old I think.

spicysalad · 13/05/2026 20:41

From being a baby, with me, so they could learn about it. Proper checkups from 2.
