What age were your dc when they first went to the dentist? How often do they go?

just looking for other stats. A chat with a friend has made me think 🤔

About a year. Only one child had any teeth at this point, but it was good to get the bigger two used to it! 😂 I booked well in advance and didn’t realise I’d have such toothless kids.

We go every 6m.

Snorerephron · 13/05/2026 20:43

From age 2 I think (their teeth came in v late)

Sorry we are in Ireland. They do that here, they should be called at age 8 for their sealings but there is a backlog so it’s usually at age 9-10

Wow I can't imagine wait until your child is 10 for their first check up. By that point there could already be irreversible decay and damage.

I was a dental nurse in a past life so I took mine every 6 months from when they got their first teeth. DGS is 2 and he’s been going since he was 1 because his teeth didn’t start coming through until he was 9mths old. He sits lovely for the dentist and cooperates well.

SecretSweetStash · 13/05/2026 20:44

They had all of us in the room with the dentist at the same time so the children saw both myself and Dh in the dentist chair. The children went from being babies so it is normal to be in the room and then when they get their first teeth they sit on a parent's knee to have their teeth checked.

It is a very family friendly dentist and they do this with all the families.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 13/05/2026 20:48

I registered mine when we moved here. Took a long time of phoning around to find one taking NHS patients.

cmonspring · 13/05/2026 20:49

2 years I think and then every 6 months since

ChickenBananaBanana · 13/05/2026 20:52

6 months. Joined the village waiting list when he was born and they said he can come from 6 months. Dentist felt his gums and that was it but I presumed they knew what they were doing.

Zov · 13/05/2026 20:53

Every 6 months.

Bloodycrossstitch · 13/05/2026 20:57

Iirc the first two went at one because that’s what the dentist we were with at the time recommended and the rest went as soon as they got their first tooth and they’ve all had check ups every 6 months.
I couldn’t imagine waiting til they’re 9. They’ll have adult teeth by then.

Justploddingonandon · 13/05/2026 21:08

First around 18 months, second less than 6 months as I brought her to DS’s appointment and the dentist offered to check her too. When I said she didn’t have anything to check yet, he said he can check their gums and it gets them used to it.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 13/05/2026 21:35

One, after his first tooth. Shocked his friends at nursery age 3 haven’t been

Sprogonthetyne · 13/05/2026 22:32

My first just came along with me and they sat him in the chair for a quick look to get him use to it from as soon as he could sit. I think he started having his own proper appointments from around 1. My youngest was a baby during covid, so she was actually about 2 by the time we could get into the dentist.

They both go every 6 months now

SquigglePigs · 13/05/2026 22:36

About 1. Then she didnt see her again for about 15 months due to covid. Been every 6-7 months since.

sesquipedalian · 13/05/2026 22:40

As soon as they had teeth - but they just came with me anyway. I have rubbish teeth, so it was important to me that they got seen.

SeriousFaffing · 13/05/2026 22:56

Not long after getting their first teeth - so less than a year old.

We wanted going to the dentist for check ups to be a normal experience that they are very used to. They have their routine checkups every 6 months.

Quokkafeet · 13/05/2026 22:59

What's 'sealings' OP? I haven't heard of that before!

LuckyCharmz · 13/05/2026 23:02

My dentist told me to bring them with me to all my usual 6 month check ups so they would never be scared, so they’ve been going since birth. As they got bigger the dentist let them sit in the chair etc, not sure what age he gave them a formal appointment.

TheChosenTwo · 13/05/2026 23:02

About a year or whatever appointment fell nearest to when dh and I had ours and they had teeth to check, and every 6 months after. Apart from covid of course.

onmylastnerveseriously · 13/05/2026 23:11

DD1 didn’t go until age 7. DH was meant to take her when she was three (no bottles or squash so not necessary to go when very little) but then he died and I just blocked it for years. Anyway her teeth were fine as we have good habits and hygiene, which is the most important thing. I go about once every 10 years, never had a single issue and niether has either child (now older teens, they go every 6 months).

We’re lucky as a family but obviously not taking her until age 7 was wrong. Trauma is weird.

What's 'sealings' OP? I haven't heard of that before!

Sealings are like a seal or a coating that they put on the back molars and premolars to prevent decay. They act as a barrier against bacteria and food, filling deep grooves that toothbrushes cannot easily clean. They last about 5-10 years apparently. Do they do these in England?

They've definitely did for my daughter. She had enamel hypoplasia. I can't remember whether or not they did with my son, I don't think so

TappyGilmore · 14/05/2026 07:34

First visit somewhere between 18 months and 2, I don’t remember exactly. They have mostly gone annually except during Covid.
