Sealings are like a seal or a coating that they put on the back molars and premolars to prevent decay. They act as a barrier against bacteria and food, filling deep grooves that toothbrushes cannot easily clean. They last about 5-10 years apparently. Do they do these in England?

Ah ok. I've just looked it up and apparently not as the NHS funding doesn't cover it adequately but this is set to change. We see a private dentist (no NHS option here) who suggested some sort of coating for my son but not my daughter, something to do with his enamel not being so good so more at risk of cavities. Maybe it's just done as needed in England. Interesting!

I’m now realising my dentist probably thinks I’m absolutely mental for registering my daughter when she was 9 weeks old 🙈 took me 4 years to get my NHS dentist and when I saw that they were accepting children’s places I thought well why not. Didn’t want to risk her not having a place or having to take her even further to a different dentist. The dentist did warn me against too much chocolate so she obviously didn’t see many 2 month olds 😅

Mine came with me and DH (double appointment) so saw what happened as a little baby. Think the dentist encouraged chair, open mouth and mirror from one year and by two was doing a proper check up. Back then it was every six months. Both DC are in their 30s and only one has had a filling but that was in a baby tooth that fell out a year later.

Took them in with me from their first teeth, they’ve go every 6 months from then and they got their own appointments from 3 I think. We’re very lucky to have an NHS dentist who’s amazing with children.

LIZS · 14/05/2026 09:12

Took them as babies and dentist had a quick look around until old enough to sit in chair.

As soon as a tooth appeared and every 6 months since.

Same here.

WonderingAndOverthinking · 14/05/2026 09:14

Since the first tooth appeared and every 6 months since.

exhaustedandoverit · 14/05/2026 10:18

6 months for both. I took them in to my appointment and my dentist had a quick look at them. There wasn’t much to see but he counted their teeth at all my appointments before their own started.
They both have different issues now at 6 & 8 and will likely need braces at some point but at least they aren’t scared of going I suppose. They now go every 6 months.

BrightBrightSunshineyDay · 14/05/2026 10:25

As soon as they had teeth. They all mostly have good teeth now. Except ds. He seems to be resistant to looking after hi teeth.
No idea why. He's an adult now, so that's up to him.

mindutopia · 14/05/2026 10:32

2-3 years. Eldest would have been 2, youngest probably would have been 3 as it was COVID so none of us could bloody get a dental appointment. They are generally seen every 6 months, though eldest now moved to annually. I didn’t see the point of taking them earlier as dentist didn’t do much initially other than look in their mouths and see which teeth had erupted.

rightoguvnor · 14/05/2026 10:40

We took the children with us from the time they were born. They’ve never known otherwise than to go and sit in a special chair and be prodded by someone in a mask. From the time they were old enough to have their own examination we always booked the four of us in as a block.
And nowadays, 30 odd years on, DH meets DD for a coffee and they go together very early in the morning. And DS and I, who work different shifts, meet up and go together (with cake afterwards).
We darent miss an appointment and lose our NHS check up status.

Not long after each ones teeth started popping thru. I think our 2 yr old twins have just had there 3rd visit now and all the older ones are fine since they were used to it from so young

Didimum · 14/05/2026 11:52

Probably 3?

luckylavender · 14/05/2026 11:56

Less than a year then regularly

Chamallo · 14/05/2026 12:49

Tried at 18m but she clamped her mouth shut and totally refused to open it. Dentist said not to bother trying again for another couple of years, just make sure she has good hygiene etc. I’ll try again soon as she’s 3 now and slightly more cooperative.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 14/05/2026 12:52

I wasn't able to get one until she was 4. No issues with her teeth though.

Kitt1 · 14/05/2026 12:54

When he was about 10yrs old as I realised he hadn’t seen one via school, as I’d assumed it was part of basic health care like vaccinations, for primary aged children.

He now goes to my dentist once a year. Dentist says he doesn’t need to go more often.
