Three women's bodies found in the sea at Brighton

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

Why didn't anyone report three women were missing?

If it's a Channel crossing, from what I understand, it's rare that women go on the boats from France, and when they do they are pushed to the back / bottom, where the risk of being crushed is high.

If it's not a crossing, what on earth has happened?

Words can't express how evil this is.

It sounds like a tragic accident to me as well. Currents can be so treacherous. 😢

Why does everything suddenly have to be connected to boats and migrants, or Starmer?

PortSalutPlease · 13/05/2026 15:46

TenTenTenAgain · 13/05/2026 15:45

@PortSalutPlease it could've been students out clubbing. As I posted earlier my daughter was out with her flatmates at a seaside club there last night
My mind immediately went to it being young people after a night out being drunk and careless.

What an awful situation for the three women ether way.

It happens here fairly often but usually they are intercepted by the beach patrol. I don’t think it runs on Tuesday night/Weds am unfortunately:(

Because if you listen to the press conference from the police, they are asking for help in identifying them because they don’t know.

They have said "Fast-moving inquiries are ongoing to confirm the identities of these three women". Which suggests to me they know who they are but they haven't been formally identified.

It is indeed very old. All the year round!

I don’t wear a wetsuit. Swim all year round - weather/tide permitting. Swam /dipped twice last week in a swimsuit with a dozen others.

wetsuits are the exception, swimsuits or trunks the norm - particularly from Spring through to autumn. Though some swimmers do wear booties and/or gloves or neoprene swimsuits.

MyArtfulGreySloth · 13/05/2026 15:51

News says they had been at a student night.

Newmeagain · 13/05/2026 15:52

They were students who had been on a night out.

TenTenTenAgain · 13/05/2026 15:56

@Newmeagain What's your news source please?

Latest statement: “we are at the very early stages of our enquiries and our priority is to identify all three women and contact their next of kin.” This was posted by Sussex Police less than an hour ago.

Idk if these are migrants or swimmers. But how horrific that women get pushed to the back to be crushed. Omg!

I think they also endure a host of other horrific things before they arrive at the point where they are prepared to cross the channel in a small boat.

Sexual violence in the people smuggling trade is absolutely rife.

There is an excellent podcast series called ‘to catch a scorpion’ by BBC R4 on this and there is another new podcast series on the human trafficking network being released today also BBC R4.

Being reported by Daily Mail.

@Newmeagain What's your news source please?

It’s on the daily mail website

Butterme · 13/05/2026 16:16

Why didn't anyone report three women were missing?

I assumed they had been on a night out and then decided to go for a swim and then got into trouble in the water.
So they technically wouldn’t have been missing for very long if it happened during the night/early hours.

It was pretty common for us to have a few drinks on the beach and then go for a swim.

It’s such a shame whatever the reason 💐

IsabellaVireauxLaurent · 13/05/2026 16:16

any thing related to international espionage ?

TenTenTenAgain · 13/05/2026 16:16

@Newmeagain Thank you.

I was just about to post this. How horrific. What on earth has happened? Tragic accident?

Well the BBC article makes it very clear that they aren't looking for anyone so it sounds likely to be a tragic accident.

If my young adult kids go out, I assume they will be home late. I wouldn’t know they were missing till I got up (if they were home), or much later if they were in their flats. It’s such an awful story.

Lovemycat2023 · 13/05/2026 16:19

PhuckTrump · 13/05/2026 14:27

Would be helpful to know what they were wearing. Wetsuits? Swimming costumes? Street clothes? Nothing?

I didn’t see this in the BBC article after the police press conference.

They didn’t give that detail in the press conference because they need to identify the women and then contact their families. No one should have to find out a loved one has died through the media because, for example, someone is wearing a red striped costume or a pink dress.

Sunshinetime199 · 13/05/2026 16:20

TheKittenswithMittens · 13/05/2026 12:01

It's May, the sea is still very old. Noone would go swimming without a wetsuit.

Do you live near the UK coast? Sea swimmers all year without a wetsuit is totally normal.

Looseweightlooseinterest · 13/05/2026 16:20

Students on a night out. I was a student in Brighton . A few drinks was all it took to take risks and think that swimming/ paddling in the sea was a fun idea . Absolutely tragic outcome 😢

Yes, I think if I'd been out for the evening with friends yesterday and failed to come home, no one would have noticed as yet. Single women students (possibly), who'd be checking on them, especially if they were with their friends?

I'm sure they have family and friends who will be devastated, as I do, but I don't live with them, no one was expecting me anywhere this morning, even if someone had tried to contact me, they'd likely think I was busy. I don't think it's surprising if they haven't yet been reported missing, it would probably be a couple of days before my friends started ringing each other to see if anyone had heard from me. Unless of course they heard of three bodies, which I imagine has sent panic through many families with students in Brighton. 😪

Completely this @Pinribbons
Im a parent of a first year uni student. They have just started to go on the beach more and I know they’ve been after going out.
Absolute blind panic until I’d spoken to her this morning, I woke her up calling her . Never been so grateful that she picked up. Utterly devastated for all families involved.

TenTenTenAgain · 13/05/2026 16:29

@LinenSummer exactly. I didn't contact my daughter until midday when I saw the story. I knew she'd been at the club mentioned in the DM article last night but she lives away from home so I don't naturally check in with her after every night out.

My heart goes out to the families of those girls. What a tragedy.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/05/2026 16:29

Why the fuck is anyone going on about small boat crossings - do you even know where Brighton is?? I doubt many small boats are launching from Dieppe and Le Havre.

As everyone has said it is sadly most likely early morning sea swimmers or revelers from the night before (the area where they were found has a number of sea front night time places.)

Brighton does tend to get a large amount of visitors who are not familiar with the sea.

Just seen the update. How dreadfully sad.
