Three women's bodies found in the sea at Brighton

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

Why didn't anyone report three women were missing?

If it's a Channel crossing, from what I understand, it's rare that women go on the boats from France, and when they do they are pushed to the back / bottom, where the risk of being crushed is high.

If it's not a crossing, what on earth has happened?

Words can't express how evil this is.

I was a student at Essex many years ago. We would often drive across to Clacton to jump in the sea in the early morning. I don't think 1 of us thought about tides or how cold the water might be, or if there was any danger at all. We were fortunate, others aren't. Very sad indeed. And, of course, alcohol and cold water is not the best choice.

There is no indication of what happened yet. Let's not make any presumptions.

Could be a migrant boat
Could be murder
Could be swimmers who got into trouble
Could be any number of other causes.

It's sad, and of course concerning. It's ghoulish to make presumptions at this point.

Well what they are wearing should be a clue. Swim wear versus fully dressed.

A clue for who? Those who need to know will alteady know.

My guess is police already know, or at least have a narrow list of names to check, they'll know who was at the student night, for example; but if they're students living away from home, those who can formally identify them won't be local. Heartbreaking.

"migrant boat" Do you mean a boat with people trying to seek asylum on board?

Exactly this.
Racism is rife on here.

Mumsnet normalising racism of none white people regardless of where they were born or died.

If you dare say owt you’re called a snowflake or similar.

I’m disgusted daily at what has become the norm.

Correct. Try the other site for more racism. Slithering about.

Oh this is so sad with the update.

DS was looking at Brighton Uni. I think I may be happier with a more inland uni now. Must be quite tempting for a lot of the students to think a swim is a good idea after a night out. Tragic.

StarCourt · 13/05/2026 16:47

@BlackTogetherAgain how is it evil?

Pickledonion1999 · 13/05/2026 16:49

Seems like students. Absolutely tragic. I have a student dd at Bournemouth and she's always on the beach. thoughts with all affected.

Port1aCastis · 13/05/2026 16:49

This is very sad and there will be families grieving tonight. I live near the sea and went night swimming a lot when I was younger usually after a night out. This tragedy seems to have stirred up the racists though, it seems someone's death is meat for the media ghouls.

It's May, the sea is still very old. Noone would go swimming without a wetsuit.

I swim every morning at 7 am with no wetsuit all year round, assuming conditions are right in terms of waves and tides.

bookworm14 · 13/05/2026 16:30

Daily Mail are saying it was students. What an appalling tragedy. https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-15814733/women-brighton-died-student-night.html

Hope the immigration ghouls will get back in their box now.

How dreadfully sad.

RIP girls.

Oh and the amount of people who go way too close to the edge at Beachy Head is mind blowing. Also people sitting on the beach up against the cliffs when the area is notorious for substantial cliff falls.

I live very near BH, I don’t visit there, it makes me very anxious.

5MinuteArgument · 13/05/2026 16:54

It's very sad but unfortunately the sea claims many lives. I've swum in the sea many times always without a wetsuit. The sea is wonderful but it also can be dangerous.

The other ghouls are ok, then?

Agreed it’s to be respected.

NameChangeMay2026 · 13/05/2026 16:58

They were students at a night out at Quarters nightclub and decided to go for a swim. Their bags were found on the beach, and there was a big student night at Quarters.

I know that area. Quarters is right on the beach. I used to go clubbing there in the mid-Nineties when it was called The Beach. Never did we think of going into the sea after a night out. It was pitch-black, for a start. But I was always driving so didn't drink. Maybe their judgment was clouded if they had been drinking.

There are dreadful rip tides along that part of the coast, and it makes sense that they were found at Black Rock if they went into the water at Quarters. BR is east of there, and the currents push east.

I think it's a tragic case of very young adults simply not realising how powerful the sea can be. Just dreadful. I am very sorry for them.

I don't live near there anymore, but I know it. I agree with you about it making you anxious. One gust of wind and you'd be over the edge. Crazy how close to the edge people get.

5MinuteArgument · 13/05/2026 17:05

People have swum in the sea and in rivers and walked along cliff tops for thousands of years. It's part of human nature. But there are risks involved.

Very sad. RIP.

Bromptotoo · 13/05/2026 17:13

The main migrant route is across the Dover Straight though there has been some movement into Belgium and west beyond Boulogne to avoid Police surveillance.

Currents are reportedly west>east. Even if people were moved that far by currents it's unlikely three bodies would remain together and very likely they'd be badly decomposed.

Given the reported ages I'd guess either revellers or swimmers.

As to why they've not been missed I don't think 48 hours is a massive time.

Reported as 20-30. When I was single and in that age group living in an HMO my Mother was concerned how long I could be missing before my absence was noted. I didn't swim but did a lot of solo hill walking.

It’s been confirmed they weren’t migrants FFS. People are obsessed.

Go away. Not the time or place.

RIP to the reported ‘three females’ who have been found following a student night out.
