No idea what he is talking about .. The last march that Tommy Robinson organised was absolutely respectful and trouble free . Certainly didn’t look to me like FAR right .. Just normal everyday working class people.

And there we have it. Didn't take long, did it?

ProudAmberTurtle · 11/05/2026 10:53

First Labour MPs are reacting and it's not good.

"That was a speech an opposition party leader should be making, not someone who's been in power for two years."

"That was dull."

but what about north sea oil?

Licences for extracting north sea oil are owned by a mixture of companies such as BP and Shell etc. So any oil or gas extracted belongs to those companies. It's processed and sold on the international market. The only gain that the UK gets from extraction comes in the form of taxes on the companies and their UK employees.

WellErrr · 11/05/2026 10:57

He just does not get it. At all.

No Keir, we don’t want to see the changes faster - we don’t LIKE the changes!

No Keir, it’s not just that you’ve struggled to get the message out - we’ve heard the message and we hate it!

Working people need to feel better off. It really is that simple. Key word is 'Labour'. No-one should be better off not working than working. No matter how many children they've chosen to have.

Totally agree

The one last September? I doubt the 26 police officers who were injured, 4 seriously, would agree with you.

He's got a three-pronged plan to Make Labour Great Again:

  1. Renationalise British Steel - which employs less than 3,500 people
  2. Give more taxpayers' money to the EU - it wasn't clear what we'd get back in return for that
  3. He wants younger people to get more jobs - it wasn't clear how that will be achieved

That was it!

He literally listed what he’d do for youth unemployment and skills

I’m not a supporter but your take is inaccurate

Firetreev · 11/05/2026 11:01

ProudAmberTurtle · 11/05/2026 10:24

It's an almost hilariously bad speech.

Trying to both pander to the right by talking about immigration (but not doing anything about it) and trying to pander to the left by talking about renationalising British Steel (whoopsie-doo).

They literally are lowering immigration. It's just not being fairly reported.

So children should live in poverty? Be removed?

Hallowedturf · 11/05/2026 11:03

Starmer cannot make fundamental changes/reforms because his back benchers will not allow it.

Simples.

1.I mean we do need a steel industry at home because of security but it's hardly a massive big whoop. Nationalise the water industries maybe.

  1. Just bloody rejoin the EU. No referendum, do it now and ask in 2 years if people want to leave. He has nothing to lose
3. They have cut the adult skills budget by 6% , apprenticeship offers are on the floor already and cutting adult skills provision means no money for staff to facilitate learning on the apprenticeships or other training needed to get young people ( and the unemployed) into work. A bit crap overall, but the problem is everyone else is either worse or will get nowhere because it's the party who are the problem.

You can't just "rejoin" EU though.
Agree on water!

I said in 2024 the best thing would be a tory/reform coalition.
Then pretty quickly the country would have been in such dire straights that a true socialist Labour government could have taken the reins
But I'm afraid that would require national trauma and suffering- like after WW2.
A Labour govt was elected by a landslide and implemented huge social housing programmes and the welfare state and NHS.
I thought KS a fool to take on the job after 14 years of tory austerity and brexit.
The idiots who voted for it need to suffer the consequences and maybe then they will be quiet...
£20k for a hip operation? Nice loan to pay for it...options available!
No more holiday or sick pay or maternity pay?
Leaving the ECHR and removing the Equality Act?
Removing renters rights?
I'm sure it'll be FINE...

I would like the 2 child cap to be reintroduced.. We limited the amount of children we had because we could not afford a 3rd .. I would also stop the DWP paying extra benefits for families with multiple wives .

Again, it's pretty disingenuous to start a thread supposedly about a Starmer speech, when actually, it's a blatant Right wing/Tommy Robinson/bigoted pitch. We see it OP.

StephQ1 · 11/05/2026 11:13

That was about as bad a speech as you could possibly imagine. Labour will destroy the country if they stay in government for any sustained period of time. Truly awful stuff.

Firetreev · 11/05/2026 11:16

GustavaKlimt · 11/05/2026 10:29

Only lasted 5 minutes. It's awful and his delivery is annoying.
It's easy to say all these things, but so far they've not delivered anything

It lasted a lot longer than five minutes. They've delivered a reduction in immigration, increased the minimum wage, introduced the renter's and worker's rights bills, multiple interest rate reductions, and reduced NHS waiting list times amongst many other things. Their comms aren't good, but they've achieved a lot.

This country is in a mess and it's going to take a long time to turn it around. Those who shout the loudest about the mess we're in and despise Labour, are often the architects of this mess. I'm looking at Reform and the Tories. If you voted for Brexit and the Tories you're massively responsible for the mess we're currently in.

Lemon … I think you think I’m trying to pretend to not be right wing .. I’m fully right wing I have no shame in saying that so I’m not really sure what you are trying to achieve.

Looking at the responses from commentators across the spectrum on X, I'd say this speech has gone down VERY badly.

It's now a case of does West get the 81 MPs to support her so Streeting can become PM in the next few days, or does the party wait a few months in an attempt to get Burnham in?

Can the country afford this chaos to last a few months?

The mess is the open borders, the massive tax hikes and the huge spending on the lazy to not work. And that was started by the Tories and ramped up by ...

The Labour Party.

How do you explain the number of voters who voted Reform in the locals last week.

And how do you explain Labour losing Scotland and Wales?

Thanks
