Who enjoys wine daily? No judgement please! Just curious to know who else enjoys wine as much as I do and if it’s common or I am just crazy!

So I do have two very young children, aged 3 and a 10 month old baby and I work full time so things can get very stressful. It gets to about 6pm and I just crave a glass of wine every single night and it definitely helps after a very hectic day! To be honest I have always had at least 1 glass of wine most nights from the age of about 25, I am now 32. Some people I know think it is mad that I have a glass or two almost every night but I feel this is so normal, especially for Mums. Who else is with me on this or am I not normal?! 😂

No, I am a moderate drinker. The arbitrary guidelines issued by governments are the result of decades of one sided pushing and funding os research by organisations with a clear anti alcohol agenda.

Which organisations ?
The WHO ?
The department of health ?
Proffesor Nutt ?

In reality is the opposite is true, the information about the health consequences of "moderate drinking" have been suppressed for at least 15 years by the alcohol imdistry. If you have been drinking most days of your adult life and are now in your 50's without either dependancy or health problems you have been lucky- your luck may not hold. I am 50 and since beong on HRT I am choosing not to drink so as to minimise my cancer risk.

It’s also 44 units a week. The maximum recommended amount is 14.

To be fair the recommended amount is 0

Yes, apologies. The maximum safe limit.

You’re not though. Moderate means something within average limits. Drinking most days isn’t average at all. And the alcohol industry actually funds lots of research to try and push that alcohol has some benefits. You know what research has found? It’s an increasing risk factor in the development of all major UK NCDs - including the main 4: heart disease, obesity, cancer and diabetes.

Sadly I reached the point of enjoying up to 3 bottles of white wine daily so I had to quit or risk heading for an early grave. Having said that I always thought that the recommendation of 14 units a week was very low & that having wine daily can be ok, as long as it’s not massive glasses full. Red wine is good for your heart.

This has been widely discredited.

Red wine may be good for the heart - the research is controversial and inconclusive. However, the alcohol itself is far more dangerous than the wine is helpful. The same bio actives in wine can be found in fruit and vegetables without the added ethanol.

I had a thorough medical for my residence visa and was really worried about the liver function tests as I love a few glasses of wine. I also had a tropical disease as a child which affects the liver.

My liver function test results were fine. According to the doctor, this I because I follow a plant-based diet. Eating meat and dairy is far more damaging to your liver than drinking alcohol.

I am not sure if that’s the case, or just her opinion, but it kind of makes sense.

Cheers 🍷

That Dr needs their license revoking. Unless you are drinking 1 or 2 units a week ( a total of 175ml wine) and comparing it to a diet without any fruit or veg mafe up entirely of UPF this is absolute bullshit. Elevation of LFTs is a very late sign. Your Dr should know better.

Research, both for and against alcohol, is often funded by organisations with an agenda. Whether that be the anti alcohol temperance based organisations or by the alcohol industry to counter it, but the reality is that governments cherry pick the research that best serves their purpose. They choose the ‘alcohol bad’ narrative to justify the extortionate taxes they place on the alcohol industry and, ultimately, us as the consumers.

Alcohol has a mixed health profile and risk is rarely binary, but anti alcohol research is regularly reported in a scaremongering fashion to tie in with the continuation of hefty taxation.

There is absolutely no doubt that sustained very heavy drinking (over 44 units a week) is harmful, but there is very inconclusive research as to what a safe limit of drinking is. Looking at data, from research funded by both sides of the argument, there is strong evidence that 1-2 drinks a day is not significantly harmful, as long as the drinking sits along side a generally healthy diet and level of stress and activity.

Yes, I am. Moderate drinking is broadly defined globally as 1-2 drinks a day and that includes countries where drinks are typically much stronger than UK ones. Am I a typical British drinker? Then no, I am fully aware that most people don’t drink weekly, never mind daily.

See my other post re disputed research.

She is not my doctor, she is an Australian Government doctor, who decides whether somebody is healthy enough to be granted a residence visa. She assesses cases where the applicant has a compromised liver so I am sure she knows more than some twat on Mumsnet.

‘Up to 1’ for women I think, certainly that’s the definition in places like the Mayo clinic.
