Who enjoys wine daily? No judgement please! Just curious to know who else enjoys wine as much as I do and if it’s common or I am just crazy!

So I do have two very young children, aged 3 and a 10 month old baby and I work full time so things can get very stressful. It gets to about 6pm and I just crave a glass of wine every single night and it definitely helps after a very hectic day! To be honest I have always had at least 1 glass of wine most nights from the age of about 25, I am now 32. Some people I know think it is mad that I have a glass or two almost every night but I feel this is so normal, especially for Mums. Who else is with me on this or am I not normal?! 😂

I used to have a couple of glasses of wine every night when my kids were small. I so looked forward to that first cold glass of white when work was over, dinner was done, and the kids were in bed! It didn't used to affect me at all, I didn't really get a hangover, I could do exercise the next day etc.

But now I'm almost 50, it affects me so much more. I started to realise that I probably needed to cut down a few years ago as I knew I should start to think more about my health and I just felt a bit rubbish the day after drinking any alcohol. I wasn't able to do as much with the kids, focus at work or feel up to exercising or anything. Also I was starting to look quite bloated in my face and it definitely made me put on weight. So now I only occasionally have a couple of glasses on a Saturday night or when I go out (not often!).

VenusClapTrap · 07/05/2026 21:51

My PIL have a small glass of wine with dinner every night. They’ve always done it. They’re in their 80s and in rude health. They eat healthily and cycle everywhere, which I guess offsets the alcohol.

Biosblbay · 07/05/2026 21:52

@Bunnyotter1896 I don’t get drunk, I hate it, I cannot do hangovers like I used to when I was in my 20s, but back then I wouldn’t drink in the week and would binge when partying at the weekend. I don’t drink more at weekends, still just the glass or two, I love nothing more than having a glass when I am cooking dinner with the music on!

Its fine to have 1 glass a night 175 x 7 = 17 units so close to the guidelines. But it so easily becomes 2, then 4 on a Friday. Its harder to keep the units down when you drink everyday. And it gets harder to stop. Stick to Fri/Sat/Sun

Biosblbay · 07/05/2026 21:54

@hereforthelolz already happening 😂

Oh be careful. You’ll be labelled an alcoholic in about 3, 2, 1….

That's because it is how people become alcohol dependent without realising it. Sadly I have seen it happen more than once

Mamabear487 · 07/05/2026 21:55

Normal in this house. 2 young kids working and looking after the house I need wine. Just had 3 glasses of Prosecco 🤫

I have at least 2 large glasses of wine a night and don’t give a fuck what the pearl clutchers have to say

this sums it up for me.

Biosblbay · 07/05/2026 21:56

@AlcoholicAntibiotic I have half a bottle a night with say about 2 nights off, I definitely have 3-4 bottles per week! But never ever get drunk, something I do not enjoy!

OP posts:
Slowdownyouredoingfine · 07/05/2026 21:56

2 small glasses or large? That genuinely makes a difference I think. 2 large glasses can easily be 1/2 a bottle of wine which is 3.5 bottles a week which is somewhat over (think 2 bottles is the recommended units.) It’s good yours hasn’t crept up to more than 2 glasses over a long period of time though. I started drinking more in lockdown and it got out of hand I was drinking 4-5 glasses a night and felt like shit all the time! I’ve stopped now but when I do drink I can easily polish the bottle so I just do it infrequently!

DanceMumTaxi · 07/05/2026 21:56

I’d love a glass of wine a day, but I’m often driving kids to/from activities so I don’t. I don’t drink anything if I’ve got to drive.

StrictlyCoffee · 07/05/2026 21:57

Pugglywuggly · 07/05/2026 21:25

I'd say it's common, and it's certainly what I used to do. But it gradually caught up with me. It's a lot of units per week.

Absolutely this

it’s normalised but it’s not healthy or normal

I’m almost 5 years off it now.

Hatty65 · 07/05/2026 21:57

I'm a teetotaller who doesn't like the taste of wine at all, but was always quite envious of women who had a couple of glasses of wine a night, or relaxed with friends and a bottle of wine. It felt sophisticated and I really did try, but I've never managed it. I've never managed to feel elegant or anything other than boring with my glass of Diet Pepsi. I've tried all sorts of alcohol like a G&T, vodka, barcardi breezers, etc.

I just really hate the taste of alcohol. I've always felt I was probably missing out somehow though! My only consolation is that someone can probably have my liver when I'm done with it.

Biosblbay · 07/05/2026 21:58

@Mamabear487 love this! 🥂🍾😂

You can drink as much as you like - it's your life

But calling calling people Pearl Clutchers just because they have a different attitude to alcohol and don't want to damage their health or even lose their life to it is just downright nasty amd uncalled for.

Exactly this

If I was still drinking I’d be a right fucking mess by now. If I were even still alive

CatamaranViper · 07/05/2026 21:59

I refuse to drink during the week, even when I really want a glass.
I have most of a bottle on a Friday and then again on a Saturday.
Lots of people smoke, eat junk food, drink coffee etc, I don't. Wine is my vice. I exercise 5 days a week and eat clean, so wine is my treat.

HangingOver · 07/05/2026 21:59

It's pretty normal to crave something addictive.

StrictlyCoffee · 07/05/2026 22:00

Thing is OP you’ll probably now do what I used to and focus on the posts who say it’s fine to validate your choice that it’s fine. It’s still not fine to self medicate with substances

Biosblbay · 07/05/2026 22:00

@DanceMumTaxi your name says it all! I won’t be able to do it anyway when my kids want to do after school classes etc. when the kids are grown up you can ;)

FamingolosForDays · 07/05/2026 22:02

I was like this. Soon realised I wasnt stopping at 1. Have stopped completely mon-thurs, and try not to drink at the weekends when I have the DC. I relax this a bit when im on annual leave but frankly I dont sleep well and it really does make me feel like shit the next day, even if i have only had one! Im only 35 🤣
I lost loads of weight. But I do love a cold crisp, white wine....

BlackRowan · 07/05/2026 22:02

That’s because you are 32!
im 45 with young kids and hangovers from ONE glass of wine are real; id be dead from hangovers if I had a glass every day.

enjoy it while it lasts! :)

Biosblbay · 07/05/2026 22:02

@CatamaranViper this is me, I don’t smoke, I eat very clean, but I do drink in the week as well as a weekend, but not to get drunk. I just wondered if othered were the same as me. I’ve had 2 glasses already and just about to have a green tea and get myself to bed ☺️

To all the pearl-clutchers… do you eat sausages or bacon? Pastries? Things cooked in seed oils? If so, you are doing far more damage to your health thank someone who has a couple of glasses of wine a night.
