Who enjoys wine daily? No judgement please! Just curious to know who else enjoys wine as much as I do and if it’s common or I am just crazy!

So I do have two very young children, aged 3 and a 10 month old baby and I work full time so things can get very stressful. It gets to about 6pm and I just crave a glass of wine every single night and it definitely helps after a very hectic day! To be honest I have always had at least 1 glass of wine most nights from the age of about 25, I am now 32. Some people I know think it is mad that I have a glass or two almost every night but I feel this is so normal, especially for Mums. Who else is with me on this or am I not normal?! 😂

Yes, especially when our teens were similar ages, glass of wine helped survive another day in the nappy toddler trenches. Do what keeps everyone thriving & surviving.. in 50’s now .. I love wine but it’s too hard on my system.. I’m just as happy with herbal tea mid week or glass or two end of week.

CoastlineAtlantic · 07/05/2026 23:02

I don't know if it's normal or not but I think a lot of people do enjoy a glass of wine in the evening.

I'm certainly not one to judge as until recently I always had a glass of wine while preparing the evening meal and one with it.

I haven't had anyone lately except when going out for a special occasion meal.
As someone previously pointed out, it usually does catch up with you at some point, and it did with me.
No one on MN can tell you how bad it is for you because somewhere in your head you know it's true and you'll have to find it out yourself someday until then, 🥂 Cheers!

StripedVase · 07/05/2026 23:08

you can't really ask for no judgement and also ask if you're crazy! Do lots of people do it? Yes. Is it a dependency or potentially going to become one? Also yes.

It’s a really slippery slope so I would be careful. It sounds like you’ve got a strong habit formed there and are associated wine with ‘time to switch off’ at the end of the day. That’s going to become a really hard habit to break over time and may well escalate. It did for my mum! People aren’t just being killjoys when they say this is a not a good idea, there is a real reason and people may well be speaking from experience..

plodding6 · 07/05/2026 23:13

I drink probably 3 or 4 nights a week. A glass or two of wine, maybe a can of gin and tonic. I must admit I do enjoy my sober days but I also enjoy wine to wind down. It just gives me a lovely relaxed feeling. If I had to go without it because I needed to drive, health reasons or had other commitments I absolutely could. It isn’t a dependency, it’s a willpower issue - giving up something I enjoy in the same way I can’t give up chocolate or Pringles. But alcohol is such a touchy subject on here, it’s hard to get sensible answers because if you admit to drinking even semi regularly people will say you have a problem.

Waitingfordoggo · 07/05/2026 23:18

I used to when I was your age. But it started escalating and having an impact on my health and relationships so I went cold turkey and haven’t drunk wine since then (about 15 years). I’ve subsequently realised that I don’t even like the taste of wine- I just drank to squash my anxiety and get fuzzy/merry/pissed.

Nowadays I’ll have some beer or cider occasionally, but only in the summer or I’m away somewhere warm on holiday, so only a handful of occasions a year.

TeaPot496 · 07/05/2026 23:21

Drinking four bottles of wine a week is less common than it used to be, because most people don't want to increase the risk of losing their health (physical and mental), their looks or their money. Your choice though.

It's also 2,500+ extra (empty) calories.

You can drink as much as you like - it's your life

But calling calling people Pearl Clutchers just because they have a different attitude to alcohol and don't want to damage their health or even lose their life to it is just downright nasty amd uncalled for.

We will all lose our lives. I get what you’re saying though.

No, I value my health.

My Mum lost hers to it aged 58. Lying in a hospital bed, incontinent of blood from her behind. Please don't be flippant.

Leavesandthings · 07/05/2026 23:30

A problem with a daily drinking habit is that it is a type of drinking which can lead to problematic drinking easily.
One turns into two, "I like it" becomes "I crave it, I don't like not having it".

It's worth being aware of. Several alcohol free days a week is about liver/physical health but also maintaining a balanced relationship with alcohol.

I am not flippant. I am struggling with it myself. I am sorry about your mum. Xx

Random321 · 07/05/2026 23:33

If it's not a problem, then stop for the next 7 days.

If you can't, then it's a problem.

It's how a lot of alcoholics start, small and their in control & then it escalates and you are in too deep.

Anyine who ever asked me if they were drinking too much ended up an alcoholic, and often in a short space of time.

Franjipanl8r · 07/05/2026 23:33

Have you tried stopping for a couple of weeks to see if you can?

ItsBestServedCold · 07/05/2026 23:34

Biosblbay · 07/05/2026 21:56

@AlcoholicAntibiotic I have half a bottle a night with say about 2 nights off, I definitely have 3-4 bottles per week! But never ever get drunk, something I do not enjoy!

Your maths doesn’t add up!

@TeaPot496 i am going to use your texts to challenge myself to actually be completely sober tomorrow. I know i can xx

SmallandSpanish · 07/05/2026 23:38

Whether it’s normal is irrelevant. It’s how you feel about it that matters. And how your body feels.

SherlockIsHome · 07/05/2026 23:39

Slippery slope
I went through a phase where I thought I "needed" a "treat" of a glass of wine or cava to unwind every night or 2 but I stopped cold turkey 12 months ago and haven't looked back
It's terrible for your health and sleep and causes cancer.
Once you realise it's actually a poison that damages your body, it becomes easier to leave it the bottle on the supermarket shelf.
Let's be honest, it doesn't even taste nice

It’s very common just not on Mumsnet

It really isn't. Mumsnet is the only place I've seen people drinking every day and not considering it is alcoholism.

I am on an all inclusive resort but i can do it. I know i feel happy up until first alcoholic drink. So I’ll just not do that. I will report back tomorrow xxx

This surprises me. What about the 80s and 90s? France?

During lockdown with small kids I felt like you OP but the scales didn’t thank me for it and I am back to a couple of glasses at the weekend. Now I crave a cup of tea and the sofa at 6pm!

Bishbashbush · 08/05/2026 00:01

It’s more common than you’d think but it’s not normal and it’s not healthy to be consuming alcohol every single day. I would love to drink wine every night too but I don’t.

Yeswoman · 08/05/2026 00:06

I definitely crave it most days, but I don't. I'd get so fat. Plus makes me feel like shit.

One thing that has changed is the size of wine glasses, the 70s and 80's ones seem tiny now! Plus the average strength of wine is quite high.

All in all, the only two people I know who were drinking daily to relax after putting the kids to bed in their thirties have both run into problems by their fifties. One has phoned me up slurring their words, and the other drinks with her partner who is alcohol dependent. It hasn't all ended in disaster yet, but I think those who drink daily look older and their skin rougher than those that don't, and it can be harder to have just one or two glasses, and it goes towards two or three or an entire bottle in large glasses every night.

I think it's possible to step back from that though, and have some consciousness around it, most of my female friends have cut back a bit at menopause and many either don't drink any more or only drink socially.
