What is your daily step count?

I try to do at least 5000 steps and feel
guilty if I haven’t done enough!

What is your daily count? Do you check each day?

OP posts:
Bringemout · Yesterday 07:26

Do people just walk really fast, i generally do 6000 steps in an hour of walking, during the week I get between 6-7000 steps, weekends are generally around 10’000, no intentional walking or running. I understand if you have a job that keeps you on your feet or you have a dog but for “general pottering” do people live in mansions or something?

I was considering getting a walking pad to up my steps.

Absolutely this is my problem. Finding enough time I am restricted most days to find an hour to just go for a walk. Other movement does not give me meaningful steps.

Same

Same but shorter legs means fewer steps, I am tall.

Usually around 15,000 - sometimes 20,000 at weekends. Not bad for someone with stage four cancer I think!

Normally about 7000. I work mostly from home so have to make an effort to get out for a walk round the block at lunchtime and for at least an hour at the end of the day. More at the weekend because I enjoy walking and hiking and have the time to do it. Hate being cooped up when the sun is shining!

Badbadbunny · Yesterday 07:35

10K on average. Never less than 8k unless I'm ill. I live a mile from my office (self employed so I chose where to rent an office as I intended to be able to walk), so walk to/from work, and also have a lunchtime walk of a couple of miles. On a "normal" day, that's around 8k. I have a standing desk at work, which means I walk around the office more, as I'm already stood up, it's not the same effort to stand after sitting down, so instead of accumulating tasks to do, like getting a file, making a coffee, copying a document at the same time, I'll just do all that as and when I think of it, so lots more steps just pottering around the office. I have a step counter app on my phone so know exactly how many steps I've done.

Not easy on heavy rain days as I don't like getting soaked, so will drive to/from work instead, but still doing a couple of thousand steps around the office and I finish earlier (due to time worked rather than walking) so I'll walk at home as I have a treadmill on the integral garage and do probably 6/7k, which takes me up to my minimum of 8k

At weekends I just take myself out for a couple of walks - I have quite a few "loops" from home based around canal towpaths, or I'll take the car to the shore or to a couple of country walks along old disused railway tracks. Maybe on a nice weekend, I'll do maybe 15k steps.

Also amazing how many steps you can accumulate just going shopping etc. I try to park at the far end of car parks, so get some steps in just between the car and the shops, or in town, I'll park outside the centre and walk in (save parking charges too!).

Even "pottering about" in your own small home all day can accumulate a few thousand steps (unless you live in a tiny flat!). We have a relatively small 3 bed house with garden. Even without actively going out to walk, on a "staying in" day, I can surprise myself checking the app to see I've done something like 3k steps. That's just doing house-y things like a bit of cleaning, vacuuming, taking rubbish out to the bins, up and down stairs several times to the loo, between kitchen/lounge/dining room when preparing meals, drinks, washing up afterwards, etc., going to the front door a couple of times for the postman/evri/amazon deliveries, gathering laundry, setting washing machine, put out wet laundry on the line in the garden, bringing it in again later, ironing it and taking it all upstairs to put away. That's not even running around children or walking the dog - just "normal" daily activities if you don't actually just stagnate in a chair all day watching TV! Always something needs doing. Even more steps if we're doing some DIY or gardening.

If you have a sedentary job it’s very hard to find the time. Well if you have other things going on in your life too.

This bank holiday we have a BBQ weekend with friends, cinema, trip to Lido, meal & drinks out with friends, play dates etc. I think I will only manage 10k steps on 1 of the days.

I don’t find this generates many steps because a lot of the time I may be uptight and my upper body might be moving but I am not actually stepping.

bugalugs45 · Yesterday 07:48

Try to do 10k as a min , work days are higher and I do walk my dog daily so that helps . A couple of lazy days per month is normal here , but it averages out

WhereAreWeNow · Yesterday 07:51

Always 10k. Sometimes 15k if it's been a busy day.

ToRideOrNotToRide · Yesterday 08:24

What I find shocking is/ sad is dog owners of active breeds whose step count is like 5k per day.

Pineapplesunshine · Yesterday 08:33

I’m finding this really interesting in terms of the variations. I live in a city and don’t like driving so walk everywhere, but also have realised recently that I need regular movement to stay sane (never more than in peri). My watch tells me I average 21k steps - some days more and some days less. It also tells me that of the people in my age group of 45-49 i walk more than 99% of people. I mention that to give some perspective re those of us posting lots of steps. I would also say my watch double counts so includes times I am recording gym activity, such as cross trainer, as steps as well. I work from home, but take my dog for a walk after work to clear my head - normally an hour or two, often twice on weekend days. I definitely do less steps when it’s really rainy though!

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · Yesterday 08:47

The trouble with Fitbit type trackers is that they don't differentiate between the pottering about steps and the "proper" walks, so the 5000 steps ironing and vacuuming don't mean so much! Those people who only track steps when they grab their phones and use step trackers on them are probably getting much more realistic numbers. I often see 4-500 steps in a day and I haven't left the house!

Peanutbutteryday · Yesterday 08:56

3,000 on a Sunday but often I’ll then make the effort to go for a run to get it up to c 6,000.
c20k in the week but that’s due to nursery pick up and drop off x 2 (20 min walk each way) and usually pop out with baby in the day. On Mat leave. Need to shift baby weight anyway!

maftaz · Yesterday 09:22

Some of you must be walking in your sleep. 😊

Do you have your monitor/watch on 24/7 even in the shower!

I probably do a lot more, but overall around 5k. Depends on how long I have my watch on my wrist as I take it off a lot, and never wear it in bed, not that I'd be walking much there except to and from the loo a million times a night!

I think it depends on your stage in life, walking to work, running after kids, deliberately doing the steps etc. I just incorporate it into daily life, but consistently. I'm retired, and am very happy with my average 5k a day. That's more than enough to keep the wheels oiled at my age. I think when you push to achieve a certain number, the enjoyment goes out of it, if you do it without noticing much, that's better, well it is for me.

A step is a step, it's all movement. The job of a step counting device is to count steps and they are working as intended. Whatever impact the activity has on you is a different matter. The device is doing its job correctly and the OP asked about daily step count.

henlake7 · Yesterday 09:44

I do about 10k on average (I have a dog though and no car!).
I also usually do cardio on my exercise bike and ministepper everyday as well but obviously that isnt counted.

ifonly4 · Yesterday 10:06

No idea! However, those at work who have a counter say they do a minimum of 8,000 steps a day. On top of that I walk everywhere within a couple of miles, even to do the shopping and two three exercise classes a week.

sunflowersandsunsets · Yesterday 10:10

Around 16-20k but I’m a dog walker. At weekends it’s much, much less 🤣

But it doesn’t matter, movement is movement - whether it’s pottering in the garden, vacuuming, walking the dog or running - it’s all getting your heart going and keeping your healthy.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · Yesterday 10:12

Usually 25,000, because of the school run.

Why? I’ve put a tracker on my dog before and my 2 miles is easily 5+ for him when he’s off lead and running about.

Exactly this. I don’t see how your body can differentiate between a long walk in the woods and pottering around your house doing jobs. Obviously one is more stop/start but you’re still moving!

LimbOnTheTreeTheTreeInTheHoleTheHoleInTheGround · Yesterday 10:18

Mine was probably about 3k per day, the last 3 weeks I've really made an effort to lose weight and cut my calories and upped my steps to 12k per day, often just walking around the kitchen table as I have FND. I've lost 5 kilos so far.
