Been told I had a South African accent but I’m from SE England. 😮

Mammyloveswine · 29/04/2026 16:23

Ihaveneedofwaternear · 29/04/2026 16:24

Geordie here as well - people have assumed Welsh and Scottish.

ForPinkDuck · 29/04/2026 16:27

Yes i have an estuary accent get australian and south african alot.

ReignOfError · 29/04/2026 16:34

All the time when I lived in the US. My southern English accent is apparently from any other English speaking country you can think of.

I’ve even had people tell me I was wrong when I told them I was British.

Chatterlyssecret · 29/04/2026 16:37

A new Indian neighbour thought my west country accent was from Scotland.

Justploddingonandon · 29/04/2026 16:38

When I was in the US everyone said my accent was New Zealand. Admittedly it is a bit all over the place as I moved a lot growing up and Southern England is the closest most people get.

Dearg · 29/04/2026 16:40

In the US, apparently my fairly soft Scottish accent sounded Irish to some.

TigerRag · 29/04/2026 16:40

Someone though I was from Stevenage. Visiting Cardiff and someone thought I was from another (not UK) country

I'm from South West England

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/04/2026 16:42

Nope.

I’m from ‘Zummerzet’ and it’s unmistakable.

I sound like one of The Wurzels.

NoNeedToArgue · 29/04/2026 16:44

American, all the time - I’m northern Irish!

Simonjt · 29/04/2026 16:44

Mine is Nottingham/North London/Pakistani, no one has a chance working out what my accent is.

Shayisgreat · 29/04/2026 16:45

I'm Irish, sometimes people have asked if I'm from Canada.

loislovesstewie · 29/04/2026 16:46

Nope.

I’m from ‘Zummerzet’ and it’s unmistakable.

I'm from Wiltshire, I'm always being told I'm from Zummerzet! I tell them ' no, I'm a Moonraker'. They never get it.

pilates · 29/04/2026 16:47

In US, Australian

Poddingtonpeace · 29/04/2026 16:47

I was at a post office in Cambridge once. Me and another lady thought each other were Ozzies. Both Cantabrigians. We put it down to too much Neighbours and had a giggle.

Topsytails · 29/04/2026 16:49

Where in Scotland are you from?
Cardiff 🫣🙄😂
This has happened more than once!

kellygoeswest · 29/04/2026 16:49

I'm from Croydon but I've most commonly had Australian.

When I was travelling the Southern states of the USA I was asked if I was Canadian more than once.

AutumnLover1990 · 29/04/2026 16:50

Yes. An old man in the US thought I was french. I'm from the UK 😲🤣

Sskka · 29/04/2026 16:55

It’s funny being in America, where accents aren’t really a thing and people can’t really compute what they’re hearing. I remember being out in the west of Canada and an old man’s brow slowly furrowing when he heard my Scottish accent.

“Say you’re not from back east, are you?”

He wasn’t entirely wrong!

Mammyloveswine · 29/04/2026 16:23

Geordie here.. been asked what part of wales I’m from 😂

One of my best friends is from Ponteland and always got accused of the same. Luckily she has me and just points at me and says: 'I'm not, she is!'

And then I get the inevitable... 'You don't sound Welsh!'

Sorry for living in other countries!

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 29/04/2026 16:57

I’ve had Australian guessed a few times - actually from Southern England.

The person who came from the next county along should really have known better, though!

Iamacatslave · 29/04/2026 16:58

Where in Scotland are you from?
I am from Northern Ireland. 😑😑

wishfulthinking25 · 29/04/2026 16:58

My mum had an Irish accent and frequently gets asked if she’s from the US

ThisOneLife · 29/04/2026 17:00

“gotten”?
Are you American?
