There's no such thing as a neutral accent. Every accent gives hints about where you've lived.

Fair enough...maybe better described as generic bland southern! However, non-UK people here can't even tell that I'm from the UK. I think they hear American English far more than British English.

When I told a Canadian I was Scottish she said “ you speak English so well!” Considering how many Scots emigrate to Canada I was rather surprised.

lol 😂 that’s bizarre but maybe they meant you don’t have a very strong Scottish accent?

Accents have got sod all to do with how well a person speaks English! That Canadian was seriously clueless if they thought that!

My husband is South West born and bred but people always think he's from London cos he picked up a few London pronunciations from his Mum. My Somerset accent only seems to come out on certain words and phrases.

My accent has been mistaken for Scottish, a few times, and - bizarrely - for American once (not sure if deep south "howdy", or Boston "Hahvahd").
