When I moved schools as a teenager some.. lovely... girls that I met in my form room started saying nasty things about 'That Brummy bitch'. I believe they were aimed at me, but as my accent was most definitely quite Northern (and probably because these girls were not well liked anyway) they just got laughed at.

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 29/04/2026 17:03

Constantly! I get South African, Somerset! Australian, and I can hear the Scottish but they put me as east coast rather than west! Glaswegian here but very soft accent with a speech impediment!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 29/04/2026 17:03

Wales.

I’m from Bristol.

BobbySheenSomethingNewToDoNsoul · 29/04/2026 17:05

Arbroath nope Aberdeen
Not as bad as some on here at least it's the same country and 50 odd miles apart.

Sleepthief · 29/04/2026 17:07

Only one person has ever got my accent right! He had an exceptional musical ear and travelled widely for work and pinned it down to the actual town! I do have a pretty fucked up accent, to be fair…

Been told I had a South African accent but I’m from SE England. 😮

This happens to me often!! I grew up in the south, south west and wales (we moved a lot).

Andnowshesatoddler · 29/04/2026 17:10

I'm from Nottingham I get asked it I am from Wigan.

GoldMoon · 29/04/2026 17:11

I'm in Wiltshire born & bred . But I've been asked if I'm from Oxfordshire but in their defence , they are neighbouring counties so it's an easy mistake .

StopFeckingSnoring · 29/04/2026 17:14

Probably not the point of the thread but amazing how our country has so many accents. Birmingham and Coventry are really close? Scottish here so no idea what a Coventry accent sounds like, sorry.

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/04/2026 17:15

Nobody ever guesses where I (or my son) are from. I think it's common here in Cheshire as the old accent has died away (my parents have a broad Cheshire accent). Other than a slight northern bus/grass it's hard to tell.

MaidOfSteel · 29/04/2026 17:16

An American asked if I was Irish when I was on holiday there are few years ago. I am clearly (I believe) English.

I am mistaken for Geordie quite a bit, which is annoying. Anyone from my neck of the woods will understand.

thisfilmisboring123 · 29/04/2026 17:17

I’m a scouser who’s been asked more than once if I’m Irish.

Spidey66 · 29/04/2026 17:19

I was asked in San Diego if I was from Germany. I’m a bog standard Norf Londoner. I live in Somerset now but I practice my accent every day in front of the mirror to make sure I don’t lose it. I nearly called the bus driver ‘my lover’ the other day instead of ‘mate.’ I was horrified. I’ve had this accent for 60 years, I don’t want to lose it now!

It’s similar where I’m from - I think I’m about the last generation to have the “traditional” county accent (and mine’s nowhere near as strong as my parents’, and my grandparents’ accents were even stronger). It’s been subsumed into a more general “southern” accent, with hints of Estuary English.

AlpacaTheBags · 29/04/2026 17:21

I’m from Glasgow but I have an odd accent and people tend to assume that I’m from various parts of the Highlands or the Islands.

Yellowpapersun · 29/04/2026 17:24

I've been mistaken for an Aussie a few times. I'm from Lancashire!

Yiayoula · 29/04/2026 17:26

@FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee - 👋 from a fellow Bristolian.
@GoldMoon , @loislovesstewie and @TheLightSideOfTheMoon - weird isn’t it - to me, the Bristol, Wiltshire and Somerset accents are distinctly different from each other .
As is the Cornish one, but they all get lumped together as “West Country”.

Lovelanza · 29/04/2026 17:31

Been asked if I’m from Yorkshire a few times when I tell people where I am from they say I look Italian 😱

I”m from Manchester lol

Sunderland?

@ForPinkDuck@TheDogsMother
same

Plump82 · 29/04/2026 17:33

Regularly when abroad people think im Irish however I'm from Scotland. But to the "untrained" ear I can get why they're confused. However last time abroad I was asked by a Belgian man if I was Dutch.

Sidebeforeself · 29/04/2026 17:33

I’m from Yorkshire and my colleagues from down south think it’s a Lancashire accent 😱😱😱😱

TheBirdintheCave · 29/04/2026 17:36

I’m have a generic northern accent and get mistaken for American a lot 🤷🏻‍♀️

I can spot a Southport accent. I once had to take an onboarding photograph and the girl sounded exactly like my cousin. She was shocked when I guessed where she was from 😆

KeeleyJ · 29/04/2026 17:36

My FIL was refused service in a bar on holiday on one of the Channel Islands in the 1960's because of his 'German' accent (he was very broad Scottish so not impressed 😂). Post WWii feelings were still running high.

I no longer live in Wiltshire, sadly . I have to stop myself calling people my lover all the time! I did it to a person who thought it might be an invitation! I learnt my lesson.
