I’m Canadian but a lot of people think my accent is Irish, even people from Ireland

Arbroath nope Aberdeen
Not as bad as some on here at least it's the same country and 50 odd miles apart.

Coventry and Birmingham are completely different accents. There are a lot of Brummies in Cov though. (Got relatives there)

I used to be able to hear the difference between Nottingham and Leicester accents which are quite similar. Mansfield/Sutton way is different again. (Broader)That Ashfield MP (Lee Anderson ?) sounds like my Aunt's and Uncles. Very nostalgic to hear the accent, if not the content.

I code switch a lot so don't know what accent I have anymore.

Oops seemed to have quoted a random post. Sorry.

On the Costa Brava on holiday, we went for a ride on the road train. The train stopped for a 15 minute break before turning round and going back, at which point an elderly couple got on - they were speaking French and, to my very unpractised ear, they were wondering why the train wasn't moving. So I told them, in my schoolgirl French, that we had to wait for 15 minutes while the driver had a rest. Then we had a brief conversation, in the course of which I found out that they were from Brittany, and they asked me if I was from Paris!!!! At that time I hadn't spoken French for about 45 years and I really don't think my accent was ever THAT good.

MsFoxOnHoliday · 29/04/2026 21:36

I have a broad Lancashire accent, frequently get mistaken for Yorkshire. It's like the War of the Roses all over again Hmm

pambeesleyhalpert · 29/04/2026 21:52

I’m terrible at placing accents! I thought a school mum was Canadian but she’s Scottish!

MidnightMeltdown · 29/04/2026 21:52

Coventry is practically Birmingham! Midlands accents tend to sound the same if you’re not from there.

RaraRachael · 29/04/2026 22:00

I have an Aberdeen accent which is maybe not as familiar to people as southern Scottish.

I've been asked if I'm from Yorkshire or Irish. I've even overhead people speculating - just ask me!!

BauhausOfEliott · 29/04/2026 22:25

I’ve got a London accent and sometimes in the north of England people think I’m Australian. I also get asked if I’m from Essex.

Nodirectionhome · 29/04/2026 22:36

Nope. People usually guess correctly that I'm a Manc. 😁

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/04/2026 22:43

When speaking French (in the Caribbean)I’ve been asked if I’m Canadian.

I’m from Lancashire (and will happily speak French with a broad Lancashire accent to prove it).

MCF86 · 29/04/2026 23:09

Nobody has ever guessed where I'm from, but people have been surprised because they expect me to sound posh and I don't!

AmazingGreatAunt · 29/04/2026 23:20

Born in Scotland, grew up in the South West of England and was accused on Qatar Airlines flight, in business class, for not having an accent, by a flight attendant from Liverpool. Silly bitch.

mathanxiety · Yesterday 00:57

Australian (I'm Irish)

HollaHolla · Yesterday 01:00

I'm from central Scotland, and have a fairly neutral, flat, Scottish accent. When I lived in Australia, I got Irish ALL the time.
I'm also fluent in French, and apparently I sound French Canadian, rather than actual French, according to folks, when I'm in France.

If you're from Newfoundland, your accent will have a lot of SE Ireland to it (Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow).

Yowlers · Yesterday 01:05

Very often people guess it to be Northern Irish when it’s a Glaswegian accent but there’s a strong similarity so I get it.

Also had American and even carribbean a couple of times lol

occasionally been mistaken for Jordie and Scouse

I’m Canadian and I’ve been asked if I’m Irish!

It’s funny being in America, where accents aren’t really a thing and people can’t really compute what they’re hearing. I remember being out in the west of Canada and an old man’s brow slowly furrowing when he heard my Scottish accent.

“Say you’re not from back east, are you?”

He wasn’t entirely wrong!

Accents are definitely a thing in the US.

Funnywonder · 29/04/2026 20:36

Sigh. Gotten is not just American. We use it in NI. Officially, not just colloquially. In fact it’s used all over Ireland.

Anyway, back to the subject. Like a couple of pp’s, my NI accent has been mistaken for Scottish a few times. Usually by English people.

Gotten is also used in Scotland, or at least in Glasgow it is. I had no idea it was considered an American thing until Mumsnet.

Someone though I was from Stevenage. Visiting Cardiff and someone thought I was from another (not UK) country

I'm from South West England

Stevenage is weirdly specific.

My accent is pure Home Counties (unless I have occasion to mention Glasgow, which I say with a short, northern a). It's been mistaken for various things, but most commonly West Country (in the UK) or Dutch (by non-English speakers). Multiple people have also assumed I'm Irish, but based only on appearance not voice.

😆 I'm not sure whether you should be flattered by that or not, considering what most of France thinks of Paris.

More than one person has asked if I'm from Devon. I am not. I am from Dorset, and it turns out I feel quite strongly about it, because it is not Devon.

I'm Irish, sometimes people have asked if I'm from Canada.

I have, on occasions thought someone was American when they were Irish, (when they first spoke) until they start speaking more. And vice versa, I thought someone was Irish when they were American... for a minute or so...

ThisOneLife · 29/04/2026 17:00

“gotten”?
Are you American?

It's not just Americans who say 'gotten.' 🙄

Bet you think 'mom' is an Americanism too! (It's not, many people in the West Midlands say mom!)
