Would you sit on the driveway to avoid noisy neighbours?

Obviously I’d use a chair! Driveway is block paved, the width of the front of the house, would fit two cars, with fences either side and open to the front. Road has a mini rush hour for ten minutes in the morning, then perhaps one car every ten mins or less.

Neighbour has a hot tub, a barking dog, endlessly FaceTimes loudly in the garden, plays constant music and the kid screams like it’s being murdered from 6am onwards.

Would I look like a complete weirdo for taking a chair and sitting by my car? I just want to sit in the sun and read but the noise kills me every summer (can also hear it all inside).

It’s your house, sit whenever you like and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks.

Lomonald · 24/04/2026 16:48

Some people think it is "common" to sit in their front gardens that's probably why you are feeling weird about it just sit where it is peaceful.

A few neighbours have benches in the front garden some with drives because we get the sun there longer, some even <whispers> sit on their steps 😀

daffodilandtulip · 24/04/2026 16:55

Ha if I sat on the steps the dog would drive me batty! But yes, I think “being common” is my worry! Or just otherwise looking odd as it’s not a garden. To be fair, it does get the sun longer too.

I’m tempted to get a bench. My garden is so lovely and it makes me so sad that I can’t sit in it.

If it's better to sit at the front of your house then why not? But I'd also consider noise cancelling head phones and perhaps driving to somewhere nice to sit in a deck chair in the sun too. They sound horribly annoying, you have my sympathy!

Mum5net · 24/04/2026 17:04

OP, would you be able to soften your front garden with the clever inclusion of pots or a focal point to make it feel entirely normal to sit there. There must be something on Pinterest that would give ideas?
So annoying that you feel
displaced.
I know lots of people who sit in their front gardens so I must be really common

whatnextwiththis · 24/04/2026 17:05

Can you put something between you and the road like a trellis or similar? Create a small seating area in a corner against the house with heavy planters around your bench? You would still get sunshine but the view from the road would be restricted.

PillsBox · 24/04/2026 17:05

If I did this, I can guarantee at least 10 neighbours would stop and ask if I was locked out! 😁

MegMortimer · 24/04/2026 17:06

You have my sympathies, OP. Noisy neighbours are truly awful. Have you considered moving? it just seems so ridiculous that you can't use part of your home because of vile randoms.

LikelyLacking · 24/04/2026 17:07

I really feel for you OP. The last house I lived in had similar neighbours and the only time I ever really enjoyed the garden in peace was at 6am, nursing a coffee, before they all got up! There was no coming home from work and enjoying the garden because the noise was relentless.

There are many houses around where I live that have seats and benches in the front garden and they can be seen enjoying the sun in the afternoon/early evening. I’m sure once you’ve done it a few times you’ll relax and switch off to it, although you might get passers by wanting a chat - Probably about the weather!

I’m actually worried that the noisy one will be confrontational about it too! He’s very much, I know I’m loud and I don’t give a fuck, it’s my house.

Good ideas to add something. Anything decent would be stolen but I’ll have a think about what I can add. Maybe attached to the fence. Or imaginary bench.

I really can’t. I’m mortgage free, my business is based here, I’ve Reno the whole place. I can’t start again. They rent, and let’s face it, wherever I go, you’ve got the same risk of it starting again.

He might invite you into the hot tub since you're obviously locked out? 😁😂

Hahahaha that cheered me up! (But not the actual thought of him in the hot tub 🤢)

I want a front garden bench now! Do it.

Get a double seater or something start a trend! it is a shame it is shattering your peace have you tried earphones? If I ruled the world I would make hot tubs illegal !

It’s his brother and he often joins him for his drunken barbecues by the hot tub 😩

I used to sit on my drive in my old house, I used to park the car right at the front it to shield be a bit from the neighbours

Likeabirdjoyfully · 24/04/2026 17:18

My neighbours sit at the front because it's sunnier. They have a great social life out there with passers by. No reason not to.

Oh I was thinking, how can I sit not by the car, but actually, yes, I can just hide behind the car 🤣

So he doesn’t give a fuck about making noise but will get hostile if you sit out the front?

menace.
