Would you sit on the driveway to avoid noisy neighbours?

Obviously I’d use a chair! Driveway is block paved, the width of the front of the house, would fit two cars, with fences either side and open to the front. Road has a mini rush hour for ten minutes in the morning, then perhaps one car every ten mins or less.

Neighbour has a hot tub, a barking dog, endlessly FaceTimes loudly in the garden, plays constant music and the kid screams like it’s being murdered from 6am onwards.

Would I look like a complete weirdo for taking a chair and sitting by my car? I just want to sit in the sun and read but the noise kills me every summer (can also hear it all inside).

And it’s a chavvy blow up one with hundreds of LED lights that glow the house up all night

My neighbours got 1 of those during covid their grandkids now use it as a giant paddling pool!

Nourishinghandcream · 24/04/2026 17:38

My late Ddad always suggested we get a bench for our front garden as it would have been a lovely spot to sit but my OH thought it would look weird.
Fast forward 20yrs and my OH has just made a beautiful solid oak bench to put at the front of our new house.😆

Sunisgettinganewhaton · 24/04/2026 17:50

Does it have a lid? Throw some bird seed into it..
Said no honourable mner ever...
My dd endured 3 years of her ndn shouting of his dw to refill his drinks and singing until midnight 2 nights a week
Every
Single
Weekend.
Ju Ju Ju Ju..
*dw was called Julie.
You can report the ddog even if not the bbqs...

daffodilandtulip · 24/04/2026 18:15

Yeah it has a lid. I often fantasise about how I could pop it through the fence though.
Oh this neighbour is special. He doesn’t just save it for weekends. I’m sure he uses it instead of showering, because he literally spends all summer in it.

My dog lol.

You shouldn’t have to, but… earplugs?

Lomonald · 24/04/2026 18:26

Oh outside bath 🤢

Poppy61 · 24/04/2026 19:14

We call this Going Greek. We lose the sun in the back garden between 5pm-7.30pm, spring to summer, so sit in the front. I usually wear a cap, so I'm not able to see anyone and it gives me privacy. If husband fancies a beer out there, it has to be in a glass; no tins out the front. We're not THAT common! You will feel less self conscious the more you do it. People have given you some great ideas for the front garden and for the back, ear plugs AND noise cancelling headphones, give total silence. Who knows, your awful ndn may move one day.

daffodilandtulip · 24/04/2026 19:38

I want a bench now!

I want a bench now!

Do it 😀

littegi08 · 24/04/2026 19:43

Yes have done so during the pandemic. Noisy and very loud neighbours that kicked their ball at the fence all day despite living next door to a park. To be honest the weather is changing alot and getting hotter, and I would rather sit indoors with the aircon.

imbolic · 24/04/2026 19:52

We used to have a good neighbour years ago who did this - they lost the sun quite early in their back garden. In the summer he used to put a TV just inside his garage (with the doors open) so that the picture was clear and then settle down on his front driveway in a deckchair in the sunshine dressed in his swimming trunks with cans of beer and snacks to watch the cricket.

daffodilandtulip · 24/04/2026 21:40

I can assure you I won’t be doing it in swimwear

This is horrible - avoiding sitting in your back garden (which you own) because of these morons. Is this the life you want for yourself every day when it’s warm, for years? I really think you should move. Yes, you have the risk of the same thing happening again, but you do your due diligence before making the decision.

mondaytosunday · 24/04/2026 21:57

My friend front garden is where the sun is - it’s all paved basically it’s a driveway, and not a big one. She sits there no worries.

Oricolt · 24/04/2026 22:00

I often sit in the front. I follow the sun.

Hannaseed · 24/04/2026 22:03

We all use our front gardens to sit in. We are probably considered common by MN though.

BurntBroccoli · 24/04/2026 22:04

I feel you. It’s awful when your peace is disturbed.

I’ve noticed more people getting little benches for their front gardens, especially when they are are a sun trap in the evening sun.

Go for it I say!

daffodilandtulip · Yesterday 08:29

I had my first coffee outside in peace in the morning sun, but they’ve started now so I’m waiting for the sun to move around then moving my chair to the front 💃🏼

So Annoying but good to make the best of a rubbish situation until it changes…
I was just going to say a bench isn’t the most comfy if you are reading as you may have to lean on your car! 🚗
Maybe a foldaway chair thats light and easy to store and put up?

Myfridgeiscool · Yesterday 09:21

Get yourself a comfy chair and get out the front OP. Get a footstool too and get your feet up. Enjoy!

daffodilandtulip · Yesterday 16:15

I’ve just taken one of the garden chairs around for now. I’ve spent all afternoon in the glorious sunshine, IN COMPLETE SILENCE. I can just hear birds and summer. Bliss.

Where I live, the front doors of the older houses open straight onto street. The yards at the back at normally converted into kitchens and bathrooms. Everyone takes their chairs onto the street. It's lovely, but possibly not so good if you're introverted because a lot of people stop to chat!

daffodilandtulip · Yesterday 19:04

Haha love this! That would be so lovely to sit under. There isn’t enough non-window house walls for it to go against though 🤔

I have several areas in the garden that I have seating including a bench and small table at the front. It can get too hot in our south facing back garden during the day I summer so often sit round the front and read.
