When is "next Wednesday"?

Namingbaba · 24/04/2026 13:10

Today is Friday 24th April. If someone says "next Wednesday" to you, which Wednesday do they mean?

OP posts:
audhdandme · 24/04/2026 13:12

Wednesday next week

Villanousvillans · 24/04/2026 13:12

The one after next Tuesday. HTH.

ExquisitelyDressed · 24/04/2026 13:13

29th, but I’d say “next Wednesday the 29th” if it was at all important.

ThePeewit · 24/04/2026 13:13

It's in the next week, so the 29th.
If it were Monday 27th today then next Wednesday would be 6th May and 29th April would be "this Wednesday."

Turnitoffnonagain · 24/04/2026 13:13

Wednesday 29th. It's the next day which is a Wednesday.

Yes.

Yesitsmeimback · 24/04/2026 13:14

I think the confusion happens when its, say Tuesday and someone says next Wednesday as is it tomorrow (which is literally the next Wednesday) or the Wednesday of the following week.

TeenLifeMum · 24/04/2026 13:14

Wednesday 29th

if it was Monday then it’s in the same week and becomes “this Wednesday” and next Wednesday would be the following week, but we’ve already had “this” Wednesday this week.

Crunchymum · 24/04/2026 13:14

The next Wednesday to arrive. 29th.

If they are saying next Wednesday on Monday 27th or Tuesday 28th then I'd assume next Wednesday would mean the 6th May but I'd clarify. As people can be wild about this!

If in doubt then ask.

7238SM · 24/04/2026 13:16

I agree, saying it today (24th), I'd assume they meant 29th. It it was said say next Monday, I'd assume:
This Wed would mean 29th Apr
Next Wed would mean 6th May

Why do you ask OP?

UniversityofWarwick · 24/04/2026 13:16

I'd say the 29th no hesitation. But 'next Sunday' I'd take as the third as the 26th is 'this Sunday.' But not everyone agrees.

(Still remember telling a priest, who I'd met at an open day at school, that it would be a children's service the week he was visiting. It wasn't. He'd meant one thing and I'd taken it as another. Apparently his sermon went down really well! I came across him in a thread on FB about 25 years later and apologised 😂)

Yes this is a good way to look at it.

Although as it's Friday now, if someone said either this Wednesday or next Wednesday they would both mean the 29th to me !!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/04/2026 13:22

6th may.

Cantthinkofanewusernameffs · 24/04/2026 13:23

Next Wednesday is the 6th May.

The 29th April would be this Wednesday or on Wednesday.

CmonBobby · 24/04/2026 13:25

It’s a Friday so if someone said “next Wednesday” I’d say “this Wednesday or next Wednesday?” and their answer would tell me. That rule holds until Monday at which point Next Wednesday would be the 6th May without clarification needed.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 24/04/2026 13:26

This week is the week we are on next week is the week starting either Sunday or Monday depending how people count. Today being Friday next Wednesday is the Wednesday belonging to next week so the 29th

I disagree. This Wednesday has already passed - the Wednesday that belongs to this week. Next Wednesday is the one belonging to the next calendar week.

ImWearingPantaloons · 24/04/2026 13:28

6th May.

On the 24th April, the 29th will be ‘this’ Wednesday ie ‘this coming Wednesday’

Also agree with this!

Next Wednesday is the 29th April but only because it’s in another week. If we were speaking on Monday it would be ‘this Wednesday’ and ‘next Weds’ would be the 6th May!

Similarly, 2-3 May is ‘next weekend’. 25-26 April is ‘this weekend’.

Always best to include the date on anything formal tbh

Kpo58 · 24/04/2026 13:37

I personally only use Next Wednesday if it is currently Wednesday and I'm talking about the Wednesday next week.

Otherwise I just say on Wednesday (if it's Thurs-Tues) talking about the first Wednesday that's coming up or the Wednesday after if refering to the one after that.
