Today is Friday 24th April. If someone says "next Wednesday" to you, which Wednesday do they mean?

This is how my husband explained it but I’m with the majority in thinking “next” is used to mean the literal next day that is Wednesday. I guess the confusion is that often people say things like “this Wednesday and next” so some people link “next” with the one after.

Anyway glad to be vindicated by the poll 😂. Although I see even with those saying next Wednesday is in April there’s still some difference in explanation and if I asked this on Monday there would be more of a spilt.

I agree it’s best to always clarify. It just came about as I was asked about a delivery and I said “next Wednesday” and the confusion started 😂

I think it depends on what point of the week you're at.

If it's a Monday and someone is referring to the following Friday, then for me thats "this Friday", because it's part of the same week.

But if it's Thursday and someone refers to the following Monday, then that's "next Monday" for me, because it's part of next week.

Same number of days away, but part of a different week, so "next" rather than "this". Weekend days would always be "this", because they're tacked onto the week for me. Got no time for these "The week starts on a Sunday" people.

To be 'next' Wednesday there has to be a weekend between then and now. If there isn't it is 'this' Wednesday. If there are multiple weekends between then and now it is Wednesday the (date). However I discovered when organising meetings that if there is any sliver of a possibility of misunderstanding at least one attendee would find it so would always be very explicit and include the actual date. Nevertheless someone would always turn up on the wrong day and/or in the wrong place.

100% 5 days later, (29th April.) It's saying Wednesday next week, NOT Wednesday the week after next!

I booked someone to come to our house once (on a Tuesday) and I booked them to come 'next Thursday' and they turned up 2 days later (when we weren't in, and were an hour away!) They got really disgruntled, and said it was obviously 2 days after. I said 'no, we said next Thursday, not this Thursday, NEXT Thursday - 9 days away from when we booked you!' They never came back again!

People who think next Wednesday is 12 days away (when you book them on a Friday) are very likely the same people who think the new Millenium started on 1st January 2001! 😬

The third millennium did start in 2001. The first 1000 years was 1 - 1000, then 1001-2000, then 2001 onwards. Otherwise the first millennium only had 999 years (ignoring the change of calendar and uncertainty when Jesus was born).
