Today is Friday 24th April. If someone says "next Wednesday" to you, which Wednesday do they mean?

Oh my god, I have this issue so many times with my MIL and have also considered raising this question. Interested to see the outcome

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 24/04/2026 13:47

This is a constant subject of debate in both the Grumpy household and in my workplace.
There is no right answer (except anyone disagreeing with me on this is wrong 🤣).
Next Wednesday is the 29th. A week on Wednesday is the 6th.
If we were having this conversation next Monday (i.e. the 27th April) I would refer just to 'Wednesday' meaning the 29th but the 6th would still be a week on Wednesday.
My adult children disagree with me, what do they know?

AprilMizzel · 24/04/2026 13:53

Wednesday 29th.

Though as PP says if I was told this on a Tuesday I'd have to clatfiy if they meant tommorow or Wednesday after.

Though I've had issues on Sunday with DH thinking next weekend being further than 7 days away - seeing Sunday as part of the same week as the coming Saturday or least I think that was the issue - I was left very confused.

ButterYellowHair · 24/04/2026 13:27

I disagree. This Wednesday has already passed - the Wednesday that belongs to this week. Next Wednesday is the one belonging to the next calendar week.

Interesting! I hadn't thought of "this Wednesday" being the Wednesday just gone. You're right, of course, but the context would make it clear whether you meant the other day or 29th. "This Wednesday I met Jane for coffee" makes it obvious you're talking about the past. But I'd be more likely to say "On Wednesday I met... "

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 24/04/2026 13:53

Next Wednesday is the next one to arrive for most British speakers - I’ve lived in various parts of the UK, it would always mean the next one to arrive, so from today it would be 29th.

6th May is “a week on Wednesday” or “the Wednesday after next”. (Because “next” =29th, so “Wednesday after next” = 6th)

Be interesting if all those saying 6th are from the same area.

TeenLifeMum · 24/04/2026 13:14

Wednesday 29th

if it was Monday then it’s in the same week and becomes “this Wednesday” and next Wednesday would be the following week, but we’ve already had “this” Wednesday this week.

This is the correct answer.

TheyGrewUp · 24/04/2026 13:55

Next Wednesday is 29th April. A week next Wednesday is 6th May.

springhyacinths · 24/04/2026 13:56

By "next Wednesday" they mean the next Wednesday. If they meant May 6th, they should say, "Wednesday week" - which means the Wednesday of the following week - but I think people have forgotten this nomenclature.

Alicorn1707 · 24/04/2026 13:57

Each new week commences on a Sunday, always.

This week began on Sunday, w/c 19th of April, therefore this Wednesday was the 22nd and has passed.

Next week commences w/c 26th April therefore, next Wednesday is 29th April.

All of you "May" sayers, only time and truth will tell 😉😊

Crunchymum · 24/04/2026 13:17

Yes this is a good way to look at it.

Although as it's Friday now, if someone said either this Wednesday or next Wednesday they would both mean the 29th to me !!

Exactly!!

Yes, I think it just pays to clarify & not assume.

Empress13 · 24/04/2026 14:00

29th obvs to those voting May please explain ???

DogsLoveSwimming · 24/04/2026 14:00

ThePeewit · 24/04/2026 13:13

It's in the next week, so the 29th.
If it were Monday 27th today then next Wednesday would be 6th May and 29th April would be "this Wednesday."

Edited

This.

29th is ‘this’ or ‘the coming’ Wednesday. Next Wednesday is the one after.

This is how I would see it.

Each new week commences on a Sunday, always.

I've always taken new week to start Monday - with Sunday being last day of the week not the first. Think that's due to School and work though.

Solomon Grundy was born on a Monday - and burried on a Sunday - not sure if that means I'm not alone in thinking Monday first day of the week.

Alicorn1707 · 24/04/2026 14:10

@AprilMizzel that's very interesting.

Further research shows that indeed for some it's Sunday and others Monday.

TiL, according to 😊

Evenly Split
Whether the Gregorian calendar shows Sunday or Monday as the first day of the week depends on where you live. Most countries start the week on Monday, but most people start on Sunday:

  • 67 countries and over 4 billion people start the week on Sunday
  • 160 countries and roughly 3.3 billion people start on Monday
  • In terms of population, it is almost 50/50: Half the world’s population begins on Sunday

Wednesday of this week has still passed though, next Wednesday is 29th April 😄

100% 5 days later, (29th April.) It's saying Wednesday next week, NOT Wednesday the week after next!

I booked someone to come to our house once (on a Tuesday) and I booked them to come 'next Thursday' and they turned up 2 days later (when we weren't in, and were an hour away!) They got really disgruntled, and said it was obviously 2 days after. I said 'no, we said next Thursday, not this Thursday, NEXT Thursday - 9 days away from when we booked you!' They never came back again!

People who think next Wednesday is 12 days away (when you book them on a Friday) are very likely the same people who think the new Millenium started on 1st January 2001! 😬

Wednesday 29th 😁
If it is only 2-3 days before, then I’d say next Wednesday becomes the following week as distinct from the one that is imminently about to dawn.

WorriedRelative · 24/04/2026 14:22

It is the Wednesday after "this Wednesday"

Paganpentacle · 24/04/2026 14:27

Yesitsmeimback · 24/04/2026 13:14

I think the confusion happens when its, say Tuesday and someone says next Wednesday as is it tomorrow (which is literally the next Wednesday) or the Wednesday of the following week.

SO here we have 'this wednesday' ie tomorrow.
vs 'next wednesday'' -ie the one next week.

I suspect this maybe where DH and I differ and this had confusion on weekends.

I agree with 29th though.

I do automtically tend to check dates with phrases like this with person in question - I always have not becuase I've ever had communictaion problems - I don't get how it's not the 29th with next there - but becasue I like things as clear as possible.

bugalugs45 · 24/04/2026 14:45

Wednesday 29th,
if you said next Wednesday on a Tuesday I’d query it as should be tomorrow and if said on a Sunday / Monday I’d say this Wednesday ( coming )

I agree with this.

user2848502016 · 24/04/2026 14:52

I’d actually just say “Wednesday” if I meant Apr 29th, and “Wednesday after next” for 6th May.
From Sunday onwards “next Wednesday”
would be 6th May

Namingbaba · 24/04/2026 15:01

ineousa · 24/04/2026 14:01

29th is ‘this’ or ‘the coming’ Wednesday. Next Wednesday is the one after.

This is how my husband explained it but I’m with the majority in thinking “next” is used to mean the literal next day that is Wednesday. I guess the confusion is that often people say things like “this Wednesday and next” so some people link “next” with the one after.

Anyway glad to be vindicated by the poll 😂. Although I see even with those saying next Wednesday is in April there’s still some difference in explanation and if I asked this on Monday there would be more of a spilt.

I agree it’s best to always clarify. It just came about as I was asked about a delivery and I said “next Wednesday” and the confusion started 😂
