Do some people genuinely not notice their own lines and wrinkles?

Just read on another thread a woman claiming to be mid 40s or older with not a single wrinkle and using no skincare other than a cheap £1 moisturiser. Hey I can’t see her but so many times I’ve had people say this to me in person, how they don’t have any wrinkles and yet I’m looking at their face and yes, yes they absolutely do!

Now I don’t mind lines and wrinkles I have a few myself but what is going on! Why do so many people, even those who are quite heavily lined and sun damaged insist that they haven’t any lines and everyone is shocked to hear they are a day over 21? Do other people have magic mirrors? Or perhaps there is an epidemic of untreated long sightedness?

Sorry, yes was just agreeing with you. I was still getting ID’d in supermarkets in my late 30s. 😁. I’m sure some here would say I was making that up. 🤷🏻‍♀️.

My cousin gets ID’d, it’s more to do with her stature & clothes then face.

VivienneDelacroix · 22/04/2026 16:53

I think they're probably in a better mindset than those of us who can only focus on the signs of aging when we look in the mirror.
I wish I had that instead of looking in the mirror and pulling my skin back.

Pasta4Dinner · 22/04/2026 16:53

Maybe they only see filtered photos of themselves. I know someone from school who is always going on about other peoples weight and how very slim she is (she actually lost her best friend over this behaviour). Thing is, she’s not that slim. She’s a 12/14. She does share very curated photos of herself where she looks slimmer so I assume she just believes them.

But this poster was responding to me about EDS and the impact on skin, is your cousin hyper mobile?

Personally, when I was ID'd recently it was after work and I work in a corporate environment so I don't think it was clothes, I am not a child like stature either.

Not with wrinkles, but yes, I do know a couple of people who think they are slimmer than they are and are a bit smug about people they think are fatter. I always think "you're about the same size"! I do think filters maybe come into it.

I've never in my life met anyone who says what the op describes. I am also yet to meet anyone who really looks anything other than their age, (or thereabouts). I have met people who look great 'for their age' but they do not look, for example, 21 when they are 35 or 30 when they are 50.

That said, I definitely can see wrinkles coming if we are discussing the lines when you smile.

Maybe they are not wearing their reading glasses when they look in the mirror. I had a horrible realisation in Specsavers when I looked in the mirror with my new reading glasses to see if they suited me.

that reminds me of scene in Modern family when Gloria won't admit she needs glasses. When she finally puts a pair on, she does a shock double take at Jay.

That was me. I genuinely don't have wrinkles. I have very oily skin which presumably keeps my skin from drying out making wrinkles visible. If you Google it, it is a thing. I do have some grey hair coming through so I'm not totally oblivious to my flaws.

Similar to me - some fine lines but definitely no wrinkles. I also have a fat face. Which is annoying but it does make me look younger!

However, I have eye bags. Wrinkles might be preferable TBH.

Genetics play a big part as well, I was 49 yesterday and genuinely have only laughter and frown lines, I am noticing slight lack of firmness in my skin but nothing a bit of cream, collagen supplements and being healthy won't combat, why worry about others though, it will only eat away at you, I know someone who worries so much about what others are doing and negative that she doesnt shine she just looks bitter and that can actually be very ageing in itself

TheTealCat · 22/04/2026 17:05

Because I have a high level of natural sun protection (ie Melanin!) and oily skin

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 22/04/2026 17:07

I hate to say it and be the one to burst bubbles but the “I always get IDed” thing… sometimes we just do it to make people feel good, sometimes I used to do it to try and get a tip, sometimes I used to do it because someone was snippy or rude and I didn’t want to serve them. Where DH was behind the bar he always used to get great tips off middle aged woman and it’s because he would put “the moves” on them by ID’ing them and saying “wow I genuinely thought you were my age” or something. Corny as fuck but it helped us pay the bills.

It happened to me two weeks ago when I was definitely looking over 25 and I knew what he was doing… still made me smile though and I did tip.

GarlicFind · 22/04/2026 17:12

I'm an EXTREMELY raddled 70-year-old. My 66-year-old sister has a few - very few - fine lines, much like the ones I developed in my late forties.

I had a permanent tan for about 25 years. This was a conscious choice to look and feel glowing through mid-life; couldn't see much wrong with looking old when I am old. Sis made the opposite decision. We each got what we expected, both reasonably happy with our outcomes.

Also agree with the eyesight comments, though - I had a terrible shock when I got contact lenses at 35 😂

I agree, what does it matter if someone thinks they’ve no wrinkles or fat is youthful , no one needs to burst their bubble and self confidence is fantastic , let them crack on. I guess rhe issue is if they run around and tell everyone.thays what they think, most people will agree reassuringly , like when you guess someone’s age, you aim young, or declare no you don’t look fat in that, you carry it well,

everyone deludes themselves on something , be it I’m great ar my job and it’s just the bosses are all wankers, to no my husband doesn’t watch porn or look at other women, to I only eat 1200 cals a day honest, or being fat knocks years off me, happy wealthy attractive people must secretly be miserable, whatever makes folks happy to think let them.

Is that why the supermarket staff were IDing me? Hoping for a bigger tip?

This is totally me! I look in the mirror when I'm ready for a day or night out and am generally happy - looking good, nice outfit, hair done, make up done and looking/feeling relatively youthful etc.

Then I see the photos .....

I just tell myself that people see me as I see myself - the camera just tells LIES!

There's quite a bit of truth in that. Photos freeze one split-second of a face and body that's constantly in motion, conveying personality and expression. You must've noticed how often, when you pause a video, the gorgeous character on screen appears gormless, eyes half-closed, mouth stretched, lines and creases in unexpected places!

That just shows that even beautiful people look pretty fucking shit most of the time 😂 It's what we DO with our faces that matters!

JulietteHasAGun · 22/04/2026 17:32

Ok so no make up, no filter and I’m smiling. I don’t profess to be any beauty at all, I’m a total scruff bucket. My skin isn’t great. I’m not bothered about my looks. I don’t go round saying I have no wrinkles. My eyesight is 20/20 vision. Maybe a slight line by my eyes if I really look hard on the zoomed in photo but nothing I notice day to day. And I wouldn’t call it a wrinkle.

Do some people genuinely not notice their own lines and wrinkles?

Backawayfromthesausage · 22/04/2026 17:40

This is mine mid fifties if I hold my face static. when I smile or move my face it’s the same as anyone else’s, crows feet and forehead lines.

I was in Waitrose on the self service till, he was a student about 19 I have DC that age, he wasn't bothered in the slightest about any of these things and I don't see how I could have pissed him off I was serving myself. I mean I would say that it was probably the lighting etc . but I think is due to Hyper mobility

willowstar · 22/04/2026 17:47

I know a woman like this at work. Tells me she gets mistaken for being much younger than her age, which is same as me, 52. I love her confidence but to me she looks like a 52 year old woman. In her head she doesn't. Who knows but she is happy and it doesn't really matter.

No but sometimes if they don’t like your tone they ID. Or just to be nice. DN is working at Tesco at the moment and she IDs people who are rude or snippy. When you have a shitty job and someone makes it worse it’s nice to “get them back” even if it’s just a mild inconvenience.
Also if you’ve had a mystery shopper in and someone has failed (even tho some of the mystery shoppers do NOT look under 25) you just ID everyone who’s not got a blue rinse to be safe because you get bollocked or sacked if you don’t ID a mystery shopper.

Well I’m always lovely to shop staff so it can’t be the first reason 😁. I get the mystery shopper fear though.

No I can’t. 😁. I am a mix of supremely confident and equally not bothered about my looks

I find it odd that someone can be so bothered about other people’s looks/perception of their looks that this is even a thought for someone. Never mind start a thread on it. Really funny. People need to occupy their time better 😁
