Do some people genuinely not notice their own lines and wrinkles?

Just read on another thread a woman claiming to be mid 40s or older with not a single wrinkle and using no skincare other than a cheap £1 moisturiser. Hey I can’t see her but so many times I’ve had people say this to me in person, how they don’t have any wrinkles and yet I’m looking at their face and yes, yes they absolutely do!

Now I don’t mind lines and wrinkles I have a few myself but what is going on! Why do so many people, even those who are quite heavily lined and sun damaged insist that they haven’t any lines and everyone is shocked to hear they are a day over 21? Do other people have magic mirrors? Or perhaps there is an epidemic of untreated long sightedness?

Reading glasses are a killer but then they do magnify everything so I take comfort in the fact that on the odd occasion I look at myself in the mirror with them on I'm seeing the wrinkles 2.5 times closer!

AzureFinch · 22/04/2026 19:35

My mam is 65 and looks 50, she's a total Tom boy and doesn't even own a £1 moisturiser lol

Madarch · 22/04/2026 19:56

Failing eyesight while you are aging is a blessing. I still look 30 without glasses 😂

Until I was 40 I didn't have any lines on my face at all - I got asked for ID all the time and it wasn't unusual for people who came to the door to ask if my mum or dad was in. I hated it. My family do all look young, but it was because I was obese - the extra fat not only stopped me having wrinkles, it actively gave me a baby face. I didn't look good, just young. I've lost 5st just calorie counting in the last two years, and now look much older, even though I also look healthier - the difference is astounding. Without the fat pads under my eyes I have dark circles and I do have fine wrinkles on my forehead and under my eyes. However I still look young - probably early 30s (I've been asked for ID twice this week because of Challenge 25 rules). People I have worked with for 12 years comment on it at birthdays etc, and not to flatter (i.e. when I spoke to someone senior about a raise she said dismissively I was very early career to be where I was so it wasn't a realistic expectation and was shocked that I had 20 years experience). I don't use fancy skincare, just lucky and prob still have the benefit of excess fat in my face plus I absolutely hate the sun so I have no sun damage, though I went very very grey haired in my late 20s so if I stop dying it'll be a different story! Is not like it matters though - my best friend is much, much more attractive than me and has far more lines, and I look much better now than I did when I was smoother faced. A blank puffy face can look very young but so what? Young does not mean better.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 22/04/2026 20:30

My family have some "fountain of youth" genes knocking around. We're also very pale, so tend to use a bucket of suncream all year around.

I have two fine lines on my forehead (variably visible by lighting and moisture levels, have had them since my teens), and a little crinkle in my top lip. I'm prone to dark circles, and my skin can look dull and tired often.

But at 37, I'm noticeably less wrinkled than my friends.

If it helps, I eschew caffeine and mostly alcohol, so they're probably having more fun.

Meow...catty much?!

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 22/04/2026 20:44

I used to feel quite frustrated by the fact my mother didn’t seem to notice her crazy long white eyebrows or moustache or chin hairs or mascara blobbed all over her eyelids and lipstick all around her mouth. She also used to declare she had no wrinkles and looked 20 years younger!

Now I’m old and have terrible vision too I realise why! I’m just glad I invested in a magnifying illuminated mirror that I use daily to give myself a once over! 🤣🤣🤣

Backawayfromthesausage · 22/04/2026 20:58

I do find it odd, as I think everyone looks five years either way of their age, and body composition can impact that, as in slim and toned is youthful, and condition of hair, full, thick is more youthful , clear healthy skin, is more youthful, but still even with some tweakments, people look within five years of their age. I guess it’s about looking healthy and fit.

i am quite a mix of bemused and impressed by the amount of women who think they look very young and wrinkle free, and especially those who think they look young just as they are fat.

it’s an impressive level of self confidence, more power to you, that’s what I say,

I was cursed with both very oily skin as a teenager and now extremely dry skin in middle age!

Ooof …. that is unlucky!

I don't know.

My husband is 58 and genuinely doesn't have a single wrinkle.

I suspect it's his Spanish genes as his mother only has a couple and she's nearly 80.

That must be a “them” gene. Older people in spain have wrinkles like anywhere else. Some a lot more from sun exposure.

cheesepasties · Yesterday 07:36

Some people definitely have fewer wrinkles but no one is immune to the sagging effect - eyelids, jowls etc - it’s just gravity (unless you have a facelift of course) My mum is one of those people who at almost 80 swears she has no wrinkles - she is overweight and I think that helps ‘pad’ her skin out a bit but she 100% still looks 80 because her skin sags - as it would do after 8 decades! She is a bit delusional generally though so I don’t bother saying anything when she said ‘oh I don’t have any wrinkles’ and peers at my skin as if its a crinkled old boot…

Delatron · Yesterday 09:55

To be fair jowling and sagging is far more ageing than a few lines and wrinkles. And much harder to address.

Cheesenotcheesecake · Yesterday 10:12

I am nearly 46. I look, in my opinion, nearly 46. During a work chat last week two colleagues were genuinely shocked to hear that as I look 37 (weirdly specific I thought, but basically, 5 years old than them). They might be right there's a huge spread of looks around 40.
I have aged, my skin elasticity is going, but I really don't have more than a few very, very fine lines around my crows feet area and a loss of fullness under my eyes.
I do notice because I started seeing them appear a couple of years ago, so I upped my skincare from the occasional dab or Nivea soft to retinol and vit c.
I haven't ever met anyone who is wrinkled and thinks they aren't. I have met plenty who filter heavily.

@stetha

I am 45 and I am sorry but I do not have any lines and wrinkles at all. And I use £1.99 Simple moisturiser - have no skin care routine to speak of.

I have zero sun damage.

My mother, my grandmothers on both sides - same - aged exceedingly well.

Some people just do not age in the same way.

Yeah, sure.
Pictures or it didn't happen.

Oh I’m definitely noticing some under chin sagging.

Are you mentally challenged?

Why would i send a pic of myself to prove my skin condition to a random?

Are you ok?

I genuinely do not have wrinkles on my face - that is the question that was asked.

Just because you are wrinkling at a pace that is alarming you does not mean you should post such rude posts.

The saying “black doesn’t crack”
is a common saying for a reason.

You say you don't have wrinkles but you could look like a raisin for all we know. It seems vanishingly unlikely to me that anyone 40+ wouldn't have wrinkles when they smile or frown. People can be self deluding, but who cares? If it makes you happy, crack on.

Likewise if it makes you happy to sneer and not believe it then crack on.

So does this thread require everyone to post photos? Where is yours then?

I do not have wrinkles and i answered the question honestly - i referenced my mum and grandma to show that
sometimes it’s just genetics.

Go and buy some anti ageing cream if that makes you feel better about yourself.

Prisonbreak · Yesterday 12:47

I’m almost 40 and while I have many flaws, my skin isn’t one of them. I genuinely have beautiful skin and never had any Botox or fillers. Not against them, just never had them. Let people be comfortable with themselves

I think th4 issue is no one has ever encountered a naturally wrinkle free woman in their forties or fifties, no such thing has been witnessed ever, and we have so many people claiming they are wrinkle free, with beautiful skin, or looking much younger as they are fat. It’s not something most of us have ever seen, hence why it is met with some sceptism, as you’d think it would be common place .

however my view is is if people believe this then good for them,

EnterQueene · Yesterday 12:57

People can have beautiful skin and still have wrinkles. Wrinkles aren't flaws, they are the inevitable result of getting older and we all have them. Apart from the posters who claim they don't, whom no one has every actually seen. I guess they go to a different school so we wouldn't know them Grin

Given that venom you're spewing at a stranger on a lighthearted thread, I would say I'm not the one who is not okay.

OK i am sorry to take this there but “no such thing has been witnessed”

what is your basis for this fact?
what is your demographic reference point?

I dont want to make this racial but MANY African women do not have any wrinkles at my age (45) and I am one of them.

The world is not confined to your limited experience.
