Do some people genuinely not notice their own lines and wrinkles?

Just read on another thread a woman claiming to be mid 40s or older with not a single wrinkle and using no skincare other than a cheap £1 moisturiser. Hey I can’t see her but so many times I’ve had people say this to me in person, how they don’t have any wrinkles and yet I’m looking at their face and yes, yes they absolutely do!

Now I don’t mind lines and wrinkles I have a few myself but what is going on! Why do so many people, even those who are quite heavily lined and sun damaged insist that they haven’t any lines and everyone is shocked to hear they are a day over 21? Do other people have magic mirrors? Or perhaps there is an epidemic of untreated long sightedness?

Perhaps, because lines and wrinkles are not important

stetha · 22/04/2026 09:45

@BrightLightTonight Well then why do they go around insisting to everyone that they don’t have any?

I think you need to consider why this bothers you so much.
If someone feels confident in their skin, then good for them I say!

I've never heard anyone going round discussing the presence or absence of wrinkles, so I'm guessing that this isn't 'people' but actually one person in particular.

Kokonimater · 22/04/2026 09:49

Maybe they are not wearing their reading glasses when they look in the mirror. I had a horrible realisation in Specsavers when I looked in the mirror with my new reading glasses to see if they suited me.

henlake7 · 22/04/2026 09:49

Some people are heavily in denial. Others maybe think the filter version of them is real!?
Im more then happy to just look good for my age, I really dont need to look younger or wrinkle free!

Moveoverdarlin · 22/04/2026 09:51

I don’t know any women like this. Everyone I know is very disparaging about themselves and is critical of the most minor imperfections.

mondaytosunday · 22/04/2026 09:52

So many people? I know a fair few people, and we are mostly late 50s/60s. Never heard one of them say they don’t have wrinkles…. Who you hanging out with?!

HotChocolateBubbleBath · 22/04/2026 09:53

I’m 59 and don’t have a single line or wrinkle, not one, I look 25… Tra La La, leave me be!

mjf981 · 22/04/2026 09:54

I think some of it is lighting. In the bathroom at my old apartment I looked absolutely shocking, to the point that I hated looking in the mirror. I swear the only place I look worse is at the hairdressers. However in the lighting at my partner's bathroom - with no big windows and soft back lighting - I look like a million times better and my skin does too.

I actually think having good bathroom lighting (in the right way) is one of the best things you can do for your self esteem! 😂

frozendaisy · 22/04/2026 09:54

Some people don't
H's mum is in her 80s, spent much time in the sun, fewer wrinkles than wrinklie me (50s very little time in sun slathered in 50+ sun cream)
H is similar - smooth in his 50s! with I can assure you very little thought or input to his wrinkles

I don't pay much attention to my wrinkles but I don't say I am wrinkle free because I am not. But some people truly are it's fascinating.

Sonolanona · 22/04/2026 09:56

They haven't discovered reading glasses yet?😆
Seriously I'm nearly 60 as are most of my friends and I can honestly say we have never had a conversation about our wrinkles or lack of.
I do have a neighbour of similar age who likes to mention that she is still blonde and never had highlights and has no grey (conversation came about when I ditched the dye and went grey) . She absolutely has loads of grey hair now...she just calls it blonde! I guess it's a self preservation thing!

Arsewype · 22/04/2026 09:56

It might that in photos their wrinkles don’t show up, whereas when you are talking to somone you see the natural movement of their face and see them.

I’m early 40’s and don’t have many static wrinkles in photos, however when I smile or talk animatedly I’m sure there are smile lines etc. which is normal at my age.

I would never discuss this in real life with people, it seems odd to me that people would blurt out that they have no wrinkles in conversation.

ARKane · 22/04/2026 10:04

Why are there so many people with no wrinkles, who look decades younger than their actual age on this anonymous forum where nobody can see them and hardly anyone (if anyone at all) is like this IRL? Hmm, It’s a real head scratcher…🤔🙃

CointreauVersial · 22/04/2026 10:05

I think, when you see your own face in the mirror every day, you don't really notice the flaws. I have developed quite a big sun spot/freckle on the side of my cheek, and it took me ages to notice it, even though it must be quite obvious to everyone else.

Lelot · 22/04/2026 10:07

Oh I don't have any mirrors so I don't have much idea what I look like day to day. Very restful!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 22/04/2026 10:09

Well the eyesight goes around the same time as the wrinkles develop. I assume they can’t see them.

Cricketashes · 22/04/2026 10:10

That was me. I genuinely don't have wrinkles. I have very oily skin which presumably keeps my skin from drying out making wrinkles visible. If you Google it, it is a thing. I do have some grey hair coming through so I'm not totally oblivious to my flaws.

GameOfJones · 22/04/2026 10:11

I don't get it either. You see it on here all the time.....women saying they're in their 40s or 50s and don't have any lines. That's the age bracket of most of my friends and I've never met a person man or woman of that age that has no fine lines at all..... including my friends that have botox!

I think perhaps you just don't notice it yourself when you look in the mirror every day..... potentially without your glasses on 🤣. When your face is moving and you're talking to other people it's much more noticeable. It's also completely fine....lines and wrinkles are normal. But I agree the complete denial of them is odd!

mindutopia · 22/04/2026 10:13

I honestly don’t know if I have lines and wrinkles. I mean I’m 45. I probably do. I truly don’t sit in front of the mirror picking apart and criticising my appearance. I do moisturise. I wouldn’t say I have a ‘skin care routine’ of any sort though. But I am absolutely fanatical about sun protection and do wear a high quality SPF 50. I have truly never pondered if I have any wrinkles yet. 🤷🏻‍♀️

LittleMissClutter · 22/04/2026 10:15

I don't know.

My husband is 58 and genuinely doesn't have a single wrinkle.

I suspect it's his Spanish genes as his mother only has a couple and she's nearly 80.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 22/04/2026 10:15

I’m 26 so I don’t really have many but I know that’s because I’m in my 20s… it’ll happen, probably soonish. My sister is kind of weird though, she’s like… waiting for me to get them. Last week she was like “ohh is that a smile line I see?” And maybe… I think my skin was just dehydrated, but it’s not something I look out for. I think when you see your face everyday you’re less likely to notice.

Lobelia123 · 22/04/2026 10:18

I love lines and wrinkles, they start to add beauty to the rather bland canvas of your youthful face! Its sagging and loss of volume that are not so appealing. So when I say I want to look youthful or good for my age, I dont mean I want to look unlined or unwrinkled - I actually like the lines around my eyes and mouth!

CointreauVersial · 22/04/2026 10:18

I don't think my skin is "AMAZING" for my age, but it's not bad. I definitely see people my age with far worse wrinkles. My DSis is on WLI, and blimey, doesn't it show in her face....

TealSapphire · 22/04/2026 10:18

I think it's because we all have an image of ourselves in our head. Usually the best version. The mirror brings us back to earth though 😅

There was a poster on another thread, who's in her 50's but said said she looks like she's 20 something. Um, no. Even celebrities with plastic surgeries under their belt still look their age, just a more smoother complexion.
