Do some people genuinely not notice their own lines and wrinkles?

Just read on another thread a woman claiming to be mid 40s or older with not a single wrinkle and using no skincare other than a cheap £1 moisturiser. Hey I can’t see her but so many times I’ve had people say this to me in person, how they don’t have any wrinkles and yet I’m looking at their face and yes, yes they absolutely do!

Now I don’t mind lines and wrinkles I have a few myself but what is going on! Why do so many people, even those who are quite heavily lined and sun damaged insist that they haven’t any lines and everyone is shocked to hear they are a day over 21? Do other people have magic mirrors? Or perhaps there is an epidemic of untreated long sightedness?

This isn’t a phenomenon I’ve ever come across and given all my friends are, like me, mid 40s- mid 50s I can only conclude that it isn’t at all common and is more about the people you know, OP. That being said, we rarely if ever discuss wrinkles because who cares?!

I went to the opticians last week, and seeing my neck in one of their mirrors nearly had me in tears. I went online that night and ordered a shed load of cleansing/moisturizer for mature skin Grin my mirrors at home clearly didn't get my neck at the right angle. I'm 55 and have never ever used anything on my skin other than hot water.

Cleanser and moisturiser will do nothing for wrinkles. You need SPF and retinol.

I love lines and wrinkles, they start to add beauty to the rather bland canvas of your youthful face! Its sagging and loss of volume that are not so appealing. So when I say I want to look youthful or good for my age, I dont mean I want to look unlined or unwrinkled - I actually like the lines around my eyes and mouth!

I'm the same, I really like my 63 yr old face - wrinkles and all. It shows my character and the life I've lived, and I don't see my lines or grey hairs as "flaws" as referred to by someone upthread.

It is a Mumsnet trope to claim you/your elderly mother has no wrinkles. It isn't something I've ever heard claimed in real life - because in real life you can obviously see it is a total lie. I think quite a lot of Mumsnet posters like lying - possibly even to themselves.

Such a goady post

@BrightLightTonight Well then why do they go around insisting to everyone that they don’t have any?

I didn't have lines or wrinkles in my mid 40s i think we have become pre occupied by normal looking faces.and skin texture as an issue to be irraticated before you are 40.

Eta im 55 and you will be pleased to know I have lines and wrinkles.

butterpuffed · 22/04/2026 10:59

I've never heard anyone mention that they don't have wrinkles , so how does the conversation go ?

Hi, I'm Janice
Hi too, I'm Mary and I don't have wrinkles
You do, I can see them from here. Luckily, I don't .
Yes you do.

Gettingbysomehow · 22/04/2026 10:59

I look great in .y mirror at home. Its in the shade but at the hairdressers its a WTF situation. I look bloody awful.

Kingdomofsleep · 22/04/2026 11:00

I think you need to examine why you feel annoyed about this, like a pp said.

I'm mid 30s and about 10y ago I got this realisation that I actually dgaf what I look like most of the time. I cba with make up or any other faff, yes I have slight wrinkles. I look adequate, as we all do, and when did adequate become inadequate?!

The only thing I care about is being healthy and fit, including a healthy weight, toned abs, good posture, that's all you need. If you're healthy you'll always look OK imo.

I don't envy anyone their looks because I'm me and they're them, and I wouldn't want to be them, I want to be me. That's it

It’s only on Mumsnet and online. Even people in their 20s can have fine lines. So 40s/50s you’re definitely going to have some fine ones even if you have to look close up. It’s delusion mainly.

And probably something to do with the definition of ‘lines and wrinkles’. Not necessarily meaning deep set static ones.

I’m yet to meet at 45 plus person in real life with zero lines and wrinkles. Even with Botox…

Swissrailways · 22/04/2026 11:01

Nothing wrong with wrinkles! I've been watching The Pitt and Noah Wyle has lots of lines around his eyes, he just looks like a man who smiles a lot and I like that.
I have none on my forehead, I think due to a lifelong fringe. I cannot say the same for my lower face...

This is also true…

I have no wrinkles and I'm in my 50's. Don't wear glasses to look in the mirror!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 22/04/2026 11:03

I don’t have that many wrinkles. Yes sagging in jaw, minor 11s and other stuff. But I don’t believe in plastic surgery and procedures for me. I use retinol and a good spf but that’s mostly it. Quite a clean skincare routine. Works for me.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 22/04/2026 11:04

I’m 54.

VivaciousCurrentBun · 22/04/2026 11:04

Are you going to post a photo?

Applecup · 22/04/2026 11:06

Isn’t it great when people feel so confident in how they look that they don’t notice their wrinkles or lines. Unlike you, who seem to be obsessed by the subject.

5128gap · 22/04/2026 11:06

When I look in my bathroom mirror with the light behind me and my 'mirror face' on, I look 35.
In the daylight, pulling my usual expressions I look every day of my 56 years. I know this because I'm vain and check out my reflection a lot. However if I relied on my mirror I could easily believe I was line free.
Tbf, I know a few women my age who have negligible lines in repose especially those with darker skin so I don't think they're all deluded.

Never noticed any lines or wrinkles just sagging. I’ve just taken this photo in the harsh light of day and, yep, lots of lines! 🤣 I’m 70 and hiding the mirror from now on

Do some people genuinely not notice their own lines and wrinkles?
EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 22/04/2026 11:14

If you werent showing any signs of ageing at 70 then you’d be in a lab having your DNA tested for being an alien life form.

Reasonstobelieve · 22/04/2026 11:16

wishingonastar101 · 22/04/2026 10:49

I have an asian friend who is 50 and he does not have a single line or wrinkle. Different skin.
Wild to think but people are different.

Definitately something about Asian type skin, many with a vey youthful appearance well past menopause so yes you can be wrinkle free at this stage of life.

Reasonstobelieve · 22/04/2026 11:18

ARKane · 22/04/2026 10:04

Why are there so many people with no wrinkles, who look decades younger than their actual age on this anonymous forum where nobody can see them and hardly anyone (if anyone at all) is like this IRL? Hmm, It’s a real head scratcher…🤔🙃

Genetic

Delatron · 22/04/2026 11:20

It’s fine not to notice them or be happy with them. But claiming to have no lines or wrinkles at 50 plus is the issue when it’s not true. You may only have some fine lines but they will be there.
