Could you do your job if you had diarrhoea 4-5 times during your shift? (Not caused due to a food poisoning or a bug)

That’s all really. Could you do your job if you had urgent diarrhoea 4-5 times during an 8 hour shift?

If my manager knew, yes. I'd have to have some procedure for other staff being aware. That wouldn't bother me.

mynameiscalypso · 21/04/2026 21:08

I could do my job, yes. And I have done many times (thanks IBS). But my job is mainly desk-based.

Reevester · 21/04/2026 21:09

Depends if you’re working with food, legally no.

Urgent diarrhoea is fast right? Loo every 2 hours is fine if you are super quick

SilenceInside · 21/04/2026 21:10

Yes, it’s a desk job and I wfh.

BeanMeUp · 21/04/2026 21:11

Yes., but that's because I work from home and manage my own diary.

Could you vs should you are two very different things though.

Doggymummar · 21/04/2026 21:11

My partner does, he has autism which causes high Levels of anxiety causing him to poo about 15 times a day. I could some days but n The field days. Would need immodium

I did when I worked in a school. (Also IBS.) It was difficult, though.

dontmalbeconme · 21/04/2026 21:12

Yes. I WfH, and my job is computer based without too many meetings.

Bennybannsider2 · 21/04/2026 21:12

I couldn't do my job.

LastHotel · 21/04/2026 21:14

Depends. I wfh but in a live environment. If something needs doing at a certain time, you can’t pop off to the loo even for a few seconds.

TheChosenTwo · 21/04/2026 21:15

I could (and sometimes do!).

MigGirl · 21/04/2026 21:16

Probably not as some tasks I can't just stop and the toilets aren't that close to my work room either. I've have been at work while I've had IBS flare ups but realistically if it happen more often I'd really struggle. I'm more constipated with it most of the time.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 21/04/2026 21:16

Yes. Office / home based so I would go to the loo as needed.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 21/04/2026 21:17

No, I work in a kitchen.

MayasJamas · 21/04/2026 21:17

No way. Teacher.

KimonoQueen · 21/04/2026 21:17

I can work from home when I choose - so yes. I have IBD so it happens on a regular basis and my manager is aware. If the flare was really bad tho - id probably be too exhausted to concentrate

DesolatedCheese · 21/04/2026 21:19

No. I work with children and wouldn't be able to get cover urgently enough.

I have IBS actually, but it's triggered by eating on the whole. To avoid this exact situation, I only eat after work (school, so very achievable).

WaryCrow · 21/04/2026 21:22

No. HCA in a hospital. We’re on minimal staff and an ever increasing workload with no chance of anything improving in the near future. Barely enough time to go to the toilet normally as it is.

SwatTheTwit · 21/04/2026 21:24

Could I? Yes. Would I want to? No. You can hear everything in my workplace toilets, that would be grim.

ShakyBake · 21/04/2026 21:26

Just trying to think of the worst jobs to have if suffering from diarrhoea and so far I have;

Deep sea diver
Asstronaut
Steeplejack
Olivia Newton in those stitches up trousers

IAgreeOP · 21/04/2026 21:31

Yes I have Crohn's and just had to find a job where on a bad day I can work if this happens.

MCF86 · 21/04/2026 21:43

No, im often working with a vulnerable person 1:1, I can't just leave and cover doesn't come quick!

FuzzyBumbleeBee · 21/04/2026 21:45

Yep and I have done for years,
I have bile acid malabsorbtion and a dairy intolerance I don't always avoid as much as I should
Good days I only go 4-6 times, bad days are 15+ times a day
I'm upfront with colleges on bad days but also restrict my food intake during or around work to help avoid situations

herbalteabag · 21/04/2026 21:45

No, not at all. The toilet is quite a long way from anywhere I would be working and wfh isn't possible.
