What little acts of rebellion or activism do you do?

I’m not talking about going on marches, but minor things, that you know about.

Mine is I won’t play Michael Jackson songs, after all the alleged behaviour, which certainly wouldn’t be accepted by today’s standards.

The second is I won’t buy McCain products, after they put out an advert for Smileys, which referred to ‘knocker’s’ in them. I thought that language had died out in the seventies.

Depending on the age of the child that’s surely a normal thing to say?!

It perpetuates everyday sexism which many of us believe is a problem.

WellyBellyBoo · 20/04/2026 18:11

I don't buy anything Nike for myself. After the Alberto Salazar scandal and even more so since their awful 'walk-shaming' adverts for running. As a runner in an inclusive running club, I'd be embarrassed to be associated with the brand.

I tell everyone how great they are along with the Strike books.

But thanks, because you have just reminded me that I boycott any films with Radcliffe, Watson and Grint as adults due to their appalling treatment of JKR.

There's more of us and we 💗🌹💗 JKR

Bless. What is an expensive car to you?

what's that got to do with the price of fish? I think we all know a flash car when we see it.

I have a little vitilligo on my hands. I use a tinted spf to darken the paler patches to make them less noticeable. Much easoer than vice versa.

I have vitiligo. I have no pigment on approx 95% of my body. If I could I’d probably have the 5% bleached.

I think everyone on this thread needs to Google activism and also actually start giving a shit about the world and the people in it

Nope sick of being told what to do what to think and how to act. I'll do it my way and support all the brave women who walk their own petty path 😁

When Liz Truss wrote her memoir, Ten Years To Save The West, I kept moving it from the biography section to the crime section in the Waterstones, Piccadilly.

This was a daily occurrence, I might add.

I wish the laugh react was back

You said guess who 'drives an expensive car'.. Expensive means different things to different people. I wondered what it meant to you, given you asked the question.

It goes way further back than that. Almost my entire lifetime.

Oh really? Thanks I'll have a look now

I suppose he never had any surgery and was alabaster white due to "vitiligo" too?

Guilty as the day is long.

Do you have vitiligo? Maybe come back when you have any idea what it’s like to live with the condition. Infinitely worse for a black man in the public arena.

I no longer visit a gaming cafe in our village that provides board games and took all Harry Potter themed games off the shelf due to JK Rowling's view's. They gave the reason on their Facebook page that they didn't want to trigger "good hearted people" who believe spaces should be safe for all. My 12 year old daughter now wouldn't feel comfortable wearing her Harry Potter hoodie as she doesn't want to be accused of not being "good hearted" or anti trans. I just don't appreciate being told I can't enjoy the work of an author due to their views. We are not Nazi Germany where books should be burned in the street, and maybe I'm getting old and grumpy but this just feels like virtue signalling, especially with the big sticker on the door with the Trans Rainbow logo that says "We are a safe space" All places should be a safe space for everyone surely, not just one particular community? It just feels a bit "look at us we are so down with the kids and tolerant" and that it seems so easy to call some anti bloody trans. You can wear yellow and identify as a banana for all I give a fuck but don't dictate to me that's I'm not allowed to be a Harry Potter fan.

Buses near us have a 'safe space' sticker, as do a couple of cafes.

I always want to ask the driver (but I don't because it's fuck all to do with them) 'as opposed to what? Are you saying it's dangerous out there, but not in here? What precisely is the danger? And what are you doing that makes it safe in here but not out there? '

There are laws, in effect both on the bus and outside it, that prevent harassment, violence, sexual harassment, racial hatred, etc. The bus doesn't have extra special rules (and if it did, they would likely be illegal by infringing other people's legal rights).

Its nonsense virtue signalling that wouldn't survive a logical conversation.

Morepositivemum · 20/04/2026 18:23

I support local shops and try to buy in eg smaller pharmacies
I boycott a department store after I’ve seen them ignore eg little old ladies and jump for sophisticated younger ladies who looked like they had money and have also twice heard two make up artists laughing really meanly over a customer, one time WITH THE MANAGER LAUGHING TOO!! I made a shocked face which I made sure they all saw both times

I try not to buy anything American where possible and actually have realised that a lot of the tee shirts this year have Italian or French on them as opposed to other years where eg they named American sports teams or colleges

I take a little longer chatting to people at the checkout (where I work)that seem lonely or who want to talk

Chumbawomble · 20/04/2026 18:23

I turn the Daily Fail upside-down in shops and call trump 'dump' and JD vance 'VD Pants'. Puerile really but helps a bit.

@NovaF call me what you want, I take golf course safety very seriously and so do all golfers I have come across. If you find that entitled and dull that's your business, I call it responsible.
It sounds like a very risky place to play and a dangerous place to walk. I wouldn't be there with a toddler, and if I was I would be moving promptly along paths that crossed the course, for safety and respect.

BTW a municipal golf course is an accessible, low cost public course. So why are you making a sweeping statement that anybody using it is entitled? I'd go as far as saying anyone using it is probably more humble and down to earth than many people that run, cycle or go to the gym.

You said guess who 'drives an expensive car'.. Expensive means different things to different people. I wondered what it meant to you, given you asked the question.

I was reusing your own words. I probably would have said "flash" or "souped up" cars. Your reply mentioned expensive cars so I replied in kind.

You're very defensive about this minor act of rebellion that hurts and impacts no-one.

Depending on the age of the child that’s surely a normal thing to say?!

Why would you say a man and not a person though?

Why the assumption that the optician is a bloke? That's just weird, and unhelpful everyday sexism.

PloddingAlong21 · 20/04/2026 14:04

Sorry to be perhaps asking a daft question….

lots of people boycott Nestle…why?

Nothing to do with palm oil as someone has suggested - I mean, that might be an additional reason now but not the original (and still valid) reason for the boycott.

Nestle have broken WHO guidance about the marketing of baby milk formula in developing countries. Their actions have led to the deaths of thousands of babies. If you Google "Baby Milk Action" or "Nestle Boycott" you'll learn quite a lot.

Mapletree1985 · 20/04/2026 09:18

I don't own a car and take it as a challenge to use public transport for everything. Once I brought a new double mattress home on the bus. I called the bus operator beforehand to make sure they would allow it.

I operate a cash economy and use a dumb phone. I don't do internet banking.

Edited

That reminds me of when I decided to buy a large mirror from Ikea and worked out my route home via tram and bus. I didn't realise how heavy the mirror was until I had bought it! No idea how I managed, but it looked fantastic hanging in the hall of my flat. I left it for the buyers when I moved, as it was too heavy to take with me!

I suppose I might be! I'm tired of people being bigoted / offensive /bitter towards e.g. wealthier people they perceive as 'rich' or 'posh', private school kids etc etc etc. Apparently this behaviour is acceptable, but it's not acceptable the other way. So someone saying they look away from a person driving a fancy car (I honestly can't remember the term used) did tickle my radar ref these people.

Not seeing how teaching small children that roles are gendered is a problem that helps perpetuate everyday sexism is also profoundly depressing.
