Which is you favourite city in the world? I have three
Bristol - for the music scene, creativity and independent spirit
Munich - for the lakes, cycling culture, climate
Marseille - for the beaches, proximity to Provencal towns and landscape, diversity, and the fact it is in France

Rome all the way

Squirrelsnut · 20/04/2026 19:29

London. It's endlessly surprising, fascinating and magical. Graffiti and all. I wish I could afford to live there.

Justletmemoveon · 20/04/2026 19:31

Bristol (where I live), London and New York

Vancouver is a wonderful city.

New York.

I also really loved Moscow.

Booooooooom · 20/04/2026 20:02

London
Shanghai
Cape Town

in that order

Shanghai is amazing. So much culture and fascinating history. Watching the sun rise over the Yangtze River is up there in my list of best nature things I’ve seen. The sun was huge!

Surprised by all those naming Edinburgh. I live here and it's fine, but over all the other options?

UK cities - London comes top for me. The buzz, the theatre, the museums, the juxtaposition of old and new architecture... Unbeatable.

Europe - I've really liked Krakow, Gdansk, Paris, Copenhagen, Nice, Luxembourg City, Prague, Budapest. Basically enjoyed most European cities more than UK ones!

What‘s really interesting is the difference between a city that is great to visit and one that is great to live in. Venice is a truly wonderful place, incredible light, amazing culture - but living there, on the island itself, would drive me bonkers. While there I needed a plain black tee-shirt, took absolutely ages to find a store selling one (which didn’t feature tacky tourist motifs). A thousand shops selling the same made-in-China masks and ‘Murano’ glass, but few affordable everyday goods.

For those of you who named Berlin, what’s your reason for doing so? Lemonthyme is the only poster to give an explanation so far. I’d be really interested in what you like about it.

Kathmandu. I spent a in Nepal with Kathmandu when I was 22. It was the first time i'd been anywhere on my own. It was so beautiful and totally like another world that blew my mind. I slowly went from barely being brave enough to leave the room to walking all around and it felt like it was a real rite of passage for me. The mountains, the food, the temples, the music, the religion. One of the most magical cities on Earth. I met some wonderful people both fellow travellers and Nepalis and I would love to go back there one day

Rockandgrohl · 20/04/2026 20:45

Well there is so much history, from different eras, and it's a place that has had such impact on European and indeed world history. But despite some really dark history - and I don't think there's any attempt to deny or hide that - it's a very vibrant, modern city now that I think looks forwards as well as back to the past. I found it easy to get around, with good public transport, there's some fabulous architecture and lovely green spaces, and there's plenty of good places to eat and interesting things to do - for instance it's home to the Berlin Philharmonic and the zoo is excellent. There's not one stand out thing that I liked about it, it was just then overall feel of the place.
It probably does help that I can speak a bit of German. I mean much like most big cities in Europe there was no shortage of people who speak English but I always feel a bit more confident in places where I can at least read a menu and signposts etc and understand announcements in the railway station. Plus I was lucky enough to be there in spectacularly good weather which I think does influence how you see somewhere. Maybe if it had rained all week I wouldn't list it amongst my favourites!

Venice - there is just nowhere like it on earth.
Singapore - a true melting pot of culture.
Sydney - just cool!

I'm glad someone else said Manchester; I went for the first time aged almost 50 and loved it!

We just got back from two days in Edinburgh with an 8 and nearly 11 year old. It’s a great city for everyone including tweens! We all loved the National Museum of Scotland and Royal Yacht Britannia. DDs loved watching street performers on the Royal mile. There is great food. Lots of walking tours (underground vaults etc.) To be honest one of the very best things is just to walk around the city- it is so atmospheric!

Agreed - it's good for all ages.

I think it's my favourite city in the UK.

Outside the UK, Hamburg.

Delatron · 20/04/2026 21:04

Lyon - I did spent my Uni year abroad there. But it’s so beautiful and I much prefer it to Paris.

London - always loved it. Lived there for 10 years and need to go back regularly to get my fix.

Berlin - completely surprised me. The history, the cool shops, bars. The people were so friendly.

Esperanza25 · 20/04/2026 21:05

3 ‘M’s for me, all previously mentioned: Madrid, Manchester and surprisingly for me too, Miami, just loved it.
