Your favourite city in the world

Which is you favourite city in the world? I have three
Bristol - for the music scene, creativity and independent spirit
Munich - for the lakes, cycling culture, climate
Marseille - for the beaches, proximity to Provencal towns and landscape, diversity, and the fact it is in France

Marrakesh.
I'm another person who liked Marseille.
I don't feel the love for Paris, Amsterdam, London, Barcelona, San Sebastian, Biarritz etc like others do.

InterIgnis · 22/04/2026 18:03

Belgrade, Istanbul, Ljubljana, and Sarajevo.

Catinthehat321 · 22/04/2026 18:13

Barcelona

Delatron · 22/04/2026 18:26

I went right off New York when I had to spend 5 weeks there one summer. Previously it would have been up there in my top 3. Definitely a visit for a few days at the right time of year city!

I also don’t like Barcelona but can’t explain why. I get a bad feeling there.

Aaah, Santander, with the prostitutes openly punting in the park a couple of hundred metres behind the ferry, visible from the rear deck...

Love Saigon, Berlin, Girona, Prague, Belgrade, Damascus, Jerusalem (old part) Beirut, Istanbul, Phnom Penh. Hated Budapest and Barcelona.

Weirdest city, loved it, was Skopje. Place is utterly fucking barking mad

Tell us about Skopje!

Beachwalker66 · 24/04/2026 08:06

Brighton
Paris
Rome
New York

deeahgwitch · 24/04/2026 09:15

I forgot Bruges on my list 🙈
But to my mind it’s more of a town than a city.

DancingLions · 24/04/2026 09:34

Tokyo.

So many people spend a couple of days there before going on elsewhere in Japan and they think they've "seen" it. No one treats other capital cities in the same way. For example if someone goes to New York for a week, they generally don't go elsewhere. Tokyo has so much to do and see. I've spent 3 weeks there in the past and done something different every day. And I go back as often as I can. I have done the other main places in Japan. Kyoto was way over rated imo. A "Disney" version of what people expect Japan to be. Way too touristy for my liking.

Takoneko · 24/04/2026 12:12

@DancingLions I feel the same way about Kyoto. I just didn’t find it an enjoyable place to spend time.

Tokyo is great. My favourite Japanese city is probably Osaka though. I see so many things online saying that Osaka only needs one day or that there’s no point if you’ve been to Tokyo as it’s just a worse version of Tokyo. I can’t relate to that feeling at all and could happily spend weeks in Osaka.

Delft

I've not been there other than cycling past the university but Leiden and Gouda are very pretty. The Netherlands are a bit of an undiscovered gem I think - by me until recently anyway, other than Maastricht I hadn't been anywhere there, just passed through!

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 24/04/2026 17:52

Buenos Aires. Spent a month there. Feels both South American and European. The most amazing restaurants, wine, people, shopping and nightlife.

sorryIdidntmeanto · 24/04/2026 18:11

Yeah, when you put it like that, Santander should probably be off the list!
I'd love to spend some time in Buenos Aires.

Well...there's a fantastic Muslim old quarter, loads of small shops and stuff, then you walk down into the 'town centre' and it's full of massive statues everywhere, imagine all of London's in an area the size of a market town and a huge column with an important warrior on top. Turns out they're hollow (fibreglass maybe?) and modern and they literally spunked all their EU money turning into something like you'd expect from Disney 😁 there's a shallow gravelly stream through the centre with some pirate ships in it too (it's landlocked) which the locals apparently didn't bat an eyelid at anymore as they were no longer amazed at the madness 🤣
Great restaurants too, cheap as chips.
Fucking barking.

Worried about bears is probably the best thing I’ve read this year!

😂😂😂

The bears… they live in the mountains and before I went I read an article in the paper about them going down to the town raiding the bins. The bears in the photo were ginormous.
So I got the cable car to the top and walked along the path in the opposite direction these other people who were in the cable car went. Realised I was all alone and started to panic a bit so I scuttled around just looking for people. Saw a family with kids so I hung around nearby thinking if any bears show up I’ll be safer. Or able to run faster than them…
Took my photos and left immediately.
Fear really is a gift 😅

The chances of encountering a bear around Brasov are slim, but by no means non existent!

We actually went on a guided hike to track bears and other wildlife (and we did find their tracks- and those of wolves and wildcat too- although we did not get a hoped for glimpse of the animals themselves), and our taxi driver on the way there showed us a picture he'd taken of a bear raiding the bins in Poiana Brasov the night before.

Funnily enough I wasn't that keen on Brasov though- it struck me as extremely touristy with not much to do.

You’re right there’s nothing to do really. I liked how quaint the little town was but that train station is rough!
I went only for the bear sanctuary, it’s called Libearty and was started by a woman who was trying to save a caged bear. The bear died before she could so after that she started her own rescue, the government donated land and forest and she’s rescued loads of bears from circuses and cages outside restaurants.
They live out their lives in this sanctuary but some of them are completely broken, it’s heartbreaking seeing such powerful animals reduced to that.
Anyway that’s the only reason I went I’ve been twice now, they have wolves too and live cam.

wantmorenow · 27/04/2026 20:21

I went to Cardiff as an English student and fell in love with the place and never really left Wales again. Love the city, it's open spaces, multiculturalism and loads to do and see. Feels like home now.

Second earlier poster, went to Granada and just felt like it was somewhere I could visit forever or even live in. Amazing city.

Málaga, the city, the beach, amazing food and friendly culture. Love the place.

DugnuttEyeBoogies · 27/04/2026 20:37

Uk - Edinburgh
Europe - Florence or Rome too hard to choose
World Wide - Melbourne. Vancouver.
Want to go - Tokyo and anywhere in South America which is one area I’ve never been.

Oh another poster has said Dubrovnik, it was gorgeous too.

Many wonderful cities but the ones I love most would be London, Paris, St Petersburg and Venice. Honourable mention to Seattle, which is a great city ravaged by drug issues.

San Francisco also ravaged by fentanyl sadly. I saw such a difference in trips 20 odd years apart. It was sad, kinda destroyed good memories.

Wouldn’t go to the US now if you paid me cos of the Orange One.

Callmeback · 20/04/2026 09:06

London, Edinburgh, Krakow, Vegas, Bath, York, Durham, Lincoln.

Vegas seems very Odd One Out in this list 😁

bittertwisted · 27/04/2026 20:48

Bangkok, just everything
Rome, the romance and wonderment
Liverpool, my home town

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/04/2026 20:56

I feel I've been to barely a handful of cities and some are so different that comparison/ranking is a bit odd.

I really loved New York and Seville, but obviously for different reasons.

I also loved Amsterdam, Porto, Barcelona, Lisbon, Munich, Boston, Seattle, Osaka, Kyoto, Cadiz, Montpelier, The Hague, Bruges, Salzburg, Vienna, Ljubliana, Sienna, Rome, Girona, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin and doubtless several others. I couldn't rank them against each other though. I think I just like being away in a different place!

Yuja · 27/04/2026 21:01

London, Singapore and Barcelona are my top 3. I’ve lived in the first two. I also really like Paris

So many saying Edinburgh - we’ve thought about going this year. What’s so great about it? Would tweens enjoy?

@thisistSuch a beautiful city architecture and history wise. Just wander around and look up! The contrast between Old Town and New Town.

Compact enough you can walk to and between many of the main touristy bits. Some area are hilly/cobbled streets so bring sensible shoes.

Great culture - of course the Festival/Fringe/Tattoo in August is world famous as the biggest arts festival in the world but year round there’s the art galleries, comedy clubs, bookshops. It’s got a fun cosmopolitan vibe, I know lots of people from different countries who came as students and have stayed as they loved it so much.

Plenty of green spaces. Climb Arthur’s Seat or Calton Hill
for a great view of the city. The Meadows is popular with students to hang out and chill on a nice day.

Lots of independent shops and restaurants/coffee places. Big foodie scene. Dont shop on Princes St/Royal Mile - head to places like Stockbridge or Bruntsfield for little independents. Big name brands on George St/St Andrew Sq if that’s your thing.

Things for tweens - obviously the castle visit and Camera Obscura. National Museum of Scotland. Our Dynamic Earth if they like science stuff. Britannia ship tour. Mary Kings Close - the underground street sealed off after the plague. The Chocolatarium experience if they love chocolate! There is a Zoo but you need the lungs and calves of a mountain goat as it’s on a steep hill.

The hop on hop off bus tours give you a good start to navigate your way around and a basic history. And the tram system is brilliant.

If I think of anything else I’ll let you know.
