If you'd never been to Liverpool and had 2 days (and evenings there) what would be your priorities?

Just that really.

And is the Cavern Club a must do, or is it all a bit touristy these days?

Albert Docks
Maritime/Slavery museum
Beatles museum if you’re a fan

Cavern club isn’t all that but if you’re a big Beatles fan it’s worth it

If you want to walk a little way out of the city centre you can walk up to visit the metropolitan and/or Anglican cathedrals, and have a drink in the Philharmonic dining rooms (with original listed gents toilets!)

Also Liverpool Chinatown is the oldest in Europe so worth visiting if you fancy Chinese food

You can walk quite far if you want to see a lot so if that’s a problem Liverpool is one of the cities a hop on hop off bus tour is worth it - there is a Beatles bus tour too

We’ve only been on very short visits, but The Philharmonic Pub. Astonishingly wonderful decor - well worth a visit.

Corny old ferry cross the Mersey!

canuckup · 19/04/2026 20:22

Anglican Cathedral

Philharmonic bar

Walker art gallery

HPFA · 19/04/2026 20:25

Take the ferry across the Mersey - the waterfront really is beautiful seen from the river.

There are ten minute "commuter" crossings at peak times or 50 minute cruises.

It's a while since I've been there but I seem to remember lovely Georgian houses in the city centre.

ANagsHead · 19/04/2026 20:26

Hope Street: two Cathedrals (one at each end), the Everyman Theatre (book tickets if there’s a play on). And Hope St Hotel!

The Walker Gallery.

Albert Docks and the museums / Tate Gallery.

Sefton Park Palm House.

Another Place: Crosby Beach (Anthony Gormley sculptures).

ghostyslovesheets · 19/04/2026 20:28

All the museums and the art gallery, Catholic cathedrals, a coffee or wine in Panoramic 34, trip on the ferry and a stroll down New Bo promenade- but that’s a lot for 2 days

MaturingCheeseball · 19/04/2026 20:40

I really, really enjoyed the Beatles houses - excellent tour. The guide we had at John Lennon’s house was brilliant.

The Cavern Club is worth doing - you can imagine what it was like.

I strode up to the counter at the ferry terminal and asked, “Return across the Mersey, please!” only to be told it only runs at peak times. So that was disappointing.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/04/2026 20:42

Anfield but I’m a Liverpool supporter

Everybodys · 19/04/2026 20:42

I love the docks and riverside area, and the Museum of Liverpool is great. Also just to check, which days will you be going? Many of their museums are shut on Mondays.

Crinkle77 · 19/04/2026 20:43

Maritime Museum and the Tate currently closed for a massive refurbishment. The Cavern isn't the original club either.

HoldMyWine · 19/04/2026 20:45

Albert docks. The bombed out cathedral. The liver building. The open top bus is good. The cavern club we avoided. The street it’s on is a dive.

FlorenceBlack · 19/04/2026 20:57

The Liver Building tour, amazing views from the top

Bumpinthenight · 20/04/2026 04:49

Central library.

And those listed above!

Luddite26 · 20/04/2026 04:58

If you are in your own car you could book a house tour from Speke Hall which takes you to John and Paul's homes . It's through the National Trust and is one of the best 'museum' trips I have ever been on. Very emotional! Fantastic guides.
The Liverpool museum is great we were lucky to see a Holly Johnson exhibition which we loved but the whole museum is great. The Cathedrals and The Walker Gallery and round The Albert Dock.

aintnothinbutagstring · 20/04/2026 06:18

Bold street is quite nice for indie shops and cafes. Strolling around the docks - Tate Liverpool, the Maritime Museum. Cavern Club and Mathew Street area can get a bit rowdy!

aintnothinbutagstring · 20/04/2026 06:19

Find somewhere to eat Scouse too!

DilemmaDelilah · 20/04/2026 17:19

For me my priority would be to visit my daughter 😁.

But definitely Chinatown, and there is a great Chinese bakery in Berry Street.

Papergirl1968 · 20/04/2026 17:33

I was there a few weeks ago and there is a big wheel thing - like a smaller London Eye - near the M&A Banking Arena in the Docks area. I didn’t go on it this time - I was attending an event at the Arena - but what I saw of Liverpool did make me want to visit again for a couple of days.

tougholdbirdy · 20/04/2026 17:33

Visiting paul McCartney and Jihn
Lennons childhood homes. You have to
book early with national
trust .

mismomary · 20/04/2026 18:02

Climb the Liver building. Great views of the docks.

Placestogo · 20/04/2026 18:08

Hop on, hop off bus tour - a great way to visit the coty and learn about it.
the museum on the docks

Yellowpapersun · 20/04/2026 18:13

The Anglican cathedral. You can go up to the top of the tower and see for miles on a clear day.
The Western Approaches museum.

Dliplop · 20/04/2026 18:18

Slavery museum. Anything else depends on interests but that museum is special.

ThePieceHall · 20/04/2026 18:36

Anglican Cathedral (seek out the whispering arch)
Catholic Cathedral, especially the crypt
Walker Art Gallery
World Museum
Central Library
Philharmonic Pub
Philharmonic Hall
The Victoria Museum (owned and run by the University of Liverpool) and an Alfred Waterhouse building (Natural History Museum) with an incredible collection of art, including an original Aubudon/Audubon (?) bird book
Bold Street for the cafe society
John Lewis and Liverpool One for the shopping
A ferry across the Mersey
Jump on the Merseyrail to Crosby beach for the Antony Gormley statues
The tiled floor at Great George’s Hall
Chinatown
Pier Head & Liver Buildings
Baltic Triangle for cool bars and restaurants

stayathomegardener · 20/04/2026 19:14

We loved the underground tunnel tour beneath the Mersey.
