If you'd never been to Liverpool and had 2 days (and evenings there) what would be your priorities?

Just that really.

And is the Cavern Club a must do, or is it all a bit touristy these days?

Liverpool is my closest big city and the hop on hop off bus tour of the city is one of the best I’ve been on anywhere. You can book a river cruise across the Mersey and a bus tour together which is worth every penny.
Unless you are an avid Beatles fan I’d give the Cavern club a miss - the road its in is definitely not one of the best Liverpool has to offer and the Cavern itself is nothing like it was back in the day.
All the museums are worth a visit as is the L1 shopping area if you don’t have easy access to a lot of the big name shops at home. As someone else mentioned Bold Street which you can walk up on the way to the cathedrals and china town has a more independent vibe with a whole variety of different restaurants and cafes

The Bridewell Pub x Panoramic 34. Anglican Cathedral x Liver Building Tour x Bold Street x Pullman Hotel for food x Titanic Hotel for food and accommodation. Royal Albert Dock

Sleepeazie · 21/04/2026 19:07

We went last year. We loved;

  • albert docks for pics and drinks
  • the cathedral tour to the top
  • quirky quarter museum
  • Tacos at the indoor food market with 6 different restaurants (maybe on bold street?)
we didn’t do the ferry as it was winter 🥶

we didn’t particularly rate the shopping centre as we live near a big one.

we loved the random photo oops. Liverpool sign by the shopping centre and upside down house etc

DreamingofBrie · 21/04/2026 19:14

Hope Street - a cathedral at either end and the beautiful Philharmonic Hall (and Philharmonic Dining Rooms) in between. The Georgian Quarter and its beautiful houses is worth a stroll and Chinatown, with its arch and the bombed out church is worth a visit.

Albert Dock is lovely on a sunny day and the Museum of Liverpool is fun. Likewise, the museums area around William Brown Street (World Museum, Walker Art Gallery and the beautiful Library) are worth a visit.

If you like football, the Anfield tour is a good morning or afternoon out.

ValleyClouds · 21/04/2026 19:18

@Sleepeazie I think you mean Duke St Food and Drink Market near Quirky Quarter @Holtome both worth a visit

Sleepeazie · 21/04/2026 19:20

@ValleyClouds yes I do. Sorry for
any confusion OP.

MissAmbrosia · 21/04/2026 19:25

Port Sunlight and Lady Lever Gallery

Crikeyalmighty · 21/04/2026 19:29

I like a stroll up Bold st - really is a world tour eatery street !

RocSor · 21/04/2026 22:41

Magical Mystery Tour Bus, takes you all around significant Beatles places including their homes, Strawberry Fields etc. The Tour guide was full of interesting facts. I first went to the Cavern in 1963, (yes, I'm that old) and again 3 years ago. It was replicated on opposite side of Mathew Street, but its a proper pub obv with Merseysound emphasis and not really touristy, just popular. Philharmonic pub is great.

waltzingparrot · 21/04/2026 22:48

We were only there for two days and did the Beatles coach tour one day and the Beatles Experience the other. Both great. The queue at the Cavern Club was so long we didn't bother. Did the Liverpool wheel but wouldn't bother again - not great views.

DreamyJade · 21/04/2026 22:58

The Magical Mystery Tour is great fun. It takes you to all the childhood homes of The Beatles, Strawberry Field, Penny Lane, Eleanor Rigby’s grave (which is in the church opposite the village hall where Lennon and McCartney first met. As a pp says above, if you’re a big fan and want to go into Lennon and McCartney’s homes you have to book on the National Trust website. The tours are very small and book up weeks in advance.

Kayemm · 21/04/2026 23:11

Go to the Philharmonic for a drink and then over to The Art School for food. Gorgeous place.

Pericombobulations · 21/04/2026 23:55

We went to 'Another Place' by Antony Gormley at Crosby Beach, which really moved me. I enjoyed the views of Liverpool from there too.

We didnt do much in the centre sadly as was visiting DS at uni. But would like to go back. My over-riding memory is that The Beatles are celebrated everywhere!

Bold street is quite nice for indie shops and cafes. Strolling around the docks - Tate Liverpool, the Maritime Museum. Cavern Club and Mathew Street area can get a bit rowdy!

Bold Street also famous for many reported weird time slip experiences - documented in Uncanny podcast. Though I’ve never experienced any myself, but you never know!

Would also thoroughly recommend both of these. As other posters have said the city really does revel in the legacy of the Beatles. Nothing drives it home to you though as much as visiting the houses where Lennon and McCartney were brought up.

The bus tour was lots of fun - seemed to be a fair few folk celebrating their 64th birthdays!
Enjoyed the Cavern Club - decent cover band.
The Ferry also had to be done.

Anfield but I’m a Liverpool supporter

As an Evertonian my advice to the OP would be not to waste their time visiting the stadium with the unsightly loft conversion and just go to the brand new, award winning, state of the art one on the banks of the Royal Blue Mersey instead! 😉🤣 But then admittedly I am still feeling a little sore from your lot’s last minute smash and grab on Sunday.

Sooo, being more generous, and as a massive football fan myself, I’d honestly recommend a visit to all three grounds, especially as Goodison and Anfield only have Stanley Park in between them (a park which on a nice day, is a lovely place to stroll through).

@Holtome if football is of any interest, try and go to one of the stadium tours. Naturally I can only speak to the Everton ones, but they are incredibly informative, fun and the guides are all brilliant and the perfect showcases for the famous Scouse wit!

COYB! 💙

I would love to be able to see Liverpool through a tourist’s eyes. Town’s just a pain in the arse to me!

Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight, other side of the water but totally worth it.

I love Liverpool. You will not be short of things to do. We had a relaxed crawl atound the pubs. Proper old fashioned atmosphere with a good northern welcome. It’s a few years since we had a weekend break but we stayed in the Adelphi. It’s a gloriously run down grand hotel with a lot of history. The rooms are very faded grandeur. The grandest of which are over the front of the hotel. The place has marbled walls and some amazing function rooms. We explored the hotel while we were there. We are not fans of sterile modern hotels, preferring something with a bit of history.

I wanted to have a look at St George’s Hall, such an imposing building and very typical of the Victorian industrial boom time. There is also a memorial just outside it for the Hillsborough football disaster - my DH is a Liverpool fan.

Plenty of museums, and monuments around the city. And if you want to mix with the younger generation you can visit Concert Square.

I found out while researching my family tree that my DFs ancestors live in Liverpool for a couple of generations before moving north to Cumbria. But obviously they married into a few Liverpudlian families. We visited the church where my GG grandparents were married. The slums/courts where they lived have long gone but there is a reproduction of one with their history in one of the museums.

And whilst I am a proud Scouser, so admittedly biased, I genuinely don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say the City’s waterfront from the Albert Docks at the Southern end, past the Pier Head and the Three Graces, up as far North to the Hill Dickinson stadium, is one of the most aesthetically and architecturally beautiful in the world.

There is also so much history. You’ll be amazed how intrinsic Liverpool was in shaping the Britain we have today.

The roots of the City are tied to industrialisation, the growth, dominance and abolition of the slave trade, global trade and emigration/immigration (particularly Transatlantic and India trade routes), maritime expansion/exploration/innovation and sadly, tragedy, the exponential growth in wealth of the British Empire, the multicultural melting pot a port city encourages and seemingly thrives with, voting rights and suffrage, docker strikes, unions and Toxteth riots, political agitation and mass unemployment, the transforming of the music scene with iconic artists, establishing league football (in Everton’s case, not once but twice!) and going on to produce two of the most successful teams in the country.

And yet the part of the City we are the most proud of is its people. Friendly, open, warm and respectful, with an amazing sense of humour. After a 2 day trip, you’re guaranteed to be leaving the City with more friends than when you arrived.

I do hope if you make the trip, you have the best time.

I love Liverpool , we live in Bath and Liverpool is one of our favourite UK city breaks and it’s a fun place with in my opinion genuinely friendly open minded and quite sharp people - if you go to my original home area in the East Midlands it always seems to have an aura of doom , slight aggression and chip on the shoulder - ( think Lee Anderson) - I just don’t get that vibe in Liverpool - Theresawine bar I really love, quite retro, tiles on walls, great music, up near the second branch of Mowgli - had a few good evenings in there- much prefer it to Manchester , it’s a great example to me of proper’British culture’ but incredibly multi cultural and it works xx

Lots of really good suggestions I wont add to them however keep your eyes open as there is loads of street art.
Huge paintings on the side of buildings and lots of sculptures dotted around the streets.
Enjoy your time here.
