If you'd never been to Liverpool and had 2 days (and evenings there) what would be your priorities?

And is the Cavern Club a must do, or is it all a bit touristy these days?

We went for a short weekend a few years ago. We went up the St. John's Beacon tower for a great view of the city, then round both cathedrals which were amazing but very different. Went to the top of the tower at the Anglican cathedral but the lift went wrong and we had to walk down - really interesting actually - part of the route took us outside on the roof!
Also went to the Cavern Club - it was midmorning so very quiet but there was a guitarist playing and singing Beatles songs. I had assumed it would be expensive but it was free to enter and prices same as a pub.

Fantastic city! Do the ferry cross the Mersey - it’s pure nostalgic atmosphere! The Cavern club for a drink and listen to a live band. The Liver Building. A walk round the shopping areas like Liverpool One. The Bridewell pub is great, a former police lock up that’s been restored.

I was born in Liverpool. Both cathedrals and the Philharmonic hall are well worth a visit. Dont miss a trip on the Mersey. If you are into the pre-Raphelites try the Walker Art Gallery and the museum next door. Albert docks for trendy wine bars, cafes and shops. Liverpool people are very friendly and chatty.
