Would you stay in a B&B with a shared bathroom?

We fancy a trip to London over the bank holiday, needing an overnight stay between Sun and Mon.

I was just about to click "book" on the pleasant looking BnB in a central location when I realised there was a "shared" bathroom.

I now realise I have become too prim and proper to countenance this, and will have to stump up extra to get my own bathroom.

We're going on the National Express, so it's not like I must have my own space all the time..

Would you do this?

Absolutely not

AntiHop · 18/04/2026 13:48

I wouldn't. Hate sharing a bathroom

Gardenquestion22 · 18/04/2026 13:49

Very much depends. Have done on occasion in nice b and bs in the lakes and the like and it’s not been an issue. But much prefer my own bathroom.

I might if I liked the place. But would be checking for other options first!

MonaChopsis · 18/04/2026 13:51

Total non issue. Do you use the toilet on aeroplanes, or at your office?

Do you shower at your gym, or at the public pool?

If so, why is this different?

lemonraspberry · 18/04/2026 13:51

Might do for one night max, provided reviews did not highlight any red flags.

Cricketashes · 18/04/2026 13:52

Definitely not

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/04/2026 13:52

No, I wouldn't consider it.

Lemonfrost · 18/04/2026 13:53

I wouldn't now, but I stayed in a hotel in NY once where each floor had several very clean and well maintained bathrooms and all was fine.

newmenewwhatever · 18/04/2026 13:54

honestly no!
I just want to be able to use the bathroom when I want and not have to wait for a stranger to finish.

User3456 · 18/04/2026 13:55

No I would rather pay more for my own bathroom

I know.. realistically I'm sure even a shared bathroom is probably cleaner than mine at home - and it's only one night..

No. I'm menopausal and often need to go to the loo in the night. I wouldn't want to have to get dressed and wander around a B&B in the night.

redskyAtNigh · 18/04/2026 13:58

Yes if it was much cheaper and I wanted to save the money.

ChaToilLeam · 18/04/2026 13:58

For one night, really not an issue. Have also taken this option on longer trips where finding well priced accommodation has been an issue. Not ideal but also not the end of the world.

houseofisms · 18/04/2026 14:02

We recently stayed in a fancy BnB and the photos made the room look spacious with a bathroom. Wasn’t until we got there that realised it was a shared bathroom (my fault for not seeing that)

the room was tiny which is fine but when we came back from a meal out my partner went to plug the kettle in but the cord was too short and the kettle fell off the little table (other than that we were really quiet)
next thing, the next door room started banging heavily on the wall and slamming doors. Our door was right next to theirs and we shared a bathroom. I spent the night too scared to go to the bathroom.
next morning my partner went for a shower and the other room kept banging on the bathroom door demanding to use the toilet.

never again

BG2015 · 18/04/2026 14:02

No way. I get up a few times during the night to use the toilet, no way I'm sharing.

Plus some people have awful toilet habits. Yuck.

shhblackbag · 18/04/2026 14:05

No.

Secretseverywhere · 18/04/2026 14:07

I would but I did a lot of hosteling back in the day so am pretty relaxed. I would bring flip flops for the shower though.

AnnaQuayRules · 18/04/2026 14:07

It depends. I like hiking and have stayed in hostels where there are shared loos and showers. So it doesn't faze me. But if it was a London trip with DH then I'd prefer an ensuite.

Yep, I agree, wouldn't even consider it.

Hannaseed · 18/04/2026 14:09

If it was fairly cheap and only for one night, then yes.

CandyEnclosingInvisible · 18/04/2026 14:10

Absolutely not. It isn't like using the loo on a plane or train, or the shower at a swimming pool, because this is what I will be using when I wake up at 3am and am wearing my pyjamas and I need a wee and I don't want to unlock my bedroom door not knowing anything about the people I am sharing with - who could be drunk and unpleasant even if they aren't actually dangerous to be near, and might have left the shared bathroom in a horrible state (see other threads on mn about the state pub loos get in). The cheapest B&Bs in london are always going to be awful. Pay more for something better than this.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 18/04/2026 14:12

I'm an evening showerer, so it doesn't bother me too much.

I think I mind it less in a hostel with communal shower rooms to sharing with just one other room - feels too personal.

Pedallleur · 18/04/2026 14:14

No. Sounds like guest houses we stayed at when growing up and en-suite was some foreign thing. It's also a fact that MNetters can't use any toilet but their own and must keep their bowels closed during the entire holiday.
