Would you stay in a B&B with a shared bathroom?

We fancy a trip to London over the bank holiday, needing an overnight stay between Sun and Mon.

I was just about to click "book" on the pleasant looking BnB in a central location when I realised there was a "shared" bathroom.

I now realise I have become too prim and proper to countenance this, and will have to stump up extra to get my own bathroom.

We're going on the National Express, so it's not like I must have my own space all the time..

Would you do this?

No, I'd rather just stay in a travel lodge or premier inn if I was looking for a cheap option.

ChopstickNovice · 18/04/2026 17:25

Nope. I have to wee in the night at least once. Own bathroom all the way.

canuckup · 18/04/2026 17:37

No. I'd rather stay home or save up for my own bathroom

Is it a big bathroom with cubicles and showers like a gym, or a normal bathroom to be shared like a house share? First one definitely yes, second one no!

Same, I don't mind sharing where there are separate, multiple shower and toilet cubicles, camping, hostelling etc but not a normal house type bathroom where there's only one and the toilet is in with the shower. I wear pjs or a long nightshirt so can easily go in the night by just putting on flip-flops but mostly I don't need to.

Do you know how expensive TL and PI can be in Central London?

I recently stayed here after a night at the theatre. Far more positive experience than I thought it would be.

And £20 for the night in Piccadilly Circus. I felt I was winning at life!

Definitely not!

I do, that's were I usually stay. Not great but does the job.

That place you've linked to look great though, was it noisy at night? And how were the bathrooms?

Favouritefruits · 18/04/2026 19:27

No way! I’d never boom anywhere without a private bathroom!

elliesmummy19 · 18/04/2026 19:32

I have Crohn’s so this would be a no from me!

mindutopia · 18/04/2026 19:34

I have and it was fine. In fact, in my 20s, I needed short term accommodation because the flat I was letting wasn’t ready when I was meant to be. I ended up staying in a B&B with shared bathrooms for about 6 weeks. It was a weird mix of tourists and people like me who were living there (some of them for quite a long time). It was lovely. I quite enjoyed it.

But in my mid 40s when I wee 4 times a night, no, I would not. There are always other options.

BridgetJonesV2 · 18/04/2026 19:39

Did it once. Not a cat in hells I'd ever do it again, even sharing with family.

Primroseandgolf · 18/04/2026 19:41

No I wouldn’t.

Bookloverforever · 18/04/2026 19:45

Yes potentially.

if it was very cheap.

depending on how many you shared with

it wouldn’t be my first choice, as I wee in the night a lot

i have stayed in a youth hostel a few times in York and it’s never a problem- although it’s always seemed quiet and not many shared it.

wouldn’t want it for a long holiday

HauntedBungalow · 18/04/2026 19:46

Yeah Travelodge and premier inn are both ££££ in London, and really quite poor value for what you get. I wouldn't be able to go there as often as I do, and see as much theatre/music as I do there, if I had to pay Travelodge prices.

notacooldad · 18/04/2026 19:48

It wouldn't get my first choice to do so.
I had to when we were in Tasmania for a gig and it was the only accommodation we could get for less than the equivalent of £600 a night.

APatternGrammar · 18/04/2026 19:50

If the price reflected the inconvenience and was worth it to me at the time yes. But completely understandable that others choose not to.

CheeseWisely · 18/04/2026 19:50

Have done in the past. I stayed in a historic hotel in San Francisco with shared bathrooms. IIRC the one allocated to us was shared by 3 rooms, but the layout of the bathroom meant that the shower was behind a locked door, as was the toilet, so in theory someone could shower while someone else peed while someone else washed their hands (although we actually never found it occupied). During the day there was a cleaner in there almost constantly, she’d leave to let you use it, so it was in that respect cleaner than any en-suite I’ve ever used. Absolutely no issue with that. On the other hand, I consider myself at the great age of 42 far too old for hostel type accommodation with everyone sharing one large bathroom / shower / toilet set up.

Haffalomp · 18/04/2026 19:56

I did it quite a bit when I was younger, in youth hostels and cheap b&bs and it was fine. Stayed in a youth hostel and used camping shower blocks fairly recently although not for cost reasons, that was just the accommodation options where we went. It wasn't a problem although it's not my first choice for a city centre where there will be en-suite options, and we can afford it. I almost never get up the night for a wee and I sleep in pjs so wouldn't have to get dressed for a night time wee.

I find PI & TL super expensive in central London.

The capsule hotel beds were silent. I had a really great night of sleep. It was just weird pulling down the shutter before sleeping.

The bathrooms were clean, with hot powerful showers. The towels you were given were more than adequate for a £20 stay.

I've recommended these capsules to everyone I know.

Tigerraar · 18/04/2026 22:46

Definitely not, especially not somewhere as anonymous as London! PP mentioned something about public toilets being no different... Well, it is, because you don't normally need to use them in your pyjamas in the middle of the night!

HauntedBungalow · 18/04/2026 22:48

I like the idea of capsules - in a way it's less socially awkward if everything is completely anonymous - but reviews say there are bedbugs. I don't know if that's just people playing silly beggars though. It's hard to tell.

SpottyAlpaca · 18/04/2026 23:00

No.

Shared bathrooms in b&bs, hotels, halls etc : Been there, done that. Many times.

But these days I can afford to not share bathrooms. I’m not a hotel snob, Premier Inn is completely fine, in fact I’m staying in one next weekend. But it’s like flying in long~haul business class. Once you’ve done it a few times, it’s very difficult to go back to economy if you don’t have to.

garlictwist · 18/04/2026 23:06

Yes and I have but it would have to be super cheap to make up for it. I stayed in one in London recently that was £70 a night with shared bathroom and kitchen. It was actually lovely and I didn’t even see anyone else although I heard them. No way you’re paying less than that anywhere else.

user2848502016 · 18/04/2026 23:09

No, just no

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 18/04/2026 23:09

I have shared on a yacht. An amazing experience sailing through the Great Bear Rainforest in Canada and options are very limited! In London - no. There’s just no need. You can stay a bit further out and not share.
