Are you stocking up on food/household items?

Have you started ‘stocking up’ on items you think might be rising sharply or might become harder to get hold of?
We know that there will be a knock on effect of ships being stuck in the Straight of Hormuz.
I read that food prices are expected to go up by 9% by Christmas. I can’t remember where I read it don’t shoot me but I thought at the time that it was a ‘proper’ source (as opposed to my mates from school on Facebook).
If you are stocking up -what are you buying?

No. But then I’m not a selfish twat who listens to panic mongers.

Overpricedsmoothie · 17/04/2026 22:19

You might get a better response on the Preppers threads. I don't see anything wrong with stocking up on some basic essentials.

Thats just nasty,
Just because you don’t stock up/plan ahead doesn’t mean you have to be a bitch.

I think it is good to be prepared for general disruption. If I can't get to the shops for a week, of the power or water go off etc we are prepared. I wouldn't stock in case of general price rises. I don't want to live off only long life and tinned food. It does seem inevitable that price rises are our near future sadly.

frozendaisy · 17/04/2026 22:30

No because we will just adapt if need be as humans have throughout the ages (it’s a characteristic of our seeming success).

No. Unless the count the years worth of loo roll I bought recently from Who Gives a Crap because it was cheaper to buy it that way?

(Excellent looking roll if anyone's interested)

I do this too as you get a discount.
Also, life is too short to buy toilet paper weekly 😊

No because I’m not a knob…. Panic buying iS what causes shortages. Just buy what you need as you need it…

I don’t buy jet fuel very regularly anyway so I’m not too bothered.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 17/04/2026 22:41

My husband has never recovered from the toilet roll and pasta during Covid. So if it all goes to shit we’re covered.

MovingWithNicole · 17/04/2026 22:41

I recently bought a year’s worth of coffee pods because they were on offer.
would have bought more, but had to watch the use by date.
Saved around €200

I’m not stocking up. I shop like usual, if there’s an offer I buy two and not one as I’ll use it the week after. I think stocking up isn’t wise as when you stock pile, unless you organise by date ect you might actually be wasting money if things go out of date.

I disagree. 2kg of pasta would do less than 4 meals in my house.

I normally try to be frugal but today I bought summer clothes. Not because I'm worried about war full out. But because life is shit and bleak. Got my first new winter coat in about ten years today. Red puffer Nordic waterproof below the knee for £5 in the charity shop. Bring on not being able to heat the house next year!

I did my costco shop of 80 toilet rolls before Easter. But see above re the pasta. We are not a family of 2 or even 4. I'm sure 500g of pasta and four toilet rolls lasts most people a year but not us!

The only thing I think I should really buy is a dehumidifier. As this winter might be very expensive, cold and Mouldy! More throws might also be bought. Ideally solar angels and a EV but can only really budget for some primark throws.

Lakeland do pretty decent heated throws, I bought the £40 one 18 months ago, it's been a godsend.

We have a dehumidifier, we need it for the basement, but I do hang clothes in there sometimes and it does a sterling job of drying them for me.

TeeBee · 17/04/2026 23:01

Nope. I’ve just thrown some extra potatoes in grow bags and sown some more beans. We’ll be fine.

Tollington · 17/04/2026 23:21

I’ve still got four thousand toilets rolls from 2020 and seventy five litres of hand sanitiser so I’m sorted

No because it’s selfish. Have people really learned nothing from Covid? Some people cannot afford to stock up at all - you’re depriving them. Some people live from hand to mouth each week - you’re depriving them. Some people don’t have easy access to be able to get to the shops so can only go at particular times - you’re depriving them. Need I go on..? It’s antisocial and makes life harder for the poorest in society.

Back in covid times it was horrendous where I live, I have one small coop just up the road and 2 wee corner shops then a mile up a wee sainsbury's and Iceland. EVERYONE AND I MEAN EVERYONE!! Bought out the whole shops, we had nothing and online orders were so hard to get,i ordered a big asda shop (2 adults and 2 small children) and something happened on asdas side and it got cancelled,I had hardly anything left by then and was in tears 😢. The lovely woman sorted it for me and we got everything thankfully but it turned out it was all the customers bulk buying and being greedy.

I will never forget that feeling that day,and the greed of some people 🥺

I went into a small asda in the small town closest to my small village just after the great loo roll crisis of spring 2020. An old man was crying as he & his wife had none -he was trying to find kitchen roll /tissues -all gone. He was so so upset begging the staff to look for some (I don’t know where he expected them to magically it up from.
I went home (30 min round journey) and got him a 4 pack and met him back there. He was so so grateful.
It was the idiots who emptied the freezers that got me. Why? Just why?
