Are you stocking up on food/household items?

Have you started ‘stocking up’ on items you think might be rising sharply or might become harder to get hold of?
We know that there will be a knock on effect of ships being stuck in the Straight of Hormuz.
I read that food prices are expected to go up by 9% by Christmas. I can’t remember where I read it don’t shoot me but I thought at the time that it was a ‘proper’ source (as opposed to my mates from school on Facebook).
If you are stocking up -what are you buying?

No.

Can I just reiterate I’m NOT condoning or doing any panic buying.

stockpiling as a result of a crisis/disaster is panic buying when everyone does the same thing.

I’m not stockpiling as a result of a crisis/disaster.
I always have good levels of stock in.
Im not going out and buying an extra freezer to fill with frozen peas and chips like people did as soon as lockdown hit.

Is anybody advocating buying multiple loaves of bread??

Bread was my example. I could have said pasta. Or coffee.

I’m a regular bulk buyer (not prepper)! 😂
Costco trip monthly for stocking up. However I’m certainly not panic buying, it makes stock shortages worse.

Did you see bins stuffed with pasta and coffee?
Panic buying is completely different to stocking up.
I often bake my own bread ( still can’t do a decent baguette) and was demented during lockdown when I couldn’t get yeast because people who had never baked bread all ran out and bought it! I bet most of that was thrown out.

I won’t have anyone criticise the way I run my household. If you prefer to pay full price for things that’s on you. Nothing gets wasted here (which is more than I can say for most people, based on what I read in the papers).

Startthecar · 17/04/2026 21:39

I won't be stockng up on anything other than what I usually do if there's a sale on something I use a lot of.
I mean, where's the end? You could take 20 packages of loo rolls, but where would you put them? It's not a good idea to get people worried and thinking about stocking up, which creates panic buying, and shortages, which drives prices up even sooner.

Same, I buy things at their lowest price whether I currently need them or not
which does mean occasionally I have something like 10 bottles of shampoo (reduced to 30p from £12, my usual brand) but it works out provided everything has a long shelf life

DaisyDooley · 17/04/2026 21:43

I buy quite a bit on Amazon ‘subscribe and save’ as it’s 10/15% cheaper which all adds up. I get mutti and cirio tomatoes from them as it’s so much cheaper to buy 12 with 15% off than buy three tins a week.

PLUS my latest thing is I buy supermarket (Tesco) gift cards on quidco/TCB and use them for my weekly shopping. Just got 4% on Tesco today at Quidco s9 bough5 a £250 card which will last 2-3 weeks and got £10 cashback in my Quidco account.

Im not a panic buyer -I plan and stock up to save money, hence why I started this thread to see what others were stocking up on!

I recently binned a pile of off stuff I bought during the COVID madness so no. I mean I need gin but otherwise.

IncessantNameChanger · 17/04/2026 19:21

I disagree. 2kg of pasta would do less than 4 meals in my house.

I normally try to be frugal but today I bought summer clothes. Not because I'm worried about war full out. But because life is shit and bleak. Got my first new winter coat in about ten years today. Red puffer Nordic waterproof below the knee for £5 in the charity shop. Bring on not being able to heat the house next year!

I did my costco shop of 80 toilet rolls before Easter. But see above re the pasta. We are not a family of 2 or even 4. I'm sure 500g of pasta and four toilet rolls lasts most people a year but not us!

The only thing I think I should really buy is a dehumidifier. As this winter might be very expensive, cold and Mouldy! More throws might also be bought. Ideally solar angels and a EV but can only really budget for some primark throws.

Winter coat: great buy! (esp red)

WRT humidifier - good thought but I think I would want to do a cost benefit analysis on outlay on humidifier + running costs v running costs of an oil filled radiator / central heating for an hour a day

As for the pasta - wholemeal ? Pasta should be smooth and silky...

It was just an example of waste.

Dymaxion · 17/04/2026 21:51

I have stockpiled physically, if food ran out tomorrow and I still had access to drinking water, well lets just say I would be fine for a couple of months Grin

LaughingCat · 17/04/2026 21:51

No - seen far too many of these panics in the last decade. I just can’t care anymore - if it’s not the Strait of Hormuz, it’d be something else.

But then I bulk buy as standard. Why cart home 9 rolls of unwieldy loo paper for a higher unit price from the supermarket, when you can buy 180 of them much cheaper and have them delivered? So there’s always a buffer on geopolitical crises here, I guess!

Hyacinth Bucket has entered the conversation.

Sirzy · 17/04/2026 21:53

Nope. The only change I have made is making sure I always have months back up of ds feeds and meds (rather than 2 weeks) the rest we will make do

mindutopia · 17/04/2026 21:54

Nope, the only thing I’m being more careful about is fuel. Not panic buying, but not getting super low. I have cancer and sometimes need to make emergency trips to the hospital, which is an hour away. Our local petrol station has generally not run out (others have), but the next closest one is about 10 miles away. I can’t be driving 20 miles just to fill up when I need to get to A&E quickly.

MelanzaneParmigiana · 17/04/2026 21:55

MissyPants · 17/04/2026 19:43

No, stop being ridiculous.

People who panic buy must have really small lives.
No.
I’ve better things to do.

Hedgehogforshort · 17/04/2026 22:01

I have planted out extra vegetables in my garden and have tubs of potato sets
Which i do not normally grow.

No, it’s being reported that the ships are moving today. Don’t add to the problem.

danglethedingle · 17/04/2026 22:07

I'm not, but we live in an area that regularly gets cut off by floods, so I've always got a fairly good stock of food and medication in. And its not unheard of for our local petrol station to run out of fuel either, so I never let the car go below half a tank.

PoppyFleur · 17/04/2026 22:13

Yes I’m buying extra and putting it straight into the food bank because I’m so fucking angry that deranged warmongering men are causing so much chaos. I can afford to buy extra and in a small way it is making me feel less useless.

I was hoping it would also make me feel less angry but that hasn’t happened yet (although this could also be due to menopause…).

RockNToll · 17/04/2026 22:14

No quite the opposite. I think now that ships are passing through Hormuz prices will come down, especially fuel. I'm buying as little as possible!

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 17/04/2026 22:16

I have started a veg patch properly this year.

The cost of fertiliser is going to be an issue. Lots of farms are going quit and prices will shoot up
