Are you stocking up on food/household items?

Have you started ‘stocking up’ on items you think might be rising sharply or might become harder to get hold of?
We know that there will be a knock on effect of ships being stuck in the Straight of Hormuz.
I read that food prices are expected to go up by 9% by Christmas. I can’t remember where I read it don’t shoot me but I thought at the time that it was a ‘proper’ source (as opposed to my mates from school on Facebook).
If you are stocking up -what are you buying?

#panicshopping makes things 1000x worse for everyone.

TheChosenTwo · 17/04/2026 18:13

I’m not, I just buy what we need as and when we need it (in the form of a weekly shop and then top ups).
I don’t really understand the thinking behind this though, prices are going to rise by 9% by Christmas according to your op - so what happens when people’s back stock is used up? Do you just go without forever because it’s more expensive? Is this a money saving issue?

You sound excited @DaisyDooley

In answer to your question…. Nothing!

unless you include the shopping splurge I had recently on Sezane

HoraceCope · 17/04/2026 18:15

chicken and pork i read
and
no i am not

Arlanymor · 17/04/2026 18:18

No because it’s selfish. Have people really learned nothing from Covid? Some people cannot afford to stock up at all - you’re depriving them. Some people live from hand to mouth each week - you’re depriving them. Some people don’t have easy access to be able to get to the shops so can only go at particular times - you’re depriving them. Need I go on..? It’s antisocial and makes life harder for the poorest in society.

youalright · 17/04/2026 18:19

No as I don't believe what's written on Facebook or in newspapers

You first OP 🤔

Meadowfinch · 17/04/2026 18:22

No, but I've stocked my greenhouse with salad plants, and planted the veggie patch with a good mix of veggies including tomato and courgette plants in pots.

I do it every year, just paying it a bit more attention this year.

Smellmyfart · 17/04/2026 18:22

No

DomesticArchaeologist · 17/04/2026 18:27

It’s not panic buying though if you’re deciding to get a little extra over time. A few extra tins of toms here and there.

Anyway to answer the question I haven’t as I usually have a fair bit on hand anyway.

Why does it need to be deleted?
Im not advocating going out and buying a truck load of tinned tomatoes!
Nor is it panic buying @Arlanymor @HaveYouHadYourBreak - it’s buying a bit extra.
@VeraWang Ive bought fairy washing powder as it’s the only one I can use due to DD allergies, plus some rice and coffee beans which are going up madly.

No.

The 2Kg bag of Wholemeal Pasta I bought when the shops started to empty in Covid panic buying still haunts me.

(no one needs wholemeal pasta...)

I am adaptable and have retained most of my common sense.

GivingUpFinally · 17/04/2026 18:37

Just the usual really. We won't stock anything extra but do tend to do a couple of big costco shops a year for canned goods, bottled water,, cleaning products and toilet roll. We have the storage space and it saves us a fortune every year. I won't be buying anything extra just doing our usual thing but will probably look like a panic buying nutter.

Until it happens we won't know what's in short supply. Pointless trying to keep ahead of it. And,, as others have said it makes it harder for some to get the basics.

youalright · 17/04/2026 18:38

Have you still got loo roll left over from covid op

Oh god no.
l didn’t panic buy any because I didn’t need any.
I always keep a good stock of loo roll in and batch buy it every quarter, or if I see a good offer.
I have IBS and have been like this for 30 years. My mates always knew where to come for loo roll !!
Thinking about it nearly everything with long shelf life (tins, cleaning products, pasta ) etc I buy in bulk when it’s on offer. No point paying full price.

That’s what I always do. If you can afford to, it saves a fortune.

I only ever buy pasta, Kleenex and coffee on offer.

I disagree. 2kg of pasta would do less than 4 meals in my house.

I normally try to be frugal but today I bought summer clothes. Not because I'm worried about war full out. But because life is shit and bleak. Got my first new winter coat in about ten years today. Red puffer Nordic waterproof below the knee for £5 in the charity shop. Bring on not being able to heat the house next year!

I did my costco shop of 80 toilet rolls before Easter. But see above re the pasta. We are not a family of 2 or even 4. I'm sure 500g of pasta and four toilet rolls lasts most people a year but not us!

The only thing I think I should really buy is a dehumidifier. As this winter might be very expensive, cold and Mouldy! More throws might also be bought. Ideally solar angels and a EV but can only really budget for some primark throws.

Sunshineandrainbow · 17/04/2026 19:25

I have added a 1kg bag of pasta and 4 tins of pulses to my shop this week.
Don't have room to store loads as house is tiny.

mondaytosunday · 17/04/2026 19:33

Nope.

Online Home Shop do really well priced blankets and throws that wash and last well too.

We've always got a small bit of extra in in case of snow or power cuts as we live quite rurally. We will just continue to keep that topped up if we use it.

Autumnlife · 17/04/2026 19:41

I shop at Costco as it quite close so buying in bulk is pretty normal for us. I buy washing detergent ,tins ,loo roll, meat, fish cereals, milk everything really. I have a chest freezer so I freeze all the fish and meat. I stock up all my kitchen cupboards and store other items in the garage.
I remember COVID and the panic buying I’d managed to do my normal Costco run without missing any items. A friend asked me to take her a week later and it was carnage shelves were almost empty.

MissyPants · 17/04/2026 19:43

No, stop being ridiculous.
