Are you stocking up on food/household items?

Have you started ‘stocking up’ on items you think might be rising sharply or might become harder to get hold of?
We know that there will be a knock on effect of ships being stuck in the Straight of Hormuz.
I read that food prices are expected to go up by 9% by Christmas. I can’t remember where I read it don’t shoot me but I thought at the time that it was a ‘proper’ source (as opposed to my mates from school on Facebook).
If you are stocking up -what are you buying?

This is what creates lack of products for everyone !!

Yep. Panic breeds panic.

Oh god no.
l didn’t panic buy any because I didn’t need any.
I always keep a good stock of loo roll in and batch buy it every quarter, or if I see a good offer.
I have IBS and have been like this for 30 years. My mates always knew where to come for loo roll !!
Thinking about it nearly everything with long shelf life (tins, cleaning products, pasta ) etc I buy in bulk when it’s on offer. No point paying full price.

I biy tins in bulk anyway.

Got loads of tuna.

Have loads of rice we don't eat much. Takes years to get through the stuff.

But im not specifically stockpiling cos of the fuel thing.

Just buying as normal.

Bought a load of drinks and snacks- planning a birthday party for tomorrow.

No. Unless the count the years worth of loo roll I bought recently from Who Gives a Crap because it was cheaper to buy it that way?

(Excellent looking roll if anyone's interested)

I buy that! 48 rolls at a time. I do it v calmly, no panic.

MagicMJ · 17/04/2026 20:10

I recently gained my pantry from being a toy cupboard to being able to actually use it as a pantry so I am taking advantage of being able to stock up on special offers and bulk buy deals. For no reason other than I hate when you run out of things and have to go to the shop, and when they aren't planned for they are more expensive, but if I buy 4 tubes of toothpaste when they are on a '2 for' offer costing me £6 or find a multi pack costs less on Amazon, it stops us paying £3 for one when we have to grab one.

NorthEastNancy · 17/04/2026 20:15

Pre-covid we never had much in. We bought fresh each week and only what we wanted for that week

I started batch cooking and meal planning and it's saved us a fortune

Dh included a pantry in our kitchen extension and now we keep stuff in. Not a stock pile but more than we did.

For example I've cooked a big pot of bolognaise today. Used 3 cartons of pasata. I like to keep 6 in so I'll replace them tomorrow when I go shopping. Next week I'll make a pan of curry so will use them!

I might start keeping 7 or 8 in if it looks like the supermarkets go mad again but only of stuff we use.

I opened a big packet of spaghetti. It'll do for 2 more meals for us all but I added it to Alexa as soon as I opened it. Might go wild and get 2!

PILEALLTHEPILLSONTHEFLOOR · 17/04/2026 20:15

A looooot more shoplifting is gonna start happening if they keep messing with food prices.

No.

The 2Kg bag of Wholemeal Pasta I bought when the shops started to empty in Covid panic buying still haunts me.

(no one needs wholemeal pasta...)

I am adaptable and have retained most of my common sense.

I’ve bought wholemeal pasta for about 15 years!

I only just discovered it. It came up as an offer on Facebook and I thought I may as well. Definitely going to buy it again though and definitely going to buy a year's worth again as it's much cheaper.

But yes, not in a panic buying way, just in a saving money way!

OdeToTheNorthWestWind · 17/04/2026 20:30

No I don't.

During Covid I volunteered in a business that supported the local food bank. We had great difficulty collecting donations because of people hoarding food and creating shortages but, once the lock downs were over, we started receiving large amounts of opened or out of date foods that could not be donated due to health regulations.

The selfishness of some people ultimately led to huge amounts of waste.

GentleSheep · 17/04/2026 20:36

I've been prepping for the past 10 years and have increased a little more over the past 2 months, so yes, but not in a 'go out and buy 100L of water' sort of way. Makes sense to be prepared in case of emergencies, I have a buffer.

WhitegreeNcandle · 17/04/2026 20:36

Nope. I’m not. I have planted extra veg in the patch though.

I do also think we as a country are not taking the NFU seriously enough. Farmers are really worried about this. As are farmers in other countries.

Panic buying is not the way forwards.

BTW it’s not necessarily food shortages due to oil. It’s the gas that’s used to stun animals and in processing. More info here. It’s often also in the news as the NFU try to get the government to listen. Opening Redcar is a big win. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy812gj50gvo?app-referrer=search

CottageGate · 17/04/2026 21:15

Having seen food waste bins bursting with loaves of bread still in their plastic bags after covid you think we'd have learned our lesson with this.

Yes, it’s not just oil. It’s CO2, gas, fertilizer etc.
Nobody realised how much sunflower oil would go up when Ukraine was invaded.
I’m interested in the who gives a crap loo roll though @sallymonella . How do 48 rolls last a year??
Can I just reiterate I’m NOT condoning or doing any panic buying.
I always keep a good larder and replace as and when I use.
I buy rice in 10/20kg sacks as I find it cheaper and rice lasts forever.
I buy pasta when it’s on offer - so when Tesco have de cecco spaghetti on offer I’ll buy half a dozen packs as it’s the only spaghetti we like.
I buy coffee beans in 6x1kg as it’s cheaper - and coffee has gone up by 60% in the last year.

I just wondered if people were concerned about the food inflation which is coming and what people were buying.
Reporting this thread to MNHQ and treating me as if I bought every sodding loo roll is ridiculous.

Is anybody advocating buying multiple loaves of bread??

This is panic buying, the current situation is causing you to be anxious and fearful and want to stock up.

stockpiling as a result of a crisis/disaster is panic buying when everyone does the same thing.

No, panic buying is buying excessive quantities out of fear of shortages (ironically often causing the shortages).

Buying 6 packs of de cecco pasta when it’s on offer is not panic buying ffs.

lovealieinortwo · 17/04/2026 21:22

People just tell themselves that to make them feel better but it’s is panic buying because the shops will run out if everyone all goes out and buys extra de cecco pasta.

I’m certainly not anxious or fearful
I just like to plan ahead and save money.
If i can buy 6 months of coffee beans ( for example) and save myself £50 -60 I’m going to do it! If l do that with 4 things we use a lot I’ll save £200 which is two weeks shopping (at current prices! ).

But that’s exactly what happens when things are on offer. The shop runs out of that item!

rumred · 17/04/2026 21:28

@DaisyDooley completely reasonable question.
I'm buying extra peanut butter and similar stuff with good shelf life. My pension is small so I'm not waiting to see what happens, if prices soar I have a buffer, if not I've got a well stocked pantry.

Yes - certain things might become harder to get hold of.
That’s not being anxious - that’s simply the way things work so surely it’s better to be prepared?
Bit like I always have cash in the house so when Russia/China/Korea/Weird kid round the corner bugger up card payments I’ll be able to buy stuff.
