I’m back from the rock and roll sweaty, loud and good fun. Also visited the grandpup on the way - DD has just acquired am 8 week old whippet which provides the cutest tax I’ve ever paid.

Even as an out and out cat person I have to admit that that is an exceptionally cute puppy 😁

He is far from ideal but he is not Orban, that's what I read from Hungarian people.

I think time will tell. If he follows through with his electoral promises this should be really good for Hungary and Europe. Keeping my fingers crossed.

If he did, how would we know ? Which UK media outlet would you trust to report accurately ?

No, me neither.

Notonthestairs · 13/04/2026 10:47

Magyar can start with the EU-Ukraine money.

Oh what a cutie @cardibach. Whippets are lovely.

I love all sight hounds. Gorgeous dogs!

placemats · 13/04/2026 11:32

Hands up anybody who wants a national inquiry costing millions into the Boris wave?

Anyone?

DuncinToffee · 13/04/2026 11:34

Is that Reform's latest folly?

Zia Yusef mentioned it at the press conference today. Farage declared that the UK voted to leave the EU by a large margin.

Deluded.

DuncinToffee · 13/04/2026 11:45

I have just read Peter Walker's thread on bsky, that leaflet is quite racist.

I read that too. Yusuf said that after Brexit immigration moved from EU countries to Non EU countries - I mean fucks sakes, yes. That was their plan - Global Britain etc.

placemats · 13/04/2026 11:50

Yes people on skilled workers visas have a positive fiscal input towards the economy.

placemats · 13/04/2026 11:52

My nephew's wife is a skilled worker and is very much in demand for her services. She's a high tax payer. She's non EU.

cardibach · 13/04/2026 11:52

Apparently Yusuf is perplexed that immigration went from mainly EU to mainly non-EU. I wonder why that was? 🙄
Remember not to call them stupid though.

Edit : cross post @Notonthestairs

Make your mind up Nigel!
Daily Mail 8 June 2016 stated:
“More black people will be allowed into Britain if we leave the EU and immigration will become a ‘non-issue’, says Nigel Farage.
Farage claimed that Britain had:“been stupid to turn our backs on the Commonwealth in favour of EU membership.”

More black people will come to Britain if we leave the EU, says Farage

Ukip leader Nigel Farage (pictured on ITV's GMB this morning) said Brexit will help immigration become a 'non-issue' in the UK because it would allow us to cut net migration to under 50,000.

Notonthestairs · 13/04/2026 12:04

Sam Bright has an article on Substack which lists Farage's pro immigration suggestions before Brexit - "Has farage forgotten his own immigration promises?"

Again they think we have the memory of goldfish.

So 70 years on, Hungary breaks free ... again

Edited

I recall this being pointed out ahead of the vote many times, with prediction that young mobile EU citizens who tended to house share & leave after a few years would be replaced by non EU nationals who tend to bring families and stay longer.

…. but of course all the leavers knew better!

really noticeable in London now in bars and hotels the change in the nationality.

I hope so & that the new government are able to undo at least some of the damage another bonus would be funds cut off for some of the fuckwits here in the U.K.

Would anyone else here agree with me that the BBC has been sanewashing Trump his entire presidency ?

I think every news channel/media that has presented edited clips of Trump speaking is guilty of sanewashing.

Show every bloody second of the interviews in all their ridiculousness & madness and reveal his nature.

I looked on the website to catch up - they’ve washed his rants re the Pope considerably in my view. And other stuff but that just caught my eye as very blatant, as I’d (unhappily) just seen the actual post Trump made.

Adding in that maybe they’ve been told to due to that litigation?

If this was the only subject they were careful about editing, I might agree.

It's just one of the less subtle.

I mean i doesn't matter to me as I gave up on the BBC a long time ago. However it's an interesting power to keep some of Trumps more egregious batshittery out of the headlines if you trust the BBC for news.

And to save a post responding to the permadim, not liking the BBC does not mean I automatically trust everything else. Or indeed anything else. Everything gets the same scrutiny as best I can.

Right that’s useful thank you - I don’t use it much - just a look at the biggest headlines or F1 results usually - but even typing this I have realised I have used their site more during the Iran stuff, so actually I did ought to think a bit harder and be more aware.

Dreadful propagandering (not a word) for other countries - just why?

I do actually find these threads most informative about the detail I’m interested in with good links too - although I appreciate that’s limited and perhaps even an echo (edited sp) chamber to an extent - I also appreciate this is debate and not instruction or facts writ in stone of course.

To add I don’t care for the BBC in general (except David Attenborough’s stuff) and can’t watch it as I refuse to buy a license - and didn’t have a tv lol - so this just now confirms my dislike - I own to hypocritically making an exception for their radio dramas though and am doing so right now.
