Same people who voted to slice 8% off GDP now worrying about EU £ contributions?
Fucks sakes.

Very carefully studied avoidance of providing any benefits of Brexit, you notice.

Ultimately - and the Brexiteers knew this in 2016 - selling rejoin the EU will be a piece of piss ... "Do you want to be better off or do you want to continue getting poorer ?". In fact that could be the referendum question for the Brexit 2.0 referendum Farage will call for.

placemats · 14/04/2026 15:30

Yes/No on the 2016 referendum was a disgrace. "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?".

It should have have been at least the other way round.

"Should the United Kingdom leave the European Union or remain a member of the European Union?"

SerendipityJane · 14/04/2026 15:32

Yes/No on the 2016 referendum was a disgrace. "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?".

What's done is done.

However it set a precedent for a referendum with the equally binary question

"Would you like to be better off ?"

  • yes
  • no
placemats · 14/04/2026 16:11

So the question should have been

Would you like to be worse off?

Yes No

Well in retrospect it would have been no less accurate than the original.

However, a simple binary referendum would crush a certain N. Farage. Even in his coat of BBC proof armour he'd never be able to decry a simple question referendum like wot he got put on the 2016 one.

Also he'd have to explain all the lies behind "Do you want to be better off ?" to a generation who can remember when they were ... and what caused that to change.

Assuming Farage is the foe of the future. Maybe not.

placemats · 14/04/2026 16:29

Millions of people understood No regarding the less well off option and not just in monetary costs. Happiness is key to well being. Simple and effective.

Trump is having another go at the UK

Trump: "Europe is desperate for Energy, and yet UK refuses to open North Sea Oil, one of the greatest fields in the World. Tragic!!! ... UK, which is better situated on North Sea for purposes of energy than Norway, should, DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!! It is crazy that they don’t… AND, NO MORE WINDMILLS!"

Deflecting from the shitstorm he’s brought on the global economy.

Those BP shares I bought last week look a good bet now.

DuncinToffee · 14/04/2026 18:05

The Dutch king and queen visited Trump, I hope they brought him some tacky nice windmill souvenirs

Some special brownies might make him feel more chilled and better more well disposed to the rest of the world.

DuncinToffee · 14/04/2026 18:17

We have speculaas biscuits in the shape of windmills

Oh, no, he'd be rambling and talking shit... THINK OF THE SUPERLATIVES!!! 🫨

countrygirl99 · 14/04/2026 18:28

But doped up rambling might make more sense than his usual 🤣

Reeves in the FT

“To start a conflict without being clear what the objectives are and not being clear about how you are going to get out of it, I do think that is a folly and it is one that is affecting families here in the UK but also families in the US and around the world.”

And the Mirror

Rachel Reeves has dubbed the US-Israeli war in Iran as “folly”.

The chancellor said “no sensible person” supported the Iranian regime but directly criticises Washington for its lack of strategic aims.

“This is a war that we did not start. It was a war that we did not want. I feel very frustrated and angry that the US went into this war without a clear exit plan, without a clear idea of what they were trying to achieve,”

Trying to make the British/Europeans be a bit grateful for a recession.

Quite a bit of that kind of chat floating around from some pro Iran war posters who claim it will only be a mild recession and worth it.

Its bollocks. They just got themselves (and the rest of the world) in to a war without an exit plan.

DuncinToffee · 14/04/2026 22:20

Yes I have seen that too

Llttledrummergirls · 14/04/2026 22:42

Holding the world to ransom, treating allies as disposable, destroying the world economy and then behaving as though we should be grateful.

Fuck that shit. This bully boy will only continue to escalate until he is told in no uncertain terms to back the fuck off. I would prefer it to come from the Democratic countries as if it comes from China it leaves us beholden, but I have a feeling that it will be China that ends this shit.

I have a 2 point agreement plan they could discuss:

America and Israel stop bombing other countries, get back behind their borders and stop meddling. They pay for the damage they have done.

Iran allows free transit through the strait, agrees to be monitored again on nuclear development and stops funding terrorism worldwide.

Just grow the fuck up.

MsJinks · 15/04/2026 05:58

Parliament has been debating the new Police and Crime Bill - this includes the police right to consider the ‘cumulative effect’ of protests/ counter protests - in my view another step along the way of restricting overall rights to protest - several Labour backbenchers have this view as well.

I didn’t even realise this was going through until told at a meeting - obviously other news is quite distracting at the minute but I should try and keep an eye on what’s happening domestically as well I think.

cardibach · 15/04/2026 12:15

That does seem an odd and ill advised move @MsJinks .Very hard to defend or rationalise.

placemats · 15/04/2026 12:55

In addition to the above, it's clear that Reform UK is very happy to waste public money on unsuitable candidates. These by elections cost thousands of public money and are disruptive to local governance. Staffordshire is particularly bad.

eta the conclusion can only be that picking unsuitable people is a design to interrupt the flow of local government

Edited

Or maybe only unsuitable people are interested in standing for Reform?

interesting idea this though - and scary.
