Has anyone else noticed the huge numbers of people who believe it is made up, cgi, actors etc. My fb feed is full of it..add in the flat earthers. Im used to my conspiracy theorist pal coming out with it but this blows my mind that its on such a huge scale. I can't get my head round why it would be made up, what purpose would it serve?

As a general rule, conspiracy theories tend to appeal to the paranoid, the poorly educated, the desperately ill-informed and/or those who have a desperate need to assuage their inferiority complex. Believing in a conspiracy theory makes someone feel like they've got secret knowledge that puts them at a higher level of intellect than the "sheeple" who believe stuff that's merely got a broad and deep factual basis to support it.

With respect, that's not strictly true. There was a programme I listened to on the radio with a psychologist who said intelligent people are just as likely to believe a conspiracy theory and they tend to rationalise their beliefs more strongly to themselves because of their intelligence.

Here's a comprehensive debunking of the 'glass of water looked wrong in space' conspiracy.

https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/news/china-space-glass-water-debunk

It's quite interesting how many conspiracy theories work by presenting people with a photo or a situation and then saying 'this looks wrong, doesn't it?' No stars in the moon photos, flag flying in lack of gravity etc. People go with the 'it looks wrong therefore it is wrong' explanation offered to them rather than thinking critically around the problem.

Wow that was really interesting thank you! I also didnt realise that China had landed something on the moon

My usual comments to pal are, what purpose does it serve lying to whole populations and what do you intend to do about it? Usually its some muttered comment about 'controlling ' us, how does it control us? We will still get up tomorrow, go to work, go home , walk dogs, have tea, watch tv, go to bed.
I did ask when his research paper with evidence is being published as he is so certain.

Usually the answer to the 'but why would they bother to mislead everyone' question ends up in some version of 'but that's whst they want you to think!'

See also: aren't they too stupid to be able to mislead everyone.

I am completely dumbfounded by conspiracy theorists and quite frankly think their views are ridiculous, however I know a number of highly educated and successful people who are conspiracy theorists so being "poorly educated" doesn't apply here.

What I find fascinating is they went all that way and didn't get off at the moon? Surely they could've brought a few lumps of it back, it's worth a fortune that stuff

"Get off at the moon?"
It's not a bus stop 😂

That's why I said "and/or". I'm not saying that everyone who is a conspiracy theorist is poorly educated. They could instead be paranoid or dealing with an inferiority complex.

Of course there are a whole host of people sitting at computers who barely leave the screen never mind the house to get validation by attempting to debunk Artemis II.

Perhaps we could help them out and preempt Artemis III debunking and write out their dribble for them? Then they can return their attentions back to lizard people and red pills.

frozendaisy · 12/04/2026 12:04

If they are so fucking good at uncovering the truth why don’t they do something actually useful? Like get some of Epstein’s male friends thrown in jail.

Odd isn’t it, stuff that should be proven of powerful rich men never gets exposed.

I am in awe of the astronauts purely because they have to be whizzes at all science things, not vomit uncontrollably or pass out, be super fit AND be media personalities. I would be exhausted just having to do one live stream in a week.

Imagine getting parachuted into the ocean from space and not staggering out, vomiting and shouting "don't fucking look me, you fucks!!"

I think they must be psychopaths.

There's a lot of bullshit around. Generally, information is becoming unreliable and as AI and bots continue churning out nonsense more and more people will have disbelief as a default reaction to any information they receive and information dissemination will be meaningless. Already we're seeing "lived experience" touted as some kind of gold standard of information gathering - because we're already tilting towards that being the only thing whose truth we can categorically ascertain. Of course this means that everyone will have a narrow pejorative viewpoint and disagree with everyone else. And then democracy will be dead.

Or, we can switch off the internet.
