Do you wear dresses or shorts on holiday in a hot country during the day.

I see a few photos of ladies wearing lovely dresses while they are on holiday.
I'm a shorts wearer. I leave the dresses for the evening.
What do you wear.

Prefer dresses. I feel very self conscious in shorts

museumum · 08/04/2026 17:03

I wear dresses in cities but shorts everywhere else. A bit like here, i'm a shorts person for the garden or beach or going for a stroll in the woods but wouldn't wear them into the city centre.

1000StrawberryLollies · 08/04/2026 17:07

I hate shorts. I have some, and I would sometimes wear them on the beach, but I much prefer loose, lightweight trousers (or cropped ones). I sometimes wear dresses or skirts, but not for walking around a lot.

Cropped linen trousers.

Shorts on the beach but not in a town or city.
Sometimes a dress.

Coldthuses · 08/04/2026 17:16

I prefer long loose trousers. Still cool and I don't worry about suncream or insect bites.

whirlyhead · 08/04/2026 17:17

I live in Spain and I wear both. I’ll happily wear shorts in the evening. It’s very casual where I live but when going out I normally wear a dress as they’re cooler.

EmbarrassmentLovesCompany · 08/04/2026 17:18

Loose, lightweight, trousers here.
Saves a vast amount of suncrram application!

Devilsmommy · 08/04/2026 17:19

I'm going abroad for the first time this year and I packed shorts and dresses. I think it's ok to wear either really though I guess the nicer dresses would be more evening wear

JoyinRepetition · 08/04/2026 17:20

Dresses. In all weathers and seasons I love them. You should see my Vinted orders and favourites!

TheCurious0range · 08/04/2026 17:21

Both depends what I'll be doing that day, hiking, shorts, gallery and lunch maybe a dress

Catcatcatcatcat · 08/04/2026 17:22

I tend to wear shorts in the day and cropped trousers in the evening. I go on a lot of city breaks and never hit the beach so my holidays might be different to some other posters.

I wear dresses a lot for work (legal) so that might be why I avoid them on holidays!

pizzaHeart · 08/04/2026 17:22

Shorts but my holidays are very casual.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 08/04/2026 17:22

Shorts look silly on me. I’m tall with long legs. I’d rather wear a casual dress.

Sowhat1976 · 08/04/2026 17:23

I wear linen trousers, long sleeve cotton top and a hat. I hate to burn. I also don't sit directly in the sun.

SuitcaseAndSecrets · 08/04/2026 17:24

Dresses.. shorts are too " hot" around the waist.. l go abroad a lot.. always day dresses then a tad more dressy for evening.

APurpleSquirrel · 08/04/2026 17:30

Both - I’ll wear dresses with cropped leggings or chub run shorts underneath or jean shorts/cropped jeans or cropped trousers depending on the activity/weather.

Girasoli · 08/04/2026 17:59

I prefer dresses unless I am going hiking. Depending on where i hike I might wear leggings rather than shorts as it can be cold on top of mountains.

weegiemum · 08/04/2026 18:02

I have awful scarring on one of my legs, from a badly broken ankle and then a skin infection that caused sepsis. So I wear either long, loose trousers or a lightweight maxi dress. Dresses more through the day. I save £££ on suncream!!

LastHotel · 08/04/2026 18:04

Dresses, skirts or loose trousers. I would never wear shorts. I don’t have any.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/04/2026 18:05

I have a couple of long, loose, cotton dresses, but mostly it’ll be long, loose trousers in cotton or a cotton/linen mix, and cotton tops. What I won’t wear is anything tight or made of synthetic material. I don’t do shorts any more.

Rockchick01 · 08/04/2026 18:06

if it’s really warm I’ll wear shorts. I used to be very self conscious of my legs as I have thunder thighs then I just thought sod it.

Listlostlast · 08/04/2026 18:07

Both, but probably more dresses than shorts. Same as at home, I don’t have a special ‘holiday’ wardrobe!

Userengage · 08/04/2026 18:11

Either and if it’s hot here I’ll also wear either.

ThatWaryLimePeer · 08/04/2026 18:13

Dresses and more lately long or three quarter length lightweight trousers/culottes.

notacooldad · 08/04/2026 18:16

Dresses.
I haven't got any shorts.
