Do you wear dresses or shorts on holiday in a hot country during the day.

I see a few photos of ladies wearing lovely dresses while they are on holiday.
I'm a shorts wearer. I leave the dresses for the evening.
What do you wear.

I never wear dresses. Always trousers

EmpressaurusKitty · 08/04/2026 18:20

Cropped linen or cotton trousers for me too.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 08/04/2026 18:21

If I'm having a beach day I'll wear a Breakfast Dress (™) which will double as a beach cover up. If I'm sightseeing I'll wear shorts or a skort. Always dresses in the evening. I ❤️ dresses.

Warm weather city breaks will be cropped trousers in the day and if I'm travelling light, I might change into a smarter top, otherwise a dress.

Depends what I’m doing. If I’m wafting around an historical town, I like to out in a maxi dress. If I’m walking through the countryside, then shorts.

socks1107 · 08/04/2026 18:24

Shorts for a beach type holiday with days out but a city is always dresses or linen trousers.

JumpinJehoshaphat · 08/04/2026 18:24

Depends on the type of holiday. If I’m out and about sightseeing, short denim shorts (I have decent legs). If I’m just wandering somewhere for lunch I might wear a dress, long or short.

If I’m just in a hotel, a beach cover up in the restaurants.

Bombombomtralala · 08/04/2026 18:24

Mostly dresses but both.

7238SM · 08/04/2026 18:26

When I was thinner, I'd sometimes wear a skirt but even then, rarely found a flattering dress.

I'm now larger, so wear linen trousers or 3/4 capri type trousers. Occasionally culottes. It also depends on the holiday destination too- Gulf states or Northern Africa like Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia (not that I ever return) I'd never wear shorts!

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/04/2026 18:40

Skirts for me. I take a variety of t shirts with me because I get my dinner down me to enable a lot of different outfits.

TheFairyCaravan · 08/04/2026 18:41

Mostly dresses. It’s easier to change a wet a pair of bikini bottoms under a dress.

NeedWineNow · 08/04/2026 18:45

As a rule I prefer dresses, knee length during the day and a maxi for the evening, or linen trousers (full length or cropped). I’ve got a couple of pairs of pull on shorts and play suits which I wear on beach holidays, but only for going to the beach or pool, never out in the evening.

SuperMarioToadPrincessPeach · 08/04/2026 19:38

Dresses, or lightweight trousers. I hate shorts.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/04/2026 19:53

Long dresses. They're cooler than bare legs with the sun on them and I've never been a fan of risking sunburn on the backs of my knees or thighs.

TwistedWonder · 08/04/2026 19:54

Dresses always. Don’t think I’ve worn shorts since I was at primary school

Echobelly · 08/04/2026 19:56

I wear a mix of shorts/t-shirts and dresses. I don't change in the evening other than maybe adding a cardigan/light jacket if it cools down.

Jellybelly80 · 08/04/2026 19:57

Shorts only on the beach or at the pool.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 08/04/2026 19:57

Both, depending on what I'm doing. Shorts for when I'm active, dresses otherwise.

ChocolateBasket · 08/04/2026 19:58

Depends on the wind.

zantez · 08/04/2026 20:02

I'm with the loose very light fabric trousers group! I've tried shorts and dresses and neither work for me. Occasionally a dress at night when it cools down a lot but it has to be mid calf length and loose. I know there are ways to help chub rub, but there's nothing worse than that in a dress. No way am I wearing long leg parachutes under a dress, or smearing on some anti chafe cream to avoid that. Defeats the whole purpose of trying to stay cool IMO!

Shorts are out for me. I look OK in them but never ever "feel" right. I look down and see a truncated leg or something. Oh how we all differ.

The loose light trousers are just great (for me...), as others have said they lessen the bug bites AND they hide my prominent veins too.

MinnieMountain · 08/04/2026 20:03

Dresses, including when hiking. I've got one pair of shorts in case of going to scrambley places.

Waitingfordoggo · 08/04/2026 20:04

Depends on the activity. A dress if I’m going for a lazy lunch. Shorts for hiking or beach. I do also like those thin floaty trousers you get in Spanish markets- I wear those a lot when I’m in a hot country.

tinytemper66 · 08/04/2026 20:05

Usually dresses but wear those long shorts underneath. Had a bad experience in Rome once when my legs rubbed together and they bLed! I walked nearly 30k steps
in the. 30°+ heat!

TheTulipsAreOut · 08/04/2026 20:05

pizzaHeart · 08/04/2026 17:22

Shorts but my holidays are very casual.

I'm the same.

i look like a lampshade in dresses. Haven't owned one in years!

shorts or light/cropped trousers.

Mochudubh · 08/04/2026 20:05

Shorts. I'm an odd shape so something that fits me on top doesn't on the bottom and vice-versa. I may wear a skirt with a top in the evening but never a dress.

ETA: Pretty much what @TheTulipsAreOut said.

greenteaandlimes · 08/04/2026 20:08

Dresses - always! Unless I’m doing something physical like camping or hiking, then shorts. But for most things, summer dresses - bliss!!!
