Harris is toxic to many people. She's the wrong colour, she's no demagogue, and her laugh is off putting. Just a hint of her running will put some democrats off voting.

eta and she's female.

walllaw · 11/04/2026 12:31

I voted for her very happily last time, would be very unhappy with it this time because it would tell me the Dems just do not understand that they need a fresh chapter. But... I hope there's a bruising primary because we need it. If she were to emerge the winner from that, I guess I would feel differently.

I can guarantee you, though, that my millennial/gen z DCs who dutifully voted Biden then Harris would be extremely unimpressed.

Wipeywipey · 11/04/2026 12:45

Depressing that the run around on the Epstein file was more damaging to news of Trump being a geriatric cuck rather than actively involved in a people smuggling peadophile ring. I remember seeing so many seemingly added sentences in stories about Trump being paranoid Epstein was "poaching staff" - has a whole new angle now.

If his supporters are more bruised by a cuck than a pedo, it really does show the low bar men set these days.

Harris is still unable to deliver clear, concise messaging on what she stands for as far as I can tell.

The Dems will need a firebrand that can communicate on point and sadly she doesn’t match up.

I also think her defeat will be a millstone.

Talkinpeace · 11/04/2026 13:21

Just catching up with you all.
@walllaw You have written what I am thinking.

As an NYC voter my views get added into the Blue pile
but I will struggle to summon up the energy to register to vote
if the Dems do not wake up and smell the coffee.

A parade of geriatrics is NOT a good look.
Kamala lost because she was dire.
The Dem HQ need to draw up a shortlist of three or four under 55's and start testing them on the media
and
YYYYYY
to grabbing the media and caling out the TSA mess
the arrogant apathy of ALL US elected representatives is utterly shocking.

Why are the Dems not holding the orange one to account on the steps of the Capitol every single day?

Because they are the other arse cheek in this democracy.

Can anyone find an article, list, or chart looking at promised foreign investment into the US as a result of Trump's tariff spree and actual investment now that the global economy is shrinking with collateral damage from the Iran war?
IIRC, South Korea cancelled a promised 5B investment?

I can only find investment figures for Q4 2025

He just promised investment to Hungary if Orban wins.

Back now, Was suspended. Emailed HQ, they said suspended in error. Someone has been having a field day with the report button on an "other thread", but I am sure that is not connected at all.... if one applies Trumpian logic that is :-)

Oh, he did more than promise. Didn't he say something along the lines of using all the power/resources of the great, bigly, mighty, golden USA to support Hungary under Orban?

I'm currently on holiday in Greece. It's Greek Easter this weekend and the tradition is that at midnight everyone celebrates the Resurrection of Christ. One of the things they do is burn an effigy of Judas.

We stopped off at a remote mountain village and found the residents making preparations for the festivities. Judas does not normally have blond hair. So I asked, and yes, this is Trump. Seems like disgust for him reaches far and wide.

This just popped up and this is what I have been reflecting on, and discussing with my contacts in the ME. What next for US allies when the US becomes unreliable?

Orban has the support of Trump and Putin. Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition and currently holding a significant lead over Orban in the polls, is pro-European.

walllaw · 10/04/2026 23:42

Yup. It's true, and yes, it can.

But I've voted in every election since I was old enough to vote, including the piddly little ones that most people don't turn out for. I've given time and lots of money to candidates and been a passionate defender and supporter of the party over the years, but I'm fed up with the toothlessness.

If Chuck Schumer, my senator, whose office I call and email with some regularity, can't be bothered to actually stir himself, why should I vote him back in again? (Although, please, God, make him retire.) If the reps are going to do things like elect Jerry Connolly, 79 with advanced cancer, to leadership over AOC; and refuse to endorse the NY mayoral candidate that their own voters turned to democratically select in a primary; and fail to nurture solid prospects for the Democratic senatorial seat in Maine, which could be vital for them if they want to take the senate, leaving voters to choose between a guy with a nazi tattoo and an 80 year old, not hugely popular governor, I don't see much hope for the future with them.

Just as an example, last week, when airports were a disaster because TSA agents weren't being paid, ICE was standing around in airports scratching their balls, why wasn't every Democratic senator and congressperson, back home on spring break, standing out there in front of their local airport talking to the media and constituents? Why weren't they saying, this administration did this? They're flying around in grafted Qatari jets and using your tax money to fund this war. If they can't even show any teeth there, why should I believe they have what it takes to fix things?

I've never felt that way before. But the world is a different place than it was two years ago, and if they can't find some fight and the understanding of that, they deserve to lose.

Trust me, I get your frustration with the party. I'm frustrated too.

But not voting and (potentially) allowing the GOP even more power by default is like burning your house down because it needs work and you have a rodent infestation. No, you keep the house and start working on repairs. And working hard to get the damn rats out.

We've seen the results of 'not voting' in 2016 and 2024. I agree, and paraphrasing JFK, it's time for the torch to be passed to a new generation. But how is that going to happen if people aren't voting to keep the party 'in'? And then getting involved in pushing candidates they can support by working within the party to get that candidate's message out to the members? That's how 'new generation' people like AOC and Pete Buttigieg got elected. The best way to change a system is to work from within, not turn your back on it.

Those who remember the Brexit threads will remember the frustration of dealing with people who claimed to be against Brexit, but who could not possibly bring themselves to vote anything but Conservative. Either "because they know what a woman is" or "but Jeremy Corbyn".

Their alleged thinking (not a word I would use for allowing fresh air to pass from one earhole to the other uninterrupted by any energy) was that the Tories would be forced to bow to popular opinion and get a good Brexit.

Whilst I am quite happy to believe there really are people that stupid (or even worse) in the world, I was always slightly suspicious that they all managed to find their way to that thread on that day.

Precisely

Then again Labour are still sitting on the EHRC guidance
and have not managed to get us back into Europe !

Short but excellent article, thank you. I can see China getting in there the minute the word 'infrastructure' is mouthed. But as it's already increased its sphere of influence (Africa, Caribbean and South America) can the US allow this to happen? Can India step in?

I'm now starting to see the ramifications of this war in a much wider geopolitical sense.

The Green Party and Reform won't be getting us back into Europe - NATO and ECHR respectively.
