I know nowt about Uranium processing. I I know is ore at one end, fuel rod or bomb at the other.

Me nether I just know that the processed product was being stored as a gas in multiple containers and trying to be generous in interpreting Trumps understanding of the situation - not spoil your witticism

Post the bombing of Fowdor last June there were [thankfully] no big clouds of highly radioactive gas detected over northern Iran or surrounding countries - and no apparent seepage of gas since - the assumption being that it had safely been entombed deep underground and could not be easily be moved/used/hidden elsewhere

So Netanyahu's bright idea yesterday that it should now be removed from Iran as a ceasefire condition away from it's highly surveilled safe place is just deliberate preposterous shit stirring - bombing the site made it difficult/?impossible to move not just for Iran but for anyone

Of course it could have have been moved by negotiation but Netanyahu [and Trump] it seems had insufficient patience for that - and there's no glory in quietly getting on with a dull frustrating long drawn out process

Sorry to be-labour a minor point Smile

Trump has opened Pandora's box and is trying to put the contents back in and shut the lid. But it is not happening.
He has led the world to a new kind of hell and I am very worried this is going to rage long term, instead of getting back into that box. I hope Pakistan talks can step on the lid and help to shut it down. But Netanyahu is not included in the talks..... a piece is missing. Trump needs to either keep hold of Netanyahu, for real, or include him in the talks.

Trump is beyond stupid, because all intelligence US had in the past pointed to exactly what is happening! Up to this point. Attempts to take Iran by land are predicted to be a bloodbath. So let's hope they can sort something.

I was thinking earlier that if someone got the top experts on running a war together to do a guide on how to utterly and completely NOT run a war, condense that guide into a summary, put it on 4 page animated PPT with simple words and cartoon characters, show it to him, and say " DO IT EXACTLY THIS WAY"..... things would be much better than today. BECAUSE HE WOULD FUCK THAT UP TOO.

Great info thanks. I done chemistry as part of Mech eng materials science, so just the basics really.

I never understood isotopes either. So when folk talk about centrifuges and that, I have no idea. I just know it's difficult and takes a long time. Along the lines of that Madame Curie film. Years of processing to get a stain of radium.

Nuclear dust. My theory is that Trump thinks it's the same dust as in Pullman's trilogy. As he doesn't read himself, he didn't understand what it is an analogy for, but he remembered the word.

Totally agree. It's not something I knew. Probably read about it yonks ago etc, but as of up to an hour or so ago, it was not in my ol' noggin.

And thanks to @Efacsen doing an informative post, it spurred me to look it up. I have the basics of the process now. And interestingly, when I am on "other threads", some posters give the impression of being knowledgeable on 60% enrichment being nuke level. But guess what... its not. It's above 90% for nukes.

countrygirl99 · 09/04/2026 08:47

Why would Iran agree for the US or Israel to remove any enhanced uranium when both already have nuclear capability and have threatened Iran with total destruction? It's a bit like me giving an aggressive intruder the key to our gun cabinet (only clays are at risk from our household) and trusting them not to shoot me.

The American leadership are a bunch of lying bastards who wouldn't know how to lie straight in a bed!

If they aren't threatening and bombing countries, they are winging about how hard done by they are. They have no credibility are are j6st sucking energy and life out of the world.

The more they speak, the worse they get and it is ridiculous that anyone could believe anything they say at this point.

I can highly recommend newsnight tonight for calling them on their bullshit. Watching the pennies drop as they try to defend Trumps threat of genocide was interesting. Apparently he writes shit to appear strong, but he has no intention of carrying it out and we should ignore what he says. But when it was pointed out that this is stupidly weak leadership, all he could do was sit there. They really are a bunch of fuckwits.

Apologies, I missed his name but tonight's program is a good watch.

April is beginning to feel like it's going to be a long month.

This part of @Llttledrummergirls post saying that Trump and his administration are "just sucking energy and life out of the world." resonated with me bigly.

The world deserves better.

TL;DR ?

I have no respect for any institution that can allow this to happen. Fuck the US, and fuck it's constitution. No one did this to the US.

Yup. I think the best descriptive phrase I have heard to Trump is resource vampire. He just sucks up every resource he can, and feeds from it.

I used to work for a guy like that (but he was clever unlike Trump). I was a design engineer under him and it was soul destroying. He wanted ALL the deign folk working on his stuff, and the techs, the QA folk, metrology. And most of it was pointless stuff. Made no difference, cos it was all about HIM. The company eventually gave him a MASSIVE pay off, because he started to suck in production, HR, IT accounts...... and it didn't help really that his new product did not work that well :-)

You can't chemically separate the various isotopes of an element as they are identical.

The only way is to use the fact that an atom of U-238 is faintly heavier than an atom of U-235. It's the U-235 you want in a very concentrated form, as it's fissile

So the you need a physical, mechanical process. That involves turning your mixed Uranium into a gas, and then using a centrifuge to spin it at extreme speeds to cause the ever-so-slightly-heavier U-238 to move towards the edge.

As with a lot of things (e.g. moon shots), the science is A-level. The engineering is insane.

Be careful what you write. The US has a doctrine of "natural born secret". Which makes certain secrets illegal to know, even if you discover them independently.

Thank you I just thought I was 'going on' a bit

Interesting what motivations we attribute to Trump et al - I imagined he thought the ruined Fordow facility was just a big pile of dust now and needed a massive dust-pan and brush to sweep the uranium away and out of Iran

Of course he has many very clever expert advisors but what a frustrating 'student' to have to deal with!

Pleased you appreciated it - just felt I was being a bit ponderous and longwinded

I too only have Physics and Chemistry A levels and am a life science graduate but have been interested in the nuclear industry for years

I have a keyfob that still glows in the dark.

Apparently devices like these are used as tags for locating military equipment that has been airdropped. Also as guides to be able to sight a weapon in low light.

Elsewhere it's said Trump wears diapers. I have no opinion, except his derriere does look disproportionally large when he's photographed from behind playing golf and it's not covered by a jacket.

Big orange baby indeed.

I was amused that a story about a man trying to turn shit into gold was placed in eyeline of a story that featured Trump. I mean if you ran the numbers then Trump is going to figure in a lot of stories so his picture is likely to be adjacent o a lot of amusing juxtapositions or correlations.

There is also the deeper play of the idea that Trump is turning gold into shit with his destruction of US credibility abroad.

Yes, the reputational damage he's caused to the US is overshadowed by the oil crisis, but the fallout will persist for years to come. Trump's successors are going to have their work cut out on the international stage.

As long as the system which put him there remains intact, I can't see the rest of the world being too interested in fine words.

I think that was more Trump's line of thought rather than him literally telling people he believed the Uranium was literally now all in dust form.
