When did you start to get grey hair?

I’m mid 40’s now and I’m definitely getting more grey hairs, a few around my temples but they are gradually creeping to the rest of my hair. They stand out as I have naturally quite dark hair. I have been pulling them out as I see them but baldness is a potential if I keep doing that! 😂

So much variety! I’m trying to not to feel like I’m officially old at this point. I had my hair dyed blonde for years and didn’t notice but now I’ve gone back to my natural hair colour the grey hairs are waving at me between trips to the hairdressers! 👋👋👋.

30 and I have dark hair so it showed. But at 58 I still only have individual greys sprinkled through and mostly underneath so you don't really see them unless I put my hair up. I use a colour shampoo which blends them in a little without fully dying them.

I got my first one when I was mid-40s.

Don’t pull them out. They will just grow back exactly the same, and because they will be shorter than the rest of your hair, they will stick out and be a lot more obvious.

Im 48 and I have plucked out the odd one here or there (every couple of months) but now I have about 3 that are obvious because theyre grey and only about 2" long! (My hair is very dark brown and waist length)
The grey hairs seem more "wiry" and not as soft as my usual hair

Late 30s, I freaked out and started dying them more, I had highlights already but I sort of had 2 grey strips by my ears. I was traumatised!

I just highlight the hell out of my hair and always get them to do the grey sides!

18 and I used to touch it up with Harmony which came in a triangular box. I’ve coloured it properly first with highlights, then tint since my 20s

I would be all grey now if I didn't dye it. Thinking of embracing it as I can't imagine so much dying has been good for my hair.

Endofyear · 06/04/2026 22:40

I got the first few grey hairs in my 20s. Coloured my hair all through my 30s and 40s until I realised that I was getting grey roots every 2/3 weeks and couldn't be arsed colouring it any more! So I chopped it off to a chin length bob and grew out the coloured bit. Now at 55 it's white and shoulder length and I love it - so much easier than dyeing it and it suits my skin tone better!

29, I had cancer and I think it just aged every part of me, didn’t have any grey before that

cramptramp · 06/04/2026 22:44

In my 20’s.

IndieRocknRoll · 06/04/2026 22:45

21, genetic in my case. My mum was grey by her early 20s.

imp0ster · 06/04/2026 22:46

I think I was 30. Had darker hair then so decided on lightening up my hair to try and cover the grey.

damekindness · 06/04/2026 22:49

64 and no grey yet. My kids have greyer hair than I have. No idea why and I spend a great deal of time explaining that No, I don’t dye it and if I did why would I dye it this mousey brown?

A large streak of mine went grey overnight when I found my mother had unexpectedly died. That was aged 24. Thirty years later and I just have that and some near my temples, the rest is dark. The women in my family keep their dark hair into their eighties.

Mathsbabe · 06/04/2026 22:57

Me, late teens, my DD 9 or 10.

SnacksToTheMax · 06/04/2026 23:40

20ish. Fully silver by mid 30s - possibly earlier but I dyed it for years so don’t really know. I stopped at 34 because I was curious and have kept the silver ever since.

ExOptimist · 06/04/2026 23:42

Age 32. Dyed it for 25 years then grew it out during the pandemic, all moreorless white now.

thejadefish · 07/04/2026 01:27

Had a few by age 24, but didn't get noticeably more until my early 40's when I got a lot of grey within a couple of years (I'm maybe 1/4 grey now). DH is younger than me & has a lot more grey than me - his father died unexpectedly & our youngest was born within a few months of each other a few years ago and I think having these two very stressful / life changing events within 4 months accelerated the process for him. I've always been told that stress gives you grey hairs anyway - no idea if it's actually true.
