When did you start to get grey hair?

I’m mid 40’s now and I’m definitely getting more grey hairs, a few around my temples but they are gradually creeping to the rest of my hair. They stand out as I have naturally quite dark hair. I have been pulling them out as I see them but baldness is a potential if I keep doing that! 😂

Saw a few greys in my 30s. Gradual increase. At 49 I was in the hairdressers and thought 1. I look really drab 2. I finally have some spare money. Ergo I get it dyed twice a year. Tbh I’m starting to need to increase that frequency.

I got a white streak in my 40s. I’m 60 now and have lots of white on the top of my head, but it’s still a dark strawberry blonde underneath. The white looks like I’ve had it put in on purpose!

FrauPaige · 06/04/2026 13:08

Early 50s, still on the lookout.

ReignOfError · 06/04/2026 13:09

In my early 60s.

I was always very blonde, and the grey came in a very pretty silver, which was barely noticeable. At 65, I had my hair cut short to get rid of the last of the blonde. It’s still silver five years on, and I’m hoping there will not be a darker grey stage before it fades to white.

My hair has always been my one vanity.

Funnywonder · 06/04/2026 13:09

Around 19. I reckon it was probably half grey by my mid thirties. I grew it out at 53 and it was grey all over. A decent grey I could happily live with. It had been black originally and I was dyeing it lighter by the time I got to my mid forties. Then I just decided I couldn’t be arsed anymore. It’s great being all roots now🤣

TreesAtSea · 06/04/2026 13:11

16 and by the time I was 20 I had a lot of white hair at the front.

Tecklefancier · 06/04/2026 13:15

83 but still looking!

someoneseatenmyapple · 06/04/2026 13:18

Late 20s. Managed to pass it off for a while with highlights as was my hairline.

1000StrawberryLollies · 06/04/2026 13:19

I got a few late 40s. I'm now 54 and still don't have many. My hair is fine and light brown with a few highlights but even unhighlighted they are barely visible. My mum went grey quite late, but her hair was much darker than mine so the grey was more visible.

zingally · 06/04/2026 13:20

I noticed my first couple at about 38. I'm 41 now and am noticing more and more. My hair is naturally mid-blonde, so they don't show up massively, but I am developing a white streak in my fringe, which I actually quite like!
There's also a few around my temples.

But I feel smug amongst my 2 closest friends, who are both dark haired, and have a lot more obvious greys than me! Especially as I'm the oldest of the 3 of us.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/04/2026 16:31

I found the first few scattered around in lockdown. Mid-40s now and they've gained a few friends and are visible to sharp eyes around my parting. I'm still 99% my original colour and CBA to colour them at present. I might if they reach a stage of looking quite messy, but I don't like the thought of regularly colouring my hair and maintaining roots.

I'm glad it's becoming more acceptable for women to let them show naturally.

CMOTDibbler · 06/04/2026 16:41

19 - I coloured my hair regularly with demi permanent from 21 to 28 when my grey streak would only cover with permanent. Then decided to jack in the dye at 38 as it was too much upkeep. At 53 I am totally white haired

LightDrizzle · 06/04/2026 16:51

The first very few in my mid 40’s. If it increased it was very slowly but in the last two years it has really accelerated and I have lots at my temples and the front hairline and a streak on my parting. The rest is mouse as always (highlighted to blonde). I’m 55. I’m just getting to the point where it is noticeable about 4 weeks after my last highlights.

I think it’s going to take forever for the rest to go grey so for now I’m sticking with highlights and lowlights. Once I’m properly grey or white I’ll give that a whirl.

It would be interesting to know

no pressure wims

If late development of grey hair is related to
Original hair colour ( or is this scientifically a ridiculous question 🫤 )

My hair was black and greys started early 30s

No I think it is more genetic linked.

I am 59, with the very odd grey hair. Black hair.

My dad was ‘charcoal’ in his 80’s.

My paternal grandma (in her 70’s) looked as if she had a very poor dye job, very black - now I assume it was natural (as I look the same!)

Wow!

yes I see that now in my family The men anyway
Guessing women must have been reaching for the hair dye early on.

Contrarymary30 · 06/04/2026 17:08

40 ish . I'm 74 now but dye my hair as I refuse to go grey ., it's draining and ageing .

tabbycatslave · 06/04/2026 17:51

Noticed my first, near the front of my hairline at about 29/30. Plucked it. That one keeps growing back (straight up!) along with maybe 4 or 5 others max and I'm now nearly 37 so not too bad. Appreciate that plucking is Not Good, but my natural colour is very dark so they'd really stick out, and I don't want to dye it for the odd grey.

mindutopia · 06/04/2026 18:10

I’m 45 and no speck of grey. My mum is 76 and while I expect she does dye it now, she had her natural colour still in at least late 60s. I’ve even been through cancer treatment and my hair is lovely and thick. I do nothing special to it other than wash it once a week only with ordinary supermarket shampoo and conditioner.

Dh definitely was getting grey by 30, BIL in his 20s, but MIL was almost completely grey by her late teens.

UniquePinkSwan · 06/04/2026 18:11

I only have a couple at the top of my head but you have to really look for them. I’m 49

AgnesMcDoo · 06/04/2026 18:13

Im 52 and have a few grays starting

Frazzled89 · 06/04/2026 18:13

20! If you haven't had any grey hair until your 40s I'd say you were very lucky.

SwedishEdith · 06/04/2026 18:34

In my 20s. I used to just dye my hair anyway because it was fun to do so. Slightly regret I never watched the transition as my natural hair colour was a dark auburn. Stopped dyeing during Covid and it's mostly all white.

My eldest also started getting white hairs in her 20s so seems to be genetic for her. She's got very dark hair so noticeable to her.

GentleSheep · 06/04/2026 18:45

I started with the odd grey hair in my 50s but then that seemed to halt and even go away, so I have the odd grey now at 70 but no sign yet of it progressing.
