Can anybody decipher this? It's on the back of an old painting and we have no idea what it says.

What say you MN?

No idea. My MIL writes like that and I genuinely cannot read any birthday card from her

begonefoulclutter · 04/04/2026 14:56

There's a Genealogy board on MN and there's some posters on that who are good at decipering old handwriting - maybe ask on there?

What is the painting of?

Gingernaut · 04/04/2026 14:56

Miss or Mary
Josephine?
Emery
Dated 9th or 2nd September

ultracynic · 04/04/2026 14:57

Is it of two people? What sort of age is it?

MaybeItWasMe · 04/04/2026 14:57

I think the second word is Taylor. Can’t make out the first - could be Mary? I agree with Emery. Could be X Emery (as in maiden name).

DeQuin · 04/04/2026 14:59

Mrs Tayler or Taylor x Emery dated 2nd Sept

62.5% confidence 🤣

newN4me · 04/04/2026 14:59

I think the first word might be “My” with the swoop of the y going to the right instead of left

I think the first word might be “My” with the swoop of the y going to the right instead of left

I think it’s ‘my’ too

Airyfaerie · 04/04/2026 15:03

I stuck it into AI and it said

My Jaylen Ewing
Dall & Skip

I'm not convinced 😂 but I do think that first word may be 'My' (maybe 'my darling...')

newN4me · 04/04/2026 15:03

I think the last word on the first line might be “Grundy” and the end of the second might be “slip”

ObligateAerobe · 04/04/2026 15:05

I would say last word is 'slip' which could be referring to the frame.

GarlicFind · 04/04/2026 15:08

What's it a picture of?

I unhelpfully read this as:
Nup Jayler & Emm----y
Dah'd Girl Slip

Sorry 🤔

Mrs Taylor dated 9th Sep

NannyR · 04/04/2026 15:10

What is the context of the painting? Is it a portrait? Maybe the work of more than one person?
To me, it looks like three people have signed their names - M??? Taylor, J E??? and David? ?iel? Slip?

BreadstickBurglar · 04/04/2026 15:16

It’s obviously a picture of the bangled fortune teller Mrs Jangles and her pet ferret, Emery.

Overtheatlantic · 04/04/2026 15:18

Many thanks & everything, Daffy Gel Slip

cancerycaramelbear · 04/04/2026 15:21

Is it definitely in English?

Done2much · 04/04/2026 15:22

Mrs? Taylor Ewing.... D? Slip

Cosmication · 04/04/2026 15:22

I think the first bit is:
HiyA Jayden & Ewan.

I'm convinced it says Ewan. Ive no idea on the second line.

Sillyoclock · 04/04/2026 15:23

Could the second line have the words ‘Gold Slip’? This could refer to a narrow piece of gilded wood that sits between the frame and the canvas. Instructions to the picture framer, perhaps?

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 04/04/2026 15:28

Mrs Taylor (something - emery? Perhaps child in picture’s name if it’s a mother and child)
Second line - “Oak and gold slip,” it’s directions to the framer

Screamingabdabz · 04/04/2026 15:29

Mrs Taylor and family?

Mrs Taylor and everybody?
