Can anybody decipher this? It's on the back of an old painting and we have no idea what it says.

What say you MN?

Dated xx Sept

katepilar · 04/04/2026 17:28

It would help if you gave us a descent photo.

All I can read is the last word - slip.

Newusername0 · 04/04/2026 17:39

Chat GPT reckons it says

“Mary Parker Newman
Died Sept 5”

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/04/2026 17:40

First letter is fairly standard upper case M, next is Taylor (standard upper case T). I think it's a hastily written Miss - my mother tended to keep on going down when writing at speed, rather than stopping to change direction, so lots of Mi or Me words had what looked like My instead.

As it looks like a quickly scribbled at an angle on the desk framer's order note, I'm thinking the third word is when the picture was due to be collected - Evening - with the V pointing down to the framing choice

B0D · 04/04/2026 19:00

Oak and gilt slip

MeekSqueak · 04/04/2026 19:08

Chat GPT reckons Mary, view near Dalmally

MeekSqueak · 04/04/2026 19:11

In fact it says itis Mary Sander view near Dalmally Bridge Slip

clarrylove · 04/04/2026 19:15

I think the first line reads Philip Taylor.

Keepingongoing · 04/04/2026 19:25

It looks very like my grandmother’s handwriting, she was born in the 1890s. I think the first word is probably Mrs and could the first word on the second line be Dark?

So Mrs Tayler/(Taylor), Evening,Dark Gilt Slip

Makes sense as instructions to the picture framer,

ETA scribbled instructions! Not perfect handwriting

Allowingthebreezethroughmyhair · 04/04/2026 19:25

Mrs Taylor and Every. Dated 2nd Sept. Assume it's on the back of a photo?

mathanxiety · 04/04/2026 19:35

Second line Oak & something Slip?

Ineffable23 · 04/04/2026 19:42

I've fiddled with the contrast in case that helps anyone.

My darling Emily
oak & gilt slip
I love old handwriting

Will you be any the wiser if you are satisfied whether it is Mrs Taylor? I’ve just remembered, I have a very old photograph, early 20th century, found in my grandmother’s house when clearing it. It is of a little boy in a beret and smock, paddling in the sea. On the back is pencilled “Barrie White aged 3”. I have absolutely no idea who this is or whether they have any connection with my family. For all I know my grandmother found the photograph there when she moved in and did not quite like to throw little Barrie away.

rosycheex · 04/04/2026 21:29

I wondered if it was the name of the subjects - MP Taylor and Emissary

fouroclockrock · 04/04/2026 22:26

My Jaylen and Euan. Dak and Gd Slip. Not a clue but that’s all I see 😆

Actually - really not sure about 9th as it could be a ‘rd’ instead of a ‘th’ so then 9 doesn’t work

pandora206 · 04/04/2026 22:47

I think it's a framer's note too:

Philip Taylor F Evening (Friday?)
Oak & Gilt Slip

Tryagain26 · 04/04/2026 22:50

Mary or Mya Taylor
Then it looks like X Emery or every
Oak, gold ?

kohlrabislaw · 04/04/2026 22:56

I also think it says oak and gilt slip. Makes sense

ExOptimist · 04/04/2026 23:24

The first word is Miss. When 2 letter 's' were joined it was very common to make the first one a long shape as in your photo. So Miss Taylor & E.....y.

Agree with Oak & gold slip.
