Can anybody decipher this? It's on the back of an old painting and we have no idea what it says.

What say you MN?

Mrs Taylor and Emma. Dated 9th September

PinkHairbrushClub · 04/04/2026 15:33

I'm no use because that bottom line looks like 'daahl and leek soup' to me!

Hallywally · 04/04/2026 15:33

Could it be a style of shorthand- Pitman maybe?

catipuss · 04/04/2026 15:34

Think I agree with Mrs (or first name) Taylor and '&' then child's name (maybe emma) and the directions to the framer seems right. Mother and baby picture?

gottakeeponmoving · 04/04/2026 15:36

Mrs Taylor
Evening
Dark Red Slip

Do you have any more context?

ScribblingPixie · 04/04/2026 15:37

I'm seeing Miss Tayler Emery dated 3rd Sept

Beachtastic · 04/04/2026 15:38

Whoever wrote it certainly wished everyone to remain anonymous 😖😁

Renamed · 04/04/2026 15:38

Or maybe Mrs Taylor of. Somewhere beginning with E,ending in g or y

Ignoramus12 · 04/04/2026 15:38

Mrs or Mya Taylor

dottycat123 · 04/04/2026 15:41

My Darling for the first two words and the last is slip I think.

Nopayrise · 04/04/2026 15:41

Gilt not gold I think

NannyR · 04/04/2026 15:45

I think the last line is framing instructions - oak and g* slip. Gilt might fit but they haven't dotted the i and crossed the t.

Ochtawa · 04/04/2026 15:49

Screamingabdabz · 04/04/2026 15:29

Mrs Taylor and family?

fussychica · 04/04/2026 16:00

Mrs/Mary or Hugo Tayler / Taylor Emery
Oak,(heart shape) gilt slip. Instructions to framer?

Htcunya · 04/04/2026 16:01

nonevernotever · 04/04/2026 15:55

Mrs Taylor
X Framing ?
Oak and gilt slip

I think this is right, certainly for the first and third lines. Oak and gilt slip for the framing instructions.

ShiftySquirrel · 04/04/2026 16:04

Mrs Taylor & Emily
Dated 9 Sep?

SilverDarling2563 · 04/04/2026 16:05

I’m going to be a bit controversial here but I think the first word may be Insp short for Inspector. Could it be a picture of a police officer?

AgentPidge · 04/04/2026 16:06

The last word is Slip - it has the dot over the i

YourVagesty · 04/04/2026 16:07

Sorry everyone - I've got family round so I've only just seen the request for more context. It's a print of this 'Companions in Misfortune' by Briton Riviera.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, I'm still going through them ☺️

I would say the bottom part reads 'dat'd 9th Sep'.

diddl · 04/04/2026 16:08

I think oak & gilt slip for the last line.

The word between the two lines looks like evening to me!

Incandescentangel · 04/04/2026 16:09

The end looks like something and Gail Slip.
